Greetings, Hawkeyes.
This is a game that is really impossible to predict.
Iowa is struggling, but you get CJF back tonight and will be at home, plus it seems like the recent losses have really motivated everybody out there.
Rutgers has won four straight, but we always seem to struggle containing your offense (I mean, who doesn't?), and Ron Harper Jr. has been in a terrible shooting slump. Since starting the season 25-50 from 3-pt range, Harper has gone 8-44 (you read that right). Part of the issue was that he sprained an ankle and had to sit out a game, and he just hasn't been the same since coming back. I don't think it's even the injury anymore. He has just lost confidence and lost his rhythm.
But, as you all well know, Harper seems to shoot the lights out at your place, so maybe tonight is the night he gets it going again. Regardless, we've been winning with Harper only getting about 10 ppg, but he does lots of other things like rebound, play defense, and find the open man.
That said, Rutgers' 4-game winning streak has been fueled by really good defense, rebounding, and timely offense. And a lineup change in which Jacob Young and Montez Mathis now come off the bench, and Paul Mulcahy and Caleb McConnell start. The change has made our defense more connected (even though Young and Mathis are actually our two best "on ball" perimeter defenders), but more importantly, has made our offense more fluid in the half court. There's been a lot less one-on-one stuff and more ball movement and looking for Myles Johnson in the post, and less turnovers (Young and Mathis can be can out of control at times).
A word on Myles. He's not going to wow anyone with post moves on offense, but he has an incredible knack for keeping rebounds alive and getting open for dunks and layups. But his real value is in rebounding and defense. I think I read that he is ranked first in the B1G in block rate, steal rate, and rebounding rate, so he should be in the conversation for defensive POY. It should be an interesting matchup against Garza if Myles stays out of foul trouble.
I can't see RU pulling off the upset at your place, so my prediction is Iowa 79, Rutgers 72.
