So says SI:

"Top-ranked teams playing on the road in the state of Iowa, pay heed: Nothing comes easy in the Hawkeye state.

Five No. 1 teams have already lost this season, and when No. 19 Iowa State upset No. 1 Oklahoma, 82–77, in Ames on Monday night, it marked the third time it happened in Iowa. On Nov. 21, Northern Iowa knocked off North Carolina. On Dec. 29, Iowa upset Michigan State. And in Monday’s win, the Cyclones took down a Sooners team that had just been named the AP No. 1 for the first time since 1990."

So despite my distaste for George N. and his gang, having all three state schools knock off a #1 in the same season, in consecutive months, is pretty cool. And Iowa's one-point loss in Ames looks that much better, I guess. OU certainly never built a 20 point lead in Ames.

Anyway, lots of historical moments in Hawkeye football and basketball this year, and this sweep by the state of Iowa is amazing. And ya gotta like how SI's intro to the ISU story references the "Hawkeye state." That has to twist the knickers of Niang and company.

That can't of happened to ANY state EVER that 3 state schools beat different #1 ranked teams in the same year.

CanadaHawk, I agree. It's insane...especially when one of the teams is mid-major UNI.

Only time it has ever happened in the past is 1997-98 where UNC, Duke, and NC State all beat #1 ranked teams in the same season. Pretty special time for basketball in the state of Iowa.

And someone would then ask that with schools like Indiana, Purdue, Indiana State, and Notre Dame, why it's never happened in "the basketball state" of Indiana too. Indiana State perhaps had only fleeting prominence when they had Larry Bird then, but...

I (kind of) postponed my hatred for ISU during the game because this is a pretty cool thing for our state. Now, I hate them again.

Eh...its probably pretty rare for 3 different schools in a state to even host the #1 team in a season, much less have all 3 beat them. Its fluky. Take nothing away from the accomplishment of Iowa, UNI, and ISU, but you can't really hold it against other states' schools for not doing it, because it take a lot of luck to even have that opportunity, much less beat the #1 team 3 times.

Agree about the "Hawkeye State" reference. I love it every time I hear that. The fact that it tweaks the 'clones is just icing.

Get out of here with your reasoning. You're cramping our fun.

The scary part is ISU could have a chance to make it #4 on Monday. Kansas is coming to town with only UNC ranked ahead of them as of today.

Too bad Iowa doesn't play Maryland at home. They could end up #1 at some point.

What an Awesome year for State of Iowa. The top programs like Kansas, UNC have been coming in and getting the top recruits over the years. Those coaches have known about Iowa's talent and how well the Iowa kids are coached. With the Political season, Iowa football, and 3 Iowa basketball teams, Iowa is getting some big attention. Great for the state!

Just keep Iowa off the cover of SI, especially when we get into Mar.

Xavier falls too, so how about West Virginia, NC and Villanova going down? Then Maryland win in East Lansing and we would get another #1, but on the road this time. Probably won't happen, but obviously we should all be rooting hard for Sparty on Saturday.

Actually, its just Roy Williams, who has the state of Iowa to thank for a lot of his success over the years.

Though we got Steve Krafcisin (originally from Chicago though) from UNC much like we got Uthoff from Wisconsin early on... He was a good friend to hang out with as next door neighbors to him in the dorms way back when...
