School food vendor apologizes — again — for 'inexcusable' Black History Month menu

Chicken & Waffles with watermelon as part of Black History month menu? It was done with intent to be racist or it was just a racist joke. No way was this an accident. Either way, not a good look.

That being said, chicken send waffles are great and watermelon is one of my favorite fruits. As a human being, I would offended by this black history month menu item…….but I would still probably eat it.

Chilis in Cedar Rapids served it….
"Served it"? Hell, we've got an entire restaurant dedicated to it a few blocks from my house.

There's no evidence that it was done with any intent and I don't believe there was any special black history month menu -- just stuff being served in February.

One of my points was that fried (or breaded) chicken and watermelon co-occurring on a menu in a school is going to happen a buttload of times across the US every year. They're just common food stuff for school lunches.

This just so happened to be at the beginning of February.

It may be that some prankster -- or worse white hooded fellow working for the vendor -- dreamed this up, but simple probability say it's just going to happen sometimes, especially when you give yourself an entire month.

Leaving intent aside, you really think serving fried chicken and watermelon on the first day of Black History Month was just a coincidence?

You really think that chicken, waffles and watermelon are common on school menus? Come on.

Not arguing the deliciousness. I lived in Texas for 6 years. Didn't know it was on the Chili's menu. I can't remember the last time I was at Chili's.
It was probably 4-5 years ago. It stands out because I thought it was an odd combo and I had never come across it before. I haven’t seen it anywhere else since…

When you think about the number of school lunches that might be served on a given day across the country and the commonness of the food items, yes. Absolutely could be a total coincidence.

Not sure if this matters, but here are the school's demographics:

41% of Nyack Middle School students are White, 29% of students are Hispanic, 15% of students are Black, 8% of students are Asian, 6% of students are Two or more races, and 1% of students are Hawaiian

Chicken? Check. Watermelon. Check.

Fruit as a health alternative for a desert? Check.

Absolutely common. How many 10s of thousands of meals of all different combinations of items are served up every day. You should absolutely bet on this occurring.

Together?
Yes. Together. Why? Because meals often have fruits and veggies, and meals often have meat entrees. And you have so many danged meals being thrown together. And it's done haphazardly as a ****ing school lunch. Right, it's not like deep thought goes into this crap.

Is there a special sort of fruit pairing for chicken strips? I mean come on... stretch your brain a bit.

It's not obviously somebody trying to cause shit.

Do you think a school system would intentionally pair chicken, waffles and watermelon? You are skirting around the issue. You are not dumb.

I'm not skirting anything. I'm just trying to get you guys to stretch your brains a bit on this one.

Would a school system intentionally pair those items to cause trouble? No. Would they be pared at times without thinking about causing stir? Sure.

And it wasn't the school system that did this anyway.

You don't see it in Iowa. I have only seen it at Soul food restaurants. Do you live in a metro outside of Iowa?
Semi-rural town about 30 minutes outside Indianapolis. Guy who owns the restaurant is a Greek from Chicago suburbs.

I’m not saying it was done with racist intent. Could easily been a well-meaning choice.

I just highly doubt it was a coincidence.

Do people really think black folk just really like that food without associating their liking it with the racist trope? I feel like the only depictions I've ever seen of black people liking chicken and watermelon was through the trope.

That's what I am saying. No one in the school system would intentionally do this. I have already stated in this thread that Aramark did not make the decision on the menu, somebody else did (who?). The FIRST day of Black History Month the kids are served chicken and waffles. You want me to believe this is just a coincidence? I never remember watermelon being served at my school. The government never supplied that.

Again. I said there are exceptions. A Greek from Chicago would make sense. Edit: Are you talking about Maxine's?

I think you’re wrong here. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.

IMO, This was a stupid stunt. I don’t believe that a black history month menu featuring chicken & waffles paired with watermelon (in February no less) was a coincidence. Someone thought it would be a funny joke. It might have worked in 1983, maybe, but you can’t do it now.

Exactly. There's folks out there that get easily offended and triggered by stuff like this, which is why it's so stupid to do it. I read another article that said the meal was supposed to be philly cheesesteak, broccoli, and a fruit cup and the vendor changed it without alerting the school. A vendor that has had issues w/ this exact same thing, multiple times before.

Do I think it's a huge deal? As I said earlier, no. But I do think it's an incredibly stupid move by the food service.
Agree it was dumb for the food vendor to roll out this menu, but just as stupid is people being offended by it. Where is the negative connotation surrounding delicious chicken and waffles? If they had served crack cocaine, that would be offensive. Chicken and waffles ain’t that. Now excuse me while I Uber eats some chicken and mother fvcking waffles.

Are you from the South?

Now I want to see the full menu... notice:

Students at Nyack Middle School in New York were served chicken and waffles with a choice of watermelon for dessert on the first day of Black History Month on Wednesday, according to WABC-TV. The school's administration and its food vendor, Aramark, apologized after students and parents pointed out the racial stereotypes the menu reinforced.

The vendor didn't deliver the foods on the school menu for whatever reason. (unimaginable, I know)

And so chicken and waffles was chosen. (something really common)

And then one of the choices for desert -- a trend these days is to offer up fruit for desert to kids as a healthy option, watermelon being of the sweetest fruits there is makes a natural selection -- is watermelon.

I mean you could have had a menu that looked like:
Chicken and Waffles
Tater Tots
Brownie or Fruit (Watermelon amongst other fruit options? Who knows)

Solar. Dave Chappelle even jokes about this.

Oh, the reason you'd pull the stunt is because you know it would cause an uproar in the media and your minimum wage making ass would be laughing heartily. To me the prank is 10 times more attractive than it used to be -- you get attention.

Chicken and waffles is common in New York?

It's a trendy food thing. Not some regional secret.

I mean the trope was fried chicken anyway, right? And isn't fried chicken fingers -- ubiquitous across US school lunchrooms -- a better match anyway?

Your line of reasoning doesn't work.

I grew up eating Southern cooking - living in the South and having a Southern Mama. Fried chicken, pork chops, biscuits and gravy, sweet potatoes, collards and okra were a regular part of my childhood. I love watermelon too.
I’ve literally never had Fried Chicken and Waffles in my life.
And school cafeterias throughout the South had fried chicken on lunch menus regularly and slices of watermelon in season were also offered sometimes.
I’m not surprised that a school up in the northeast would make some clumsy attempt to offer a “Black” menu.
Sheesh. Offer these items year round. Nothing racist about that.

Look, I can see how this can be construed as racist, by the same types that literally look for anything to get triggered or offended. Chicken and waffles are served at all kinds of restaurants here in Florida, and they are definitely not exclusive to “black” restaurants, if that’s even a thing.
It ain’t a “Waffle House” staple, though! ;)
