Session II Thread

We got much, much farther away from the typical attacking Iowa style over the course of several years under Zalesky leading up to his departure. Tom has gotten us much closer since then.

The main factor that has influenced our degree of aggression in recent years, IMO, has been recruiting. We've had more weak spots in the lineup in recent years, and even some of our AA's in recent years have reached that status through development more than coming in as blue-choppers. Aggression is directly proportional to talent in most cases.

Couldn't agree more. Been a while since Iowa has had so many holes at once.

My snarky response is maybe we would be up to third place. Seriously, sucks for Stoll, but he will be right there over the next 3 years. Advancing isn't enough anymore. We need wrestlers who can score points. Gilman has that attitude, Stoll goes for it when healthy, and Brooks once in awhile. We have a few more guys who could advance, maybe finalists. But they will not get us the bonus points we need to compete with PSU.

It's ok to get snarky right about now but he would have a legit shot at AA. Meyer really screwed the pooch for us today. I didn't expect Coop to get pinned but I also didn't think he'd get by Kent State either.

Tom had very good teams his first couple years but the past 5 yrs have not been pretty. Last years senior class was a top recruit class that regressed by the time they reached their senior season.

Sadly, it's a lot more exciting hanging around for the wrestlebacks when we're actually wrestling for something. Still hoping for Cooper to work some magic...he finished the season strong and ran into a tough TD that led to him getting pinned.

I think many people have forgotten how few bp weve had in the last few yrs.

Nah, no reason to be snarky. I feel bad for Stoll, that dude has the attitude that many of us are craving. I believe he would have been AA this year, minimum. The Cooper pin surprised me. I think we expected too much from Meyer. I know the weight class emptied out after last year, but honestly why should we have expected Meyer to place highly? He has shown some flashes, but I think we are guilty of very wishful thinking.

Top Scorers...not the pattern we're looking for, and unfortunately it's become our norm these last few years... :(

Kyle Snyder (Ohio State) 5.5
Zain Retherford (Penn State) 5.5

I agree about meyer, the hole at 41 didn't help. We essentially had 3 big holes counting Stoll, & I am not counting Meyer in that.

Wasn't too much to ask of Meyer...he could have got himself to the quarters. We always seem to have a guy like this that craps out in the first round in the past four or five years.

It is shocking to me that Bo's not on that list.

Sure, the development of last year's highly touted senior class was disappointing, but my point was that we didn't just recently start getting away from Iowa style, aggressive wrestling over the last few years -- which were all markedly better than what we had during Zalesky's last few years. PSU's emergence under Cael and tOSU's perfect storm last year have a lot to do with that perception, too.

Of course, every Iowa fan wants to see team titles every year. The last few haven't been what we wanted, but let's not get too carried away. Titles are always what we're after, but we've still been the most consistent program in the nation and have easily the longest team trophy streak, plus we won Big Tens and finished 2nd just last year.

We want more, but recruiting is picking up and we're far better off than a decade ago. Just trying to keep it real.

Javier Gasca III, Michigan State's only qualifier, went 0-2 at Nationals today, scoring 0 points.

Michigan State, as a team, did 1/2 a point better this year than they did last year.

Better of than a decade ago, but how about the past 5 years? And granted, we've had some injuries (and Nick Moore), but still, we've been pretty stagnant as far as progressing...

You may be right, I am just saying that I didn't see the evidence that the guy was a top 8 kind of guy. Won't question the motor, just not sure of the rest. We need at least one more guy who just dominates. And maybe it's just me, but we look like robots now. Give me a little more Rico Chiaparelli. I like a little funk. I think we can be technically sound, but still be creative and fun to watch. I guess I just showed my age.

Well, you'd better make the first one count

My buddies who wrestled at ISU always said Brands benefited from 2 recruiting classes when he started at Iowa (the Iowa recruits and the Va Tech recruits. Cael benefitted from this too. I unfortunately am beginning to believe my buddies are right.

Yeah but they're biased and will say anything to try and make an Iowa team look bad. Don't let your buddies get the best of you!
