Rutgers up next

Wow over 50% is insane. Does he not take too many 3's?

Rutgers fans can only dream of someday having a legit lethal 3 point shooter *sigh* We would lose our minds if we had someone at 40%

Averages 1.9 made threes per game and is 29/57 on the year in 15 games.

Does Garza get in foul trouble often? Does he play good defense? (I have no idea, these are legitimate questions) We have an excellent center but very little depth behind him. Concerned about the matchup, too, as he's a traditional back to the basket guy.

He usually doesn't get in foul trouble. It's amazing.

He only averages 2.8 fouls per 40 minutes. His defense has taken a big jump this year but hes not one of the best defending big men in the league.

It's more important for him to stay out of foul trouble anyway even if he gives up an easy bucket here and there.

The frustrating thing with Myles is he gets a lot of moving screen and reach in type fouls outside the 3 point line. If he is going to foul save them for battling bigs under the basket or protecting the rim from a guard driving. He is working on it though and I think been better in the screen issue at least as of late

Geezus, that is almost -- almost -- more impressive than Fredrick's 50%+ 3-pt shooting. Most big men don't have the skill to avoid fouls at that kind of rate.

Do you guys think that Garza will leave early for the NBA? He'd be crazy not to, with the year he's having.

No.

As you will see tonight, Garza is a super effective big guy but his game doesn't translate to the NBA that well.

If him and Wieskamp come back, Iowa will be loaded next season only losing our 6th man (Kriener) and a grad transfer (Evelyn) that is playing about 16 MPG.

Garza’s own father says he’s usually the most unathletic player on the floor and that he’s coming back for his senior year.

Sounds like Iowa will be a top 4 type team battling for the B1G title next year. I was wondering about Garza and the NBA. I know hes not a crazy athlete but if he can hit the 3 the NBA definitely wants that from their bigs. Myles is strictly in the paint only player

Garza shoots the 3 well for a big man (38% this year) but rarely is he more than a few inches behind the college 3 point line.

It would be a stretch to say he has NBA 3 point range at this point in his career.

With the college line moved back it's not that big of a difference really. He will have a nice euro career if not the NBA

That’s the general consensus. Garza could have a very nice Euro career, but his athletic limitations will curtail his NBA opportunities.

RU is 1-3 on the road this year with the only win at Nebraska.

They have lost road games to MSU, Illinois and Pittsburgh. Its really really tough to win on the road in conference this year.
Yea but admit it. You really enjoyed our 1 win on the road now didn't you.

This is an excellent point. It is absolutely more difficult to rebound from zone than man. And Rutgers is one of the best rebounding teams in the B1G.

Really looking forward to the conference’s best offense going up against its best defense. Strength versus strength.

Fun game ... :)

Oh well, good game. You guys made the plays when it counted, we couldn't once again on the road. Maybe see you in the tourney.

Interestingly, Rutgers has done a superb job against zone of getting shots in the paint. A 2-3 zone makes it pretty easy to get the ball into the high post around the foul line, and we've been using 6-6 playmaker Paul Mulcahy in that spot, and he has such good vision and passing ability that he's able to find guys for shots from that perch, or, if the bigs down low aren't open, he has a knack for driving down the lane to get his own shot.

Still, I find it curious that more teams haven't tried playing zone against us, as we're only shooting around 29-30% from deep, whereas our 2-pt FG percentage is over 50% (one of the best in the conference).

With your injury issues and 8-man rotation, I suspect Fran will try some zone, and we'll see whether that high-post game is working for us.

Mulcahy is a reserve, but he will almost certainly see heavier minutes if we see a 2-3 zone. The few times teams threw that defense out there, we carved it up for a few plays with Mulcahy at the foul line and they've bailed out of it quickly.

Adjusted per 40 min, Baker has 5.3 assists to 2.5 tov, while Mulcahy has 5.2 assists to 2.0 tov. But while he's an efficient scorer (.635 eFG%), he generally doesn't look for his shot (just 5.6 FGA per 40 min).

I would make Rutgers beat me from 3 and pack in the paint. If we have a hot night so be it.

Agreed. Teams haven't played much zone which is odd since we aren't good from 3. We are very good at attacking the offensive glass and it's hard to defensive rebound out of a zone so that might have something to do with it.

Paul has done phenomenal against the 2-3 zone at the foul line. He finds the right pass. Takes it in occasionally. Looks to dump it down low. Iowa doesn't have great athletes he would struggle with so I expect a good game from him here.

No one on the team has amazing stats. It's spread around. He's also a true freshman off the bench. You clearly haven't seen him play. His court vision and passing are elite. This reminds me of the Minnesota board not thinking Young would be the quickest fastest player on the court and laughing at me for saying so. He clearly was. You'll see Paul's game. He is a true pass first play maker

Playmaker Paul had 2 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls tonight.

Yeah, he didn't have a great night. He struggled with your physicality and the road environment. Still, he's a true freshman, and will probably again be a reserve next year as we're not losing any guards to graduation.

You guys did a great job of denying the top of the key entry passes against the zone, and made the lane a meat grinder for penetrating players. Honestly not sure how we scored 80 - just Harper having a big night when our guards were mostly struggling.

Hope to see you again in March. Good luck the rest of the way!

Unless I missed it a bunch, I hardly saw him at the free throw line against our zone. Was he there much when he was in?

He tried early, but you were running something of a 1-3-1 at that point where there was a defender taking up that position. At other times your guys did a great job of shutting that passing lane off and pushing him away from that spot.

Much later in the game Johnson got the ball at that high post spot a handful of times, but he's not the best distributor - and is usually the one who benefits in the lower post from a guard getting the ball there.

Really good scouting and game plan overall defensively which largely kept our guys out of the paint where we score most of our points, and really frustrated all of our guards (Mulcahy wasn't alone in having a rough game).

Our guards were totally stymied. The five guys in our guard rotation went 7-26 (.269) for just 20 points.... where their conference averages (including this game) are 13.4-35.0 (.383) and 35.5 points. It was a similar poor road outing to our loss at Pitt, where those five went 9-31 (.290) for just 23 points. If it weren't for Harper having a career night, the game would have spiraled out of control.

Garza is averaging as many points as 2 players and stays out of foul trouble.
He is more than a back to the basket guy. Can play inside or outside and runs the floor well.

Harper obviously has a ton of confidence against Iowa, his prior career high was last year in Carver.

Great game that could have gone either way. Iowa really had just one bad stretch in the second half, when the reserves gave up some bad TOs and couldn't score. We then had trouble getting the ball to Luka for most of the end. Iowa did an exceptional job minimizing offensive rebounds, which was my biggest concern. In the end, if Young doesn't miss his point blank shot on a nice drive in the last minute or so, RU would have been right there. Fortunately, Connor, JoeW, and CJF, who usually will have the ball at the end of a game, all make their FTs.

Good luck to RU going forward. Class coach and an impressive, hard-working team.
