School food vendor apologizes — again — for 'inexcusable' Black History Month menu

I grew up eating Southern cooking - living in the South and having a Southern Mama. Fried chicken, pork chops, biscuits and gravy, sweet potatoes, collards and okra were a regular part of my childhood. I love watermelon too.
I’ve literally never had Fried Chicken and Waffles in my life.
And school cafeterias throughout the South had fried chicken on lunch menus regularly and slices of watermelon in season were also offered sometimes.
I’m not surprised that a school up in the northeast would make some clumsy attempt to offer a “Black” menu.
Sheesh. Offer these items year round. Nothing racist about that.
U R Dumm.

Society- we need to feed our elementary kids so they don’t go hungry.

School- here is some delicious chicken and waffles plus watermelon

Society- Zomg you’re feeding them racism

It's a trendy food thing. Not some regional secret.

I mean the trope was fried chicken anyway, right? And isn't fried chicken fingers -- ubiquitous across US school lunchrooms -- a better match anyway?

Your line of reasoning doesn't work.
Haha. No. You are definitely being obtuse on purpose in this thread. You honestly believe that a NY middle school just happened to have chicken, waffles and watermelon on the first day of Black History Month? Is this what you are selling me?

Absolutely what I'm selling you.

Stupid coincidences happen every day. So many of them. I've only seen stupid coincidences cited a million times as proof of a higher being, for example.

I'm not discounting the possibility somebody modified the menu to cause shit. But my contention is that you're wrong to think that it just almost must be that this was purposeful. That's what I don't agree with.

(also, omg, wasting time on the internet arguing again)

I never said MUST be. Occam's Razor my friend.

Oh, now we're sharpening things up a bit. It seemed to be that a bunch of you were near "must be" territory... which is what I found silly.

As for Occam, I suppose it would come down to how often he thought a meal featuring these items might occur on a February day across the US vs the probability somebody would pair them in effort to stir up trouble.

My point is that probability says you're going to have this combo X amount of times every year in February. (provided not a lot of thought goes into the meal)

Do you live in the South?

This isn't a friend making food for a friend. If I made chicken and waffles for an African American buddy that came over, he'd probably think it was hilarious because we're friends.

This is a food service vendor providing meals for freaking middle school kids. It's just not a good look.
I don’t think middle schoolers in the year 2023 would have a clue over what the White wokers are up in arms about regarding the lunch menu.

Is Chicken and waffles common in your area?
I've seen it on menus but haven't ordered. (Midwest) My frame of reference on Chicken and Waffles is that over the past decade or so it kind of blew up as a cool foodie thing. Not unlike Poutine. All over food blogs, food network, that sort of thing.

Do you see Poutine on public school menus? You are trying to say that trending food ends up on public school menus. That's funny.

Again. I said there are exceptions. A Greek from Chicago would make sense. Edit: Are you talking about Maxine's?
Why would I be talking about Maxine’s? It is in downtown Indy and 30 minutes away from me.

And how does a Greek from the Chicago suburbs make sense? Are first generation Greek diner owners really into soul food?

Poutine strikes me as more of an adult centric food than Chicken and Waffles. Every dumb kid loves those two things.

In our digital age I think something like regionalism in cuisine starts to give way to the shared culture of internet food knowledge.

So yeah, I didn't really think twice about chicken and waffles on a school menu. Some of the hipper joints around here have it and it sounds fun.

It does sound like it has some history in the south. But I never thought of it as some sort of traditional soul food meal.

You must be younger. Chicken and waffles is traditional soul food.

School in question offers up fresh fruit every day. We were told watermelon was a choice.

Conceivably Chicken and Watermelon could be on the table the 16th again. (if it is a choice)

Philly Cheese Steak, broccoli and fresh fruit = fried chicken, waffles and watermelon? You are reaching. Edit: How do you know that watermelon is a common offering for fresh fruit? That is damn expensive for government lunches.

Apparently that was the planned lunch and the vendor gave them chicken and waffles instead, per the article.

I don't know on watermelon. Only that the school apparently makes it a habit of offering up fruit as a desert, seemingly... so the watermelon option fits their standard there.

Watermelon in the middle of winter is expensive I'd think. (although it still shows up in the midwest)

I am going to walk away. You apparently don't understand that someone probably did this on purpose. Can it be proved, no. Yet you have a very odd defense.

You can get chicken and waffles several places in the Quads. But now that you mention it, I’ve mostly seen it on the Illinois side.
There is a great place on the east side of Des Moines. It was on D&D. I am just saying that if you have a chicken and waffle shop is mostly going to be in a soul or southern restaurant. Not exactly a Midwest staple.

Oh for sure. We get a fair amount of that here being on the Mississippi - up from Memphis, St. Louis, etc.

I was born a Mississippi River boy as well. The economic success of the nose of Iowa is incredible. So glad I got out as soon as I could.

They are in the North. Again, this is not a big deal but you aren't going to find chicken and waffles in Iowa other than a Soul food restaurant. There might be a few exceptions but rare.
Dude, they have chicken and waffles at IHOP and Hardee’s/Carls Jr.

The sandwich? Do you see it on ANY public school menu in Iowa? This isn't a difficult question. Edit: The whole debate is a NY middle school serving chicken and waffles with watermelon on the first day of Black history month. Do you think this was an accident?

No. But I don’t see how it’s a bad thing. I don’t think they’re a negative connotation. Assume positive intent. It’s black history month. They’re going to be reading and learning about all the things black people did. Throwing a fuss about chicken and waffles is just throwing a fuss for attention.
If they served tacos or burritos on Cinco de Mayo would people give a shit?

You do know this wasn't approved by Aramark or the school system? You have to be ignorant to not know the negative connotation with fried chicken and watermelon with the black population. Do you need some links? Being naive doesn't make you correct.
