Recruiting, unfortunately. Getting Kemerer and Marinelli will help, but we still need more to keep up.

PSU has been killing it in the recruiting dept. I've thought for some time that the recruiting rankings mistakenly overweight top 100 and underweight top 10. So when you look at 4 years from 2011 to 2014, d1 wrestling rates recruiting classes for PSU ahead of Iowa in 2 years and behind in 2 other years.
PSU had #1 recruiting class in 2014, #4 in 2011, #7 in 2013, and #17 in 2012. Iowa had #1 in 2012, #6 in 2013, #9 in 2014 and #20 in 2011. Sounds about even right?
Now the details:
If you look at top 10 all weight classes combined, you see PSU landed:
#1 McIntosh
#3 Megaludis
#3 Guilibon
#3 Retherford
#4 Nolf
#5 Nevills
#7 Nickal
and Iowa landed:
well... no one in top 10.
Iowa's #1 ranked class in 2012 had Skon #15 as their top recruit, followed by Gilman #16, #20 Brooks, #23 Clark, and #41 Meyer.
In 2011, PSU ranked #4 in recruiting, pulling in "only two" top one hundred guys in #1 McIntosh and #3 Megaludes. This was behind #3 Central Michigan, who pulled in 6 top hundred guys in #13 Hodgkins, #19 Horan, # 43 Pommerenke, #46 Kielbassa, #88 Ottinger and #98 Lucas Smith.
One can argue about the need for depth on a team and finding a not highly ranked hidden talent, and those are legit concerns.
But statistically, I think it's pretty obvious where the points are coming from in March.
Iowa has made strides in the past two years, getting Kemerer and Marianelli, both top ten guys, but the need to keep it up and get more imho.
