Rutgers predictions

Hawks are backed into a corner - come out fighting and high intensity. I don't think they lose this one......It's the next couple I'm worried about......

Hawks 81
RU 73

I hope so. I mean, they came out about as fierce as possible against IU, but IU weathered the storms at the beginnings of halves and won the game at the point where Iowa is weakest: the last four minutes of the game.

They seem to be incapable of putting 40 minutes together with severe offensive or defensive lapses.

Connor goes 0-7 from the Field
Jobo gives up a minimum of 6 3s
Our defense is trash.
Luka gets fouled 43 times and they call 6 of them
We get outrebounded
We shoot 56% from the FT line

Fran pisses another lead away with bad rotations and lack of timeouts. He yells a lot and looks really dumb.

Hawks lose 86-82

Same as most Februarys around here.

I thought the Hawks came out Sunday playing like they were backed in a corner. They just couldn't keep it up.

I think (hope) we come out pissed off and focused.

I hope (but doubt) we do that for the full 40.

I think we pull off the win, but are still frustrated by the lapses in focus by this team.

I get the sentiment, but a win is a win at this point. Their lapses, poor D and lack of focus at times is not a surprise. I'm well past expecting that there will be learning from mistakes and different strategies employed.

This is very detailed and I must say "I can see every one of these things happening". Good summary!

I don’t see it..

Rutgers 83
Iowa 78

Iowa blows a 10 pt lead with 10 to go..
We've lost our last 3 games by 5 pts. or less, so I'd have to agree with you here. Based on our recent inability to maintain leads late, from a defensive standpoint, and due to late game coaching decisions, I'd say we'd be very fortunate to hopefully be the last one standing, paraphrasing coach McCaffery.

We’re the home team fellas, going to be some home cooking going on. Chances we get Little Larry or Boroski? 90%

Ever since Bardo did his podcast where he complained that RU, and Myles Johnson in particular, were getting screwed by the Big Ten referees we have been getting a better whistle. Funny how those things work.

This will be an interesting game and could go either way. I don’t think that you can count on the home cooking however, even with Borowski. I think his inevitable horrible calls will cut both ways now.

Without Frederick, and anticipating that your coach will not play Toussaint as much as he should against RU, I give RU a 40% chance to pull off the upset.

First Rutgers possession, Ron Harper Junior drills a uncontested 22 ft shot from behind the arc and he is
off to the races. If Rutgers is making their 3's, Iowa unlikely to win. I would say the game is a 50/50 situation.

I'm predicting I'm not going to watch the game and find something else to do. I'm going to periodically check the score on my phone and check to see who's playing all the minutes. I'm not sure if this will make me happier but I can't be heartbroken from watching the same thing happen every game. Either way I'll definitely be on the basketball forum after the game.

Honestly I don’t know what to expect. It wouldn’t surprise me if Iowa won by 20 or lost by 20. That’s where I am on this season, just can’t tell game to game who will show up anymore .

I thought we were very fortunate at Rugers to get out of there with a “W”. And that’s when we were playing well. Harper is overdue for a breakout game. And we wil allow someone who averages 6 points go off for 18. Rutgers wins 82-73.

if it means we can ditch Fran, I’m ok with it. Does anybody really think this team can win more than 1-2 games against tourney competition? If so, state your case citing our best wins of 2020/21 please.
If Fredrick is healthy, hawks go to sweet 16.

This game isn't about offense. If they still believe that they are a F4 team then they need to show that they can nut up and get tough...not confident.

Fran's teams have always been mentally weak and I just don't get it. Game will be won with rebounding, help defense and free throws. JW needs to hit his, no reason to be less than 85% unless there is lack of focus.

Greetings, Hawkeyes.

This is a game that is really impossible to predict.

Iowa is struggling, but you get CJF back tonight and will be at home, plus it seems like the recent losses have really motivated everybody out there.

Rutgers has won four straight, but we always seem to struggle containing your offense (I mean, who doesn't?), and Ron Harper Jr. has been in a terrible shooting slump. Since starting the season 25-50 from 3-pt range, Harper has gone 8-44 (you read that right). Part of the issue was that he sprained an ankle and had to sit out a game, and he just hasn't been the same since coming back. I don't think it's even the injury anymore. He has just lost confidence and lost his rhythm.

But, as you all well know, Harper seems to shoot the lights out at your place, so maybe tonight is the night he gets it going again. Regardless, we've been winning with Harper only getting about 10 ppg, but he does lots of other things like rebound, play defense, and find the open man.

That said, Rutgers' 4-game winning streak has been fueled by really good defense, rebounding, and timely offense. And a lineup change in which Jacob Young and Montez Mathis now come off the bench, and Paul Mulcahy and Caleb McConnell start. The change has made our defense more connected (even though Young and Mathis are actually our two best "on ball" perimeter defenders), but more importantly, has made our offense more fluid in the half court. There's been a lot less one-on-one stuff and more ball movement and looking for Myles Johnson in the post, and less turnovers (Young and Mathis can be can out of control at times).

A word on Myles. He's not going to wow anyone with post moves on offense, but he has an incredible knack for keeping rebounds alive and getting open for dunks and layups. But his real value is in rebounding and defense. I think I read that he is ranked first in the B1G in block rate, steal rate, and rebounding rate, so he should be in the conversation for defensive POY. It should be an interesting matchup against Garza if Myles stays out of foul trouble.

I can't see RU pulling off the upset at your place, so my prediction is Iowa 79, Rutgers 72.

I would be remiss if I didn't make mention of Geo Baker. He's only averaging 10 ppg, but he suffered a badly sprained ankle on opening night, missed several games, and then wasn't the same even when he came back. So that limited his effectiveness.

But the old Geo seems to be back the past several games. He is one of the most clutch players you will ever see. He might not pile up 25 ppg (well, he does occasionally), but in the words of Billy Raftery, the kid has ONIONS in crunch time. In our most recent win against Minnesota, he scored 8 of his 16 points in the last four minutes, including three huge buckets (including his patented step back jumper).

Since the lineup change, our primary PG has been Baker instead of Young, and this has really settled down our offense and facilitated better ball movement. Young can be electric in the open floor and one-on-one, but he struggles more and can be out of control and can be a turnover machine.

Can't wait to see your opinions on what should change after you don't watch the game.

It'll probably be difficult since Fran is so willing to adapt from game to game. His coaching style has changed so much in the 10 years he's been at Iowa.

Okay I’m ready to move on. What will we see Wednesday?

I think the hawks come out mad and win comfortably, RU gets it under 10 with 4 minutes left but we make enough stops to put it away.

RU 68
Iowa 84
Hawks win and Garza gets fouled like 15 times but only shoots 8 or 10 free throws. lol.

I just asked Bardo during his Facebook/YouTube livestream for a prediction, and he went back and forth on it. When he found out the game is at Iowa, he went with Iowa. He's still live at the moment.

UPDATE: Bardo just said Knicks have a "plethora" of guards. I took a drink.

UPDATE 2: Someone else just asked "what happened to Iowa?" Bardo responded:
* Iowa plays in the deepest conference,
* Iowa is an average defensive team,
* There's enough film at this point in the season to game plan against Iowa and make it difficult for them,
* Iowa struggled getting stops late in the game in close losses to Illinois and Indiana,
* Iowa has never been great defensively under Fran,
* Iowa is just having a tough time defensively, and
* Iowa is going to have to get better defensively to have a deep NCAA tourney run.
