School food vendor apologizes — again — for 'inexcusable' Black History Month menu

Chicken & Waffles? Man, I wish our school lunch was that good growing up!

I swear, when my cracker a$$ is seen walking in, I better get biscuits and gravy with some sweet tea, baby!

In other news, Southern school is outraged because none of these items were available during black history month.

I'm sure we'll hear all about this on Bill Maher's next monolog.
And watermelon.

No it doesn't. Did you watch the video? This is getting funny.
Either you didn't pay attention to the video or you have impaired cognition. They clearly stated, and showed, that an earlier version of the menu for January had Chicken and Waffles planned for February 1.

Did you really watch the video?

Why the apology if it was a coincidence?
1) School changed menu, vendor failed to adjust -- still screwed up. (Vendor blamed change in leadership over the period)

2) Best PR move could definitely be apologize and move on, especially given the climate over race stuff.

Clearly this bolsters my claim that we shouldn't default to the position that this was malicious. What a coincidence that chicken and waffles appeared on the very day the school had planned chicken and waffles at earlier dates before revising the menu.

A food vendor failing to adjust their service to reflect a modified school menu is a completely understandable and innocuous mistake.

Knowing exactly what else was offered -- remember that a bunch of articles cited watermelon as an "option" offered, perhaps amongst other fruit -- could provide even more clarity.

I am not a person that declares racism often. You are being obtuse.

I wasn't thinking that? I don't have a problem with you. As far as I'm concerned this is just a simple argument over what probably happened. I guess I enjoy arguing. Apparently I don't get enough of that in my everyday life, haha.

Do you guys really not know about the history of fried chicken and watermelon being associated with racist images and stereotypes?

I knew those two for sure, but this is the first I have ever heard about waffles. That was news to me.

Same here on the waffles, I had never heard/seen any reference to waffles and any race in particular. Huh.

Is it clear who made this decision? Yes, Aramark is apologizing, but what do we know about the specifics of who made the menu choice?

Are chicken and waffles off limits at all times of the year or just Black History month?

It wasn't Aramark or the school system. That's why this is odd.

They are in the North. Again, this is not a big deal but you aren't going to find chicken and waffles in Iowa other than a Soul food restaurant. There might be a few exceptions but rare.

‘Chicken and waffles are anything but rare in Colorado. My kids order them all the time.

chicken & waffles for black history month? Sketchy…… but okay.

Add to it watermelon? Someone was trying to make a point or a joke. Definitely intentional.

An earlier poster compared it to Fuzzy Zoeller’s comment. I still like Fuzzy, but he was tone deaf in that moment.

Do you know that the South used chicken and waffles to denigrate Black Americans? Kind of like the old watermelon jokes. How young are you?
I've seen several videos from black people saying how ridiculous it is to complain about feeding them food they like. It's like Mexicans complaining about tacos on Mexican independence day. The people who complain about everything (on both ends of the right/left spectrum) are making it difficult for all of us.

"Chicken and waffles, as a combined recipe, first appeared in the United States' colonial period in the 1600s in Pennsylvania Dutch country. The traditional Pennsylvania Dutch version consists of a plain waffle with pulled, stewed chicken on top, covered in gravy. Although the dish originated in eastern Pennsylvania, it is generally found throughout the Northeastern United States.

A version using fried chicken is associated with the American South. The soul-food version of chicken and waffles grew in popularity after the opening of the Wells Supper Club in Harlem, New York, in 1938. The waffle is served as it would be for breakfast, with condiments such as butter and syrup. This combination of foods is beloved by many people who are influenced by traditions of soul food passed down from past generations of their families. This version of the dish is popular enough in Baltimore, Maryland to become a local custom."

My favorite comment from the article's comments section [from a black poster]:

Funny part is only ppl was mad was the whites lmfao blacks was eating that shit up 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

IMO it's because of today's climate. People have to publicly apologize for everything whether they believe they were in the wrong or not. We live in the most hyper sensitive period of my life. That's what happens when everyone gets a voice and everyone's voice is given equal weight--wrong or right.

Chicken and waffles found everywhere, means nothing
watermelon: found everywhere, means nothing
When you put them together is says something other than lunch menu. And as yellow said you might as well have added kool-aide or purple drank.

It never ceases to amaze me how hard some folks will twist their logic to try and provide cover/plausible deniability to bad actors. Sad, really.

Was this incident super egregious or horrible? Nope. Should it have even amounted to a news story? Meh, maybe not. But to try and pretend like it was a "coincidence" just makes you look dumb.

Someone decided to be a snarky a-hole and got called out. Not sure why we can't all just admit that and move on.

reminds me that our company provides lunch for various holidays, typically it's the same thing each year:

Thanksgiving/Christmas - turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie
Cinco de Mayo - taco bar
July 4th - burgers/hot dogs
Easter - ham, scalloped potatoes and apple pie
MLK Day - BBQ beef sandwiches, grits, colored greens

is this horrible no, is it a print news story, no.
Is it a yahoo, social media thing. yes.

Imagine this was a cartoon in a newspaper. You don't think someone should have said something? If the answer to that is yes, then whoever did it deserves a bit of crap over it.
This story was brought to my attention by students. If they thought it was in poor taste then it probably was.

Taking my 'non-English speaking Guatemalan coworkers' to lunch this afternoon and we're gonna have tacos and cervesa. If you don't like it, you can eat a d!ck:)

You are correct that it means nothing. Except to point out to someone who incorrectly claims they are rare. They aren’t.

I've never heard that. And I lived in N.Carolina for many years in the 60s and 70s. Of course I lived in Chapel Hill. Or, as the rest of the state called it, Commie Hill. So maybe I just missed that particular slur.

I think it would have been pretty interesting if the company had done serious research on what slaves ate and then included some meals like that on their menu. Would that have been OK, or would they have been hammered?

I agree. This one just seems a little odd. I am definitely not a person that believes everything is racist. Not sure why this one bugs me a bit.

It's not even racist, per se. Just assholey.

It's Beavis and Butthead level humor "Heh heh, heh heh, black people like chickens and waffles and watermelon, let's totally replace the regular menu on Feb. 1 with that since it's black history month. Heh heh, heh heh."

Just dipshitty.

The only thing we know for sure is syrup has no business getting on chicken or eggs and hashbrowns or anything else besides pancakes and waffles and French toast. Separate plate absolutely required.
