Sandfort…

I think he will be a starter next year. He appears to be a solid rebounder also for a SG/SF.
Only problem is he plays the same position as Patrick.

I expect him to be first sub in next year.

If he gets stronger he could probably play some 4 too.

Really, whoever comes off the bench depends on who they are replacing. Doh!

So far Sandfort has come in for JoBo when another guard comes in. Love that.

Kris comes in for Keegan or Rebraca. Great!

I would love to alway see 3 of Kris, Keegan, PMac or Rebraca always on the floor.

I want 2 of JoBo, Joe, Ahron or Tony on the floor.

Then I would like to see Standfort and CMac come in to give guys rest and provide a spark either on offense (Sandfort) or defense (CMac).

I think this rotation would work very well for Iowa.

I think you're right on both. Assuming Kris doesn't get a good NBA opportunity this year. Filip, Kris and Patrick are the known front court starters. Who else is likely to get into that position? Decent depth at guard, although no known returning shooters. Front court gets real thin. Payton might play 2-4 next season if no other good shooter emerges at guard.

For all his talent as a shooter, he’s equally good at passing and plays extremely smart. Solid defender and rebounder. He will be All Big before he is done. Another under recruited Fran gem.

Wasn't Sandfort the 2nd rated player in Iowa behind Devries? Iowa B-ball coaches have historically taken the 1st or 2nd or both type players out of Iowa. I don't see recruiting Sandfort as anything special to Fran. Alford took guys like Alex Thompson, Carlton Reed, Mike Henderson, Horner, Brunner, Haluska,

Licklter had Gatens and May and McCabe.

Fran started out his 1st class with Josh Ogelsby, then Uthoff transferred in, Jok, JBo, Weezy...Iowa players are always going to be the core to Iowa B-ball teams as are son's of ex Iowa players.

I like Sandfort's game...I was okay with recruiting him before even seeing him play because he was a top guy out of Iowa and labeled a pure shooter and his HS 3pt percentage was great. After seeing his game, I think he is above average athlete and he has abillity to use his left hand, which neither Gatens, Haluska, or Weezy ever had. Sandfort is 90% FT shooter, the elite 3pt shooters are usually elite FT shooters and it speaks to their work ethic, concentration, and mental toughness. Sandfort is also a tougher defender than I expected. Sandfort has a lot of upside...we shall see if it plays out.

After seeing Kyle Korver have a long NBA career one wonders where Iowa would have been with him. Sandfort is cut along the same cloth. I would say Sandfort is better NBA prospect than PMAC.

I’m disappointed, Hawk fans are so conditioned for mediocrity they are praising the potential of a bench player off a .500 B10 team in Frans 10th(?) year.

This kid going to be a “nightmare”? A “decent” defender? Really? How is he going to guard a Jaden Ivey or Alfonso Plummer? Come on man.

Sandfort I’m sure is a great kid, team mate, student, etc. He just isn’t the kind of player this program needs to win a B10 title or make a Sweet 16.

Like I said, pump the damn brakes.
Haven't you heard
The bench players are always better than the starters and the second string QB is better than the starter

If you really don't think Sandfort could be a piece for a B1G championship or sweet 16 team, you don't know anything about basketball.

You do realize that Connor and Sandfort played together about 90% - 95% of the time today, right?

Also, I’m sure you know that Kris and Toussaint were the 1st and 2nd players off the bench in both halves.
Connor 2nd most minutes off the bench. In within a min of the other 2. 6th most today. Sandfort playing more and others like ulis suffers and relegated to 10th man in the rotation instead today. It’s not difficult to see after 3/4 way through the season that Connor doesn’t deserves minutes he’s getting which would be better served going more to sandfort, ulis, or kris off the bench instead and give him spot duty minutes. But I forgot he adds so much to the team…

Ulis, Perkins, Cmac and Joe T. are not good offensively. Put two of these guys together + Rebraca and you are playing 2.25 on 5 offensively. Sandfort had 10 points in the first half yesterday in something like 6-minutes? The kid always seems to be around the ball and gets after it on the glass. Yes quicker guards will pose a problem, but they do for Jbo and Cmac too.

