School shooting in Michigan

Someone on twitter was saying that parents had complained to the school about the kid but they hadn't done anything about him. If that is the case there will be some huge payments.

As there should be. School needs to stop being a right and instead be a privilege. Stop keeping the violent students in the buildings.
100%. Visited my sister who is a counselor at a school for kids that are kicked out of regular schools. It’s pathetic. Kids assaulting staff on the regular. Kids so disabled they throw feces. Their staff to student ratio is a huge waste of time and effort. World needs plenty of bartenders.

Depends what they were complaining about and basis. Schools aren't judge and jury-- they can't just do things because parents complain.

I still got WaPo and NYT alerts about this, I guess it's nice knowing 3 fatalities and several injuries still moves the needle for those organizations.

"Authorities received a 911 call about an active shooter at the school just before 1 p.m., McCabe said. More than a hundred 911 calls came in to dispatch, he told reporters. The suspect was taken into custody at the school within five minutes of the first call."

That's pretty swift response and resolution, but gd, sad

What is really needed is specific protocols at the state level that get the problem kids removed from the classroom.

if each district has their own rules it likely leads to lawsuits and legal challenges that local districts can’t afford.

We need to bring back the US Psychiatric Hospitals. In the 50s-60s we began a deinstitutionalization of this system due to many getting caught up in the system who perhaps did not belong there and a desire to save money. But there were plenty of folks who did belong there. The pendulum swung too far and now we don't have enough beds and the result are millions of non functioning people, often wandering the streets homeless, and violent psychotics who families can't reign in until tragedy strikes and they end up in prisons.

That sounds like socialism!! We'd prefer to keep paying the cost in blood.

Video of the shooter trying to trick a teacher into opening the door. Shooter says "Bro" and students GTFO. Click for the sound.

Unreal. Has it been confirmed if this was actually the shooter talking and not the police? The voice didn't sound like a 15-year-old but either way, I am glad the kids went with their gut instinct.

This shit needs to stop.

Not sure about everywhere else but in Florida an ESE kid can light the cafeteria on fire and the most that can happen to him is 10 days suspension. Parents push for their kids to be labeled ESE so they can have a get out of jail free card. It’s awful. I wonder if this is a similar case.

Justifiably so. One kid didn't go to school today because he told his parents most of his friends were staying home because something was up...

We can talk about watching for signs, but watching is passive, why do people rarely take any action when the signs present themself? Federal legislation, while good natured, primarily address macro issues but these things have to be identified and prevented at the local level with parents, teachers and fellow students.

We could stop it all but we won’t. Everyone thinks they need a gun in this country. Scared of their own shadows. We’re still going by something written almost 250 years ago. A civilized society doesn’t need guns. We’re way to far down the rabbit hole to ever go back. Happens every few months or even weeks now and we just move on. I feel bad for my grandkids.
