Seydou Traore Commits to IOWA

Don't want to stir the pot, but I hope that wasn't directed at the fans. A little PMAC in him if it was. Don't need to go there. Fresh start for next season. Looks to be a solid addition. Leave it there instead.

Are you kidding me….i wish all these players called out fans 🤷‍♂️ then we’d really have some fun.

Quite frankly why not…. We get to watch them in a microscope and comment on everything they do… They should be able to do the same to us.

Looks like a good get by Fran. Provides much needed athleticism and defense.

If Payton returns, this team could surprise people.

Oh, and @curtisj157, looks like @Franisdaman finally heard you about bringing in more black players. Keep up the good work, Fran!
at least @curtisj157 won't have to staple his nut sack to the floor LOL

Slow down speed racer. We won’t surprise anyone. Still have one of the weaker rosters in the league. Still staring down the barrel of 15 total losses and lower division finish in the conference. I’d still rather put my prick in a Veg-O-matic than watch the garbage we keep putting out on the floor year after year.

Interesting that Traore’s agent is Daniel Poneman. The Iowa staff has had a relationship with Poneman since he was just a youngster scouting talent in the Chicago area. Looks like that relationship may be bearing fruit for the Hawkeye coaches.
What is the standard cut for an agent representing a college guy? And how does that now work? Do Fran and the other coaches reach out to the player first or the player's agent? Does the agent send out feelers to different programs letting them know his guy is available, with a caveat that all contacts with the player must go through the agent? Crazy new world. I think I liked it better when everyone just paid guys but pretended like it didn't happen. The illusion of pure college student-athletes.

I won't get too excited until I see him try to defend a 6'8 240 lb PF. I agree he seems athletic but in no way would I consider him a PF.

I'm curious where Fran plugs him in. I'd like to go back and watch the Kansas and UConn games in full to see his defense. In the box score both those teams' forwards (especially Kansas) did well against Manhattan but that might just be a byproduct of Manhattan being overwhelmed on the road.

Then do it and put us all out of your misery

Easy, killer.

I said could.

And that is true. There’s a lot of things that have to happen, but there are pieces in place to make Iowa more competitive than people would have at first predicted.

I feel like the traditional 5 positions are not as relevant any more. He is a Forward. Not a prototypical stretch 4 but good size for a “wing.” We at least have some options:

Harding
Thelwell
Dix
Payton
Pryce
Koch
Tadjo
Dembele
Trayore
Freeman

Some unknowns but a lot more athleticism, which should elevate defense at minimum

He hopefully won’t be guarding too many PF but I could see him guarding some guards and shutting them down. He is the perfect zone defense player , he will be able to get out to the 3 point line while giving weak side help underneath.

I have hoped that Fran would tap into African recruits to secure the athleticism we need since we struggle to land out of state African- Americans we pursue.
Africans do not usually grow up wanting to go to Mich or IU...we have a fighting chance with these guys.
I believe he’s from NYC.

Less than half the league actually plays with a true "PF" anymore anyways. Just look at the 6 Big Ten teams that made the tournament last year on their most used 4 on KenPom:
Purdue: Mason Gillis 6'6 225
Illinois: Quincy Guerrier 6'8 220
Nebraska: Juwan Gary 6'6 220
Northwestern: Brooks Barnhizer 6'6 215
Wisconsin: Tyler Wahl 6'9 225
Michigan St: Malik Hall 6'8 225

For reference, KenPom has Traore listed at 6'7 215. Not sure I really see a huge difference. There are of course going to be some games where he's guarding bigger guys such as Malik Reneau at Indiana, but I'd also wager that Reneau guarding a quicker, perimeter oriented player is also a mismatch on the other end as well, which is usually the tradeoff when you play 2 bigs.

I encourage anyone to watch his game against UConn. You see his overall skill set. I think he'll flourish under Fran. He got out in transition multiple times. He can handle the ball like a guard. He had multiple drives against UConn. Not all went in but he's actually very quick and active.
He gets low in his defensive stance top of the key against a guard and crashes the board at the 28:25 mark.
17:25-18:25 is another good sequence of his overall skill set. Very active.
45:00-46:20 is where I think Fran and Iowa will love him. Gets out in transition twice.

I didn't think his shot looked all that bad despite his season numbers. He cut to the basket from top of the key in a lot of Manhattan's plays but was always covered up. That's about the only set for him that I saw. He was also tasked to create his own offense a handful of times. Seemed very mismanaged but then again they were playing UConn.

I've yet to watch the Kansas game but I can definitely see how he could be successful at Iowa.

I agree with you. I posted this on the first page but he did step up against 2 very good teams.

I like the rebounding and steal numbers, for sure.

6-9 (67%) from 2
................................
6-13 (46%) Overall shooting

4-4 (100%) FTs

16 Points
8 Rebounds (2 Offensive)
3 Steals
1 Assist

Against UConn last season:

27 minutes

1-2 (50%) from 3
4-13 (31%) from 2
................................
5-15 (33%) Overall shooting

2-2 (100%) FTs

13 Points
8 Rebounds (2 Offensive)
2 Steals

2 Assists
1 Block

Yes, sir. Seydou Traore was born in New York, NY; not sure, however, where his parents (Abraham Traore & Mariam Sylla) are originally from. I am going to guess West Africa.

Incoming freshman Nogbou Chris Tadjo was born in Montreal Canada but I believe his parents are from Ivory Coast (southern West Africa).

Sophomore Ladji Dembele is originally from Mali in West Africa.

If these West African players find success at Iowa, that could be a very valuable recruiting pipeline for Iowa for years to come.