I would rather see Sandfort taking shots than any of the 4 above.. This may change as teams become more aware of him, but he is capitalizing on the attention defenses are giving to Jbo and Keegan.

As I have said over the last several game threads, I love this kid. How can you not? Great size, quick release, high basketball IQ, plays good defense and REBOUNDS.

Payton is a good player now. And he's only a freshman. And he's only going to get better.

Lets hope he continues playing like this as the Hawks look to finish out the season strong and get a 7 seed or better in the NCAA Tournament.

Nice to see him lead the team with 8 rebounds, in 17 minutes.

He was also the team's 2nd leading scorer (tied with Kris at 12 points)

His stat line:

17 minutes

2-4 (50%) from three
3-4 (75%) from 2 point range
...................
5-8 (63%) Overall Shooting

0-0 FTs

12 Points
8 Rebounds (2 OFFENSIVE)
1 Assist

1 Turnover
4 Fouls

Sandfort wasn’t a top 100 player nationally and I project him to be an All Big performer before he is done. I see that as a diamond in the rough recruit. We will see if he turns out to be as impactful as Aaron White, I think he has that potential. Fran offered him over Devries, who a lot of people were really high on, btw. Not that Devries was ever going anywhere but Drake.

Also, for the “Sandfort is not a 2 guard” crowd I could have sworn I saw him playing some 2 on Sunday. Not that there is any difference between a 2 and 3 in Frans system. If Sandfort, Patrick and Kris all aren’t starting together next year it will be a crime.

I've liked PS since I saw him at this level. Was concerned he didn't have the overall athleticism to compete at a high level but after watching him play I am wrong. While he will always be a little limited with pure athleticism, he makes up for it with BB IQ and knowing where and how to be in position. He also has a much quicker release than I knew so that will help him as he grows.

One of @webcentrick 's many nice photos from yesterday.

High release, indeed.

And one of his 4 fouls was complete garbage. Under our basket grabs for the ball and defender grabs it and pivots. Payton didn't grab or hit his arm at all, except what was initiated by the opponent. I think he is getting the newcomer welcome to the big time foul calls. Kind of like what Keegan got last year.

Uh, every team needs shooters. You sound dumb.

You can't have the facts screw with his agenda. Gotta get that Connor smack down in every thread or it's not official

Again please explain why he should keep getting the minutes he does off the bench? Minutes guys like kris has definitely earned and others like sandfort should’ve been getting all along which was my point but suffer so Fran can play his son. last few games has shown he has deserved more along with the 2 non starting guards and how this team didn’t skip a beat but looked better with out him playing but 4 min 2 games prior. Or how he shouldn’t be relegated to 10th man in the rotation. Because if he had any other last name we all now he would barely see the floor minus spot minutes.

point is sandfort should’ve seen the floor more this year come big 10 play but let’s bury our head in the sand and don’t think if it wasn’t for a certain player he wouldn’t have played more and in correlation would’ve been better for the team minus one good half at psu. Amazing all of a sudden gets more min in conference play after some other bench player gets hurt misses a game and plays 4 the next. But game after let’s push ulis to 10th man in the rotation instead and give the guy who excels at nothing 2nd most min off the bench again.

Kris also played 85% of the time with Connor yesterday. So if Sandfort and Kris’ minutes are being stolen, it’s clearly not Connor stealing them since they’re playing their minutes together.

I’ll ask you, why are you singling out Connor? It was obvious that several players played a lot worse than he did yesterday.

As you pointed out, Connor was 6th in minutes. He was also 6th in Rebs. Tied for 2nd in ORebs. Tied for 3rd in Assist (3:1 a/t) and 4th in +\-. Connor didn’t put up Keegan numbers, but certainly didn’t do anything to hurt the team either.

I don't hate Connor. As long as he is shooting when left wide open and makes 1 out 4 he's ok on the court. He does some other stuff that is helpful like making good passes ect.

But , this team really doesn't need him for anything specific.

His minutes could all be swallowed up by the other bench players and probably be better off for it.

