Should we worry about Rutgers?

I really hope this is a boring game and Iowa wins by 30. I had a dream last night though that Iowa won 67-62, so we might have to sweat it out.

Lol, you know the hawks are doing good when you're dreaming about them. You would crap if that ended up being the score. I think the hawks win pretty comfortably.

Purdue and Rutgers had 45 rebound attempts at their end of the floor. Purdue got 27 offensive rebounds and Rutgers pulled down 18. Even if Iowa shot 2-23 from the 3 point line we would still win comfortably. Rutgers has a bunch of guys out up front. Coppin State was bad, but I think they play Rutgers pretty close right now. One of the easiest wins we will get all year

If it weren't for our veteran starting 5 I might be worried about this being a trap game. However, considering the leadership of the four seniors, this game should not be close and hopefully we are able to clear the bench with plenty of time remaining. It would be nice to get Williams and Fleming about 10 minutes each tonight. Gesell has been logging a lot of minutes, so it would be nice to rest him from time to time and this will be the best opportunity on paper during the entire B1G season.

My main concern, and we've shown this tendency, is that we settle for a lot of long range jumpers right out of the gate instead of attacking the basket, I fear this is the one way this game is closer than it should be if we are cold from the outside. Purdue dominated this team on the boards and in the paint, we should follow their lead and work inside out.

With all the upsets in college basketball this year, I don't think we should be overlooking anybody. Rutgers is bad, but weirder things have happened. I think Fran is taking on the mindset of Kirk this year, where it is just onto the next one, hoping to go 1-0.

This.

Anything can happen in CBB and we haven't had a true off night in a while. This is a good game in that if we have a bad shooting night or high turnover night, you can still pull out a win.

Almost anything can happen in college basketball, but Rutgers competing with...let alone beating...Iowa isn't one of them. Iowa could start the last five guys on the bench and win this game by 10. It'll be over in the first 10 minutes, and then we'll get some lengthy playing time for Wagner, Williams, Fleming, the Soukups, and Okey Ukah. Iowa - 101, Rutgers - 59. On to Purdue.

I worry about every game, but it seems as though the players are (at least) saying all the right things you'd want to hear going into a game of this type.

I'll relax when the Soukup twins are throwing up shots.

Rutgers is shorthanded and not very good. They do seem to play hard. I think the Hawks win easily, but I think Fran gets enough minutes for the backups that it will likely be a 15-20 point game at the end.

If we leave healthy and with a W we should be happy. It's still a B1G game and they have guys on scholarship too.

IDK, it seems like whenever Iowa should have a blowout that it is too close for comfort.

This is the way Im feeling. All it takes is for Iowa to be "off" on their shots and Rutgers to get "hot" from 3 land. If that happens it could very well be a ballgame. I hate how people dismiss them and think its an automatic win. The recent trend in college basketball seems to say, "anyone can be anyone" on any given night.

I guess in recent years we have had opportunities like tonight and we always seemed to piss it down our leg and lose. I am hoping tonight isn't the case. Rutgers mind you knocked of top 5 Wisky last year( i guess Wisky w/out Kaminsky) but still that was a HUGE upset.

This would by far and away be the biggest upset of the season and maybe in a couple years. So no, I'm not using the trend of this basketball season to let me worry about this game.

Iowa plays defense. Not worried at all about this game, even if Rutgers were to get hot from the outside...40 minutes of good defense will win this game. Our offense can be subpar...but we will bring it on defense.

Iowa should win but that's why you play the game....

So many examples of the unthinkable say hello...

Wisky (16-2) v Rutgers last year
Iowa v NW LA State 06'
Houston v NC State 83'
Villanova v Georgetown 85'

Rutgers is quite possibly the worst Big 10 team in recent history. If they pick up more than 2 conference wins this year I will really be surprised.

The only way Iowa doesn't win by 30 tonight is if Fran decides to play the subs a lot.

OK, I get the first two, but you are using two teams good enough to get to the title game actually winning it to equate to Rutgers beating IA? That's nutsery. A 16 beating a 1 might involve two teams further apart than IA losing to Rutgers. Might...

Sure I was only throwing out a couple of match ups that had similar 'no way X team will lose this game'. You can probably look at most seasons and find an upset or two on the scale of Rugters beating a team like Iowa. It was not meant to rank the quality of the teams in the game but the idea that crazy stuff can happen on any given night. Heck we lost an exhibition to a D2 team that shocked many in our fan base.

Again I do not see Iowa losing but will feel a whole lot better when we see the deep reserves playing.

Rutgers game last year is a little deceiving. There was no Kaminsky or Jackson and we now see what Wiscy looks like without them. Rutgers, although bad was much better than this year. Rutgers is bottom 10% of all of college basketball, they are absolutely pathetic.

Hope Jarrod goes for 40 tonight , doubt it cos if he goes off, the freshman will be in and playing instead, but I think he could tonight otherwise.

It's a road game in the big ten, never a gimmie. I'm confident our senior led team can handle them, and I love the young talent we have on the bench but the other side has guys on scholarship too. We are not going to beat them with our bench players all playing left handed as some on here suggest.

Look, any road game in the B1G is going to be tough. Be better come out ready to play, or yes, even Rutgers could sneak up on us and make it a game.

Jumping on them early will be important, the one thing they WILL do for us, is give up easily.

Point spread doesn't matter in my opinion. Iowa just needs to play with focus and passion the way it has in Big Ten season and without injury. If Rutgers shoots 80% and beats us, it will look bad, but we would move on. Not likely to happen.

bigger concern may be getting out of NJ as soon as possible after the game given the big snow storm headed that way. Last thing we need is to have screwed up travel and get the team out of sink (think Indiana a couple years ago when game was cancelled and Iowa had extra travel. Team never seemed to get its legs back after that.

I worry that the OP spends most of his retirement on Pepto Bismol due to worrying so much.

Yes. He's a posting Rolaids Reunion. He predicted Iowa losing every game but one (North Texas) on the football board this year.

Stunned he didn't post he had read Rutgers had a good week of practice.

This is a game where the final score truly won't matter, but how we get there will. Do the starters look sharp? Then we'll see reserves. I'm hoping Williams gets significant minutes.
