This is hardly a game to be outraged about. A mediocre Iowa team that plays no defense gets blown out on the home court of the best team in the league. After that team suffered a major upset loss. Not a surprise at all.

I guess it depends what you mean by futility. They have finished in the top tier of the Big Ten a few times under Fran and have been close to winning the regular season conference title. So, if by futility, you mean they haven’t won the conference, then okay.

You have a point about the lack of toughness and defense, and are probably right about the athletic side of things because the makeup of the squad looks largely like the sales crew at Abercrombie and Fitch or the Pottery Barn. 😝

BUT, in my 40 years on this planet I don't know that I can recall a time where we went into Mackey and played well. It just doesn't seem to happen. Yes, leaning into some of the younger guys earlier would have likely pushed the ceiling higher (speculation), and I for years I complained that Fran was far too enamored with recruiting the long lean omni-position player, but what we normally lacked was the strong, quick, athletic guards that could play defense, create and get to the bucket. There are a few exceptions to this of course.

As for CMac, he was a wonderful glue guy who did vastly improve his 3 point shooting by the end. He was an excellent high level role player, but the fact that we had to lean on him as much as we did speaks to the lack of talent depth, nepotism or both.

The last few years but I was at Iowa during the Miller and Olsen years and got spoiled. Anything less then those teams is poor. At the same time Iowa football was worse then horrible so the teams since then with a plus 500 record is tolerable.

Football, I grew up with Hayden, and KF more or less sustained that level of success. So I've mostly been pretty satisfied with the football program over the decades.

Hoops, I vaguely remember the Raveling years, but the 1986-87 Elite 8 team was the year that made me a hard core Iowa hoops fan, and the BJ/Roy/Ed era in general. Do I expect Iowa basketball to always be at that level? Of course not. But, it's just been soooooooo LONG since this program has accomplished anything of note, that my level of enthusiasm for men's hoops has slowly dwindled to where it is now: nearly total apathy. Simply making the NCAA Tournament and getting bounced in the first or second round just doesn't move the needle for me anymore. I need something like a regular season conference title and/or a Sweet 16 (or better) run to stoke the fires again.

It's not just a Fran thing with me. It's also Lickliter. And Alford. And, to a certain extent, Davis. I love Dr. Tom, but other than the Sweet 16 his last year, he didn't accomplish anything with this own recruits that Fran isn't doing. As a kid, I got reeled in by what Davis accomplished with Lute and Raveling's recruits, but then it tapered off and the program has never gotten back to that level. I wonder if it ever will.

Most of these players listed were awarded scholarships at some point and most of them had no business playing D1 basketball.

This while having 1 or 2 NBA type players on the team. He is a good offensive coach and a horrible defensive coach. He's also embarrassing on the court at times.

Any average AD would have fired him. But we had Barta.
