Should Caitlin fix her Mechanical Flaw?

Caitlin, when hearing this....

There's an old saying: "Pick your battles."

Doug's an idiot for picking this one.

Doug is an idiot most of the time. He's one of the few I just turn off immediately, hate it when he fills in for DP. He's Cowherd school of just saying shit to get attention.

Good grief, if we're going to discuss pure shooting flaws, he'd be trying to fix Larry Bird and Kevin Durant (who also comes up the middle like Caitlin).

It's just dumb and click bait nonsense.

True on the thin-skinned fans, but I love seeing all the non-Iowans getting her back, too.

I think "broken" is a stretch. Non-traditional, not what you teach kids starting to shoot, for sure. To me broken mechanics are defined by poor results. To shoot the % she does against high level competition (i.e. not just H-O-R-S-E with no defense) tells me nothing is broken.

I think of a pitcher with an awkward 3-quarters delivery that is a bit herky-jerky. But his K/9 is 12 and his WHIP is under 1. Non traditional for sure, but nobody is saying that pitcher is broken.

Probably just semantics. I respect Gottlieb for not being afraid to say what he thinks. But he needs to filter about half of what he says and just keep it in anyway.

Great thread showing Iowa’s incredibly thin skinned fanbase. He isn’t wrong about her broken mechanics. Probably developed that motion to get more power into long balls before she was ready to shoot. Definitely worth pondering how good she could be with perfect form.

It’s not thin skinned to say don’t fix what isn’t broken.

"Perfect form" for one person may not be perfect form for someone else. She seems to have it figured out pretty well.

That pic shows her right arm and hand off to the side and her left hand on top of the ball. She doesn’t shoot like that. Elbow center chest with a follow through with the left and doing almost nothing. Tell Larry bird to stop shooting from behind his head.

In many cases it'd be more stimulating to provide tweets that strip the identity of the tweeter, so the focus could be on the content of the tweet.

So in this case that would change what?

Yeah terrible picture to use trying to make that point. Looks more like she’s passing than shooting. Though she does shoot from that side, but imo it’s to get her shot off quicker from her left hand dribble. Obviously is far from a mechanical flaw

She does shoot that one, and repositions her hand before the shot

It is not so much about bringing the ball up in the middle, it is more about the fact she thumbs it with her left hand. It is pretty amazing how well she shoots it with what should have been changed a long time ago. I am guessing she was a two handed shooter before she built up her strength.

The Utah Jazz told Jeff Hornaceck if he wanted to stay in the league, he needed to quit thumbing the ball with his left hand. His first summer with them they taped his thumb to his hand so he wouldn't thumb it. Worked out pretty well for him.

Thanks for sharing.... The video tells the full story...not a damn screenshot from th video.

She was shooting a step back to her left.... Pulling the ball across her body from her left hand dribble to shoot from her right hand.

I guess the idiot thinks she should dribble with her right hand before shooting, so the ball is in proper position at all times? No more step back shots dribbling left?

Or how it might destroy her shot, so there is that............

Not a big fan of Gottlieb, but not sure why he is being attacked here. First, he compliments Clark. Then he just asks if someone should fix the flaw, he does not say that the flaw needs to be fixed. He is just initiating a somehwat interesting conversation.

Similar discussions would pop up occasionally about Reggie Miller's shooting form, Arnold Palmer's golf swing, Rod Carew's batting stance,...

I guess if you like proposing pointless questions. NOT a single decent coach is going to mess with her shot.... Not when you can shoot it like her.

Any coach suggesting to modify her shot should be terminated immediately.

What the hell is Gottleib doing here. Lot's of championship golfers like Jim Furyk have very strange and different swings, Jeff Bagwell had the widest stance ever in MLB but he hit a ton, and Caitlin does have a bit of a different release angle but maybe that release is her thing and it helps control a flying elbow or something.

There have been a lot of very good MLB pitchers with somewhat odd deliveries like Ron Guidry, Mark Fridrich

How'd your wedding to your cousin go?

Fran and Doug are pretty tight from their ND days... I think Fran might have been his lead recruiter.

Huge Fran guy. Said he stood up to his dad when he was berating him at ND (before the scandal) for playing poorly in the locker room. It may have gotten abusive, I don't remember, but a Fran stepped in and protected him.

This is a better video by far. It’s a slow mo that captures her load and release on several different shot varieties. First I’ll say that I used to travel around Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota participating and teaching in shooting clinics.

That said, Caitlin’s flaw with her jumper (it’s a common and manageable one) is that her left hand often times turns in on the release of the ball. Her left hand is her guide hand, and should really only be used during the initial load of her shot (catch and gather), but Caitlin has a tendency to keep it connected until release and her left palm floats towards the hoop instead of dropping or disengaging at the point of the release. What this can do is what we call thumbing the ball which can force misses to the left. This is for catch and shoot or stop and pop opportunities.

Her patented step back utilizes an entire different set of mechanics. Step back to the left requires a right handed shooter to bring the ball back across their body to the shot hand side. Caitlin’s biggest issue while doing this move is keeping her right elbow locked in line with the right knee ( which should be facing the hoop). Occasionally that right elbow will float out of alignment to the right. This is what was happening to her in the big ten tournament.

Her load on her shot is damn near perfect. I’m strictly speaking hips down now. Occasionally I would like to see her base set further apart especially when she’s jacking up 30 footers, but the amount of explosion she gets from her hips is the reason she’s Cc.

That is a lot analysis you got from that video.

Can you pull up some other 3 to 4 year old videos and get in depth on them….you think Petras is going to be able to take Iowa to the playoffs during his senior year?

Think anyone ever told Monet to stop painting lilies? Like...Im sure they did, but they were never taken seriously.

Interesting.

The most prolific scorer in Division 1 history.
The NCAA career record holder for 3 point field goals.
And someone is critiquing her form?

She shoots from parking lots so arenas sell out. I'll take Caitlin's technique and shooting %'ages over this guy's opinion.

Imagine how good Jack Nicklaus could have been if only he had corrected that “flying elbow” that plagued his golf game all his career……

As a youth basketball coach I rarely work on the boys shot angle. As long as they are consistent is what matters. When they start changing the elbow slot is when I’ll help, it’s just like anything with muscle memory. Keep it the same each and every time!

It seems to me that one of the millions of CC videos I have seen, she talked about her shot technique and how she and her shooting coaches have work on her form. Seems to me she fully understood that her technique might take a hit as she worked on her mascot shots but her desire to expand her range was well worth the compromise of her technique. Life is options and trade offs…..even on the basketball court.
