Seems like Fran is a liability right now on the sideline

Dr Tom was 4-14, then 9-9 the next season. Dr Tom was 5-13 and then 9-9 the season after that. I guess by your definition, Dr Tom couldn’t coach either.

I never mentioned 3-15.

Did Dr Tom make changes? What happened after those two seasons? I was in Hs and didn’t pay much attention to Iowa basketball/Football. Wasn’t until college I started to follow them more closely.

Oh, I agree and by no means am a I a big Fran supporter. I've been pretty hard on him. This post that Fran is a liability just made me think what, if anything, can Fran do to right the ship. The past is the past but if refs are holding a grudge, I'm not really sure what Fran can do even if he finally "gets it". He's dug such a hole, one has to ask if it's even possible for him to dig out of it. I mean he's put the players in a terrible position yet they are the only ones who can help him.

There seems like there has to be some sort of truce called. If this can't happen, Fran will remain a liability. I'm not sure how to fix this without $9 million.

Maybe health reasons force him to step away?? Isn’t that what old Urban did at a couple of places.

Reading comprehension, guy!! He went (9-9) in both seasons following 4-14 and 5-13. That would be .500 or what you’d call proof that he couldn’t coach.

But Connor NEVER fouls - haven't you noticed his reaction when he gets whistled...…?

And haven't you noticed the reactions of every other college basketball player in the country who gets whistled, even for the most egregious, physical, obvious foul? If you see somebody who does NOT complain about the call, mark it down, because that happens even less often than being called for palming the ball.

He can thank himself for the situation he finds himself in. He needs a severe dose of anger management. I switched over to the UNI vs Bradley game and I saw Jacobsen calmly accept the flagrant 1 call on the dead ball technical that resulted in a 6 point possession for Bradley and you would never have know by his demeanor or the team's play that the call went against them. In my opinion, Coach McCaffery would have made it worse by getting T'd up.

At Iowa, "toughness" is defined by getting mad and speaking up/retaliating when you are slighted. This includes things like arguing on the court, speaking out in the press room, voicing your opinion to referees in the corridors, or tweeting back at critical fans. At other schools, "toughness" is defined by playing through adversity -- showing grit and doing your job, even when the cards are stacked against you.

All in all, I am a McCaffery apologist. Though this latest skid is alarming, the season as a whole can be taken as a success. But I am not a fan of the way "toughness" seems to be defined and promoted within the culture of Iowa basketball. (And I think this is to blame for a pattern of in-season and in-game collapses).

I was watching his demeanor during the game yesterday, it was the calmest Fran I've ever seen, it was like he was given a chill pill before the game. Its obvious he's on the naughty list, and he's got the short leash he's earned. But the team played with almost no passion yesterday and he seemed afraid to coach the team, certainly he had nothing to say to the officials... as the calls went 5-0,6-0,7-0 for Nebraska while his team is being mugged at both ends.

I get he can't tell the refs how he really feels, but when the team is sleep walking on the court the team needs the Fran that will get in their face and let them know its unacceptable. If this team is going to win another game, they need the Franimal back.
we were up 16 points at one time .

Sorry yeah Fran can’t coach. His curent team has quit. His other teams in the past have quit on him. So yeah 10-10 is not tremendous. It’s laughable with one of the easier Big Ten slates. 4-14 and 3-15 coaches probably can’t coach either, but they will make changes to their programs. Fran chooses not to and it’s his bed he’s making.
we were up 16 at one time yesterday and they quit ? very stupid . we did go to overtime didnt we ?

UNI ended up down 5 after the late dead ball technical and subsequent 6 point possession and the players like their coach just played through the mistake. They did not let up and almost pulled the game back out of the loss column. So, I totally agree with your example of toughness.

Fran's in a real crappy position. I don't think he can do anything right. Not trying to be a jerk, he's just under the microscope by everyone. He did make his bed but it's not right the kids have to pay for it.
And the corrupt officials should feel bad about that, but they don't.