You're happy with 25% on wide open shots? Pretty low bar don't you think?

I'm assuming the only answer you will accept is "Fran is his Dad". It's wrong, but that doesn't matter because Connor will continue to get the minutes he gets regardless. We're winning games, quit singling him out with hypotheticals to just complain about him.

Why? First not just asking about yesterday. Because anyone who has watched this team can see he is the worst of the bunch out of the 5 main guys on the bench. Everyone has a weakness but least others have trenches they add to the team. An Example If he plays 9 tonight instead of 19 that’s 10 more min other guys who produces more on the court can play. With topic of sandfort he’s a guy who could’ve benefited from some of the minutes connor has played it he was our 10th man instead of him and flip flop Pt. Connor is a shell of the player he was 2-3 years ago. Ex watch highlights of few years ago would try post up take his guy in lane draw fouls. He has 1 2 pt basket on the whole season which is kind of astonishing in over 300min on the floor and 4 of his 10 makes all year in one half vs psu. He’s literally an empty jersey on that end with teams sagging off daring to shoot with zero threat to score.

No more Garza to pad asst and lob it in. ulis and others just as effective if not more with assist. Same with the other guys rebounding about on par for smaller guys. As for D he’s nothing special can’t stay in front of quicker guards. Again for all the connor apologist what does he bring to this team that warrants time he gets? All I ever hear are the cliche “toughness” “experienced” non sense which equals hes not that great at anything. I’m fine again if Fran wants to play few spot min a half but time he gets especially late in the games is a joke. Again it’s not tough to see nepotism is a factor and in the end it boils down its not beneficial to the team.

He seems to have a big wingspan for his height, too. He rebounds much better than I thought he would.

Edit: it was 6'8" as a hs senior.

Really hoping his brother comes to Iowa, too.

Hmmm. Connor is 3rd in Assists per 40 behind Joe and Ulis. He has far less TOs per 40 than either of them. Connor is 6th in Rebs per 40, just slightly ahead of Sandfort. I guess Sandfort’s rebounding “is on par with the smaller guys” too.

What does he bring to the team? What is his major asset to the team? Minus jbo he should be up there behind those 2 for asst being he doesn’t score or barely shoots it. As for rebounding he’s 6th for a team up until 3 games ago had a 9 man rotation for the most part.

again give me the connor 2-3 years ago have no issues with his minutes this year. But with injuries and makeup of this team very different from past 2 years where he isn’t surrounded by shooters and luka and not a very good fit. To me it’s like giving a guy who use to be a good hitter a season or 2 ago a good spot in the batting order even though he’s a shell of himself and slumping big time.

What does he do to hurt the team? His defense has been solid even though you claim he can’t stay in front of quicker guards. Mainly it’s not true, because he hasn’t been guarding quicker guards.

Obviously Connor doesn’t shoot very well, but in turn he doesn’t take a lot of shots either. He has the lowest FG attempts per 40 on the team. Connor doesn’t hunt shots, instead he looks to set up his teammates with a better shot. Horrible, I know. His A/TO ratio also leads the team, even without Garza who was the only reason Connor got assists apparently.

Connor was the one directing traffic yesterday when Iowa was in the zone. Connor was also coaching another player yesterday when that player came out completely flat after halftime.

Did you even read the post you replied to?

The people complaining about Connor have been making the same complaints for 5 years. Complaining about Connor getting time in a blow-out seems too much. I think there's some OCD at work. I also agree with most of the critics this year and would like to see less Connor and more Payton and Kris but the need to attack Connor daily is just stubborn silliness. With only ten or so games to we could give a rest.

There are a lot of ways to be a very good college basketball. Lots of teams make the Sweet 16 without a future NBA player on the roster or in the recent history. Payton's kind of a stocky kid that's converting baby fat to college muscle, so I think he will be plenty strong to hold position against the 6'7"-6'9" players and of course much more easily with guards. He's showing great shot form and a pretty good eye for the basket. Scoring in different ways than just face up shots. Good eye for the court as well.

More ready to play than I thought he would be.
