Let’s see where our community is on this.

Personally I lean DeVries because I think he’s more equipped/experienced with the transfer portal and recruiting. The possibility of bringing Tucker with him for a year would be a bonus.

His brother being an Iowa legend doesn’t hurt either.
You think the Iowa job is so great he'd leave after 1 season? Not a snowballs chance in hell.

I think this is Tucker's 4th and final year. Played 3 years at Drake and this is his 4th overall w/ WV.

I hadn’t put that together that Jared was his brother! Nice.

I voted Ben M just because I am guessing that he’s the guy we end up with if Fran’s gone after this year……which is still definitely an IF.

That said Beth should first make a run at Devries but if it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen…..go all in after Ben M.

Take it for what it's worth I have a friend who's a friend of him when he was at Drake said his wife hates it in West Virginia
If you have ever been to WV it is definitely different. It tends to be a little desolate IMO. A very beautiful state (think of the movie Deliverance). But it makes Iowa/Midwest look like a metropolis. I thought when DeVries took that job he might be in for a surprise living there. But every state has their positives and negatives, and it depends on what you personally like/dislike.

I am going to guess Fran stays one more year because Jack will be redshirted at Butler. Then Fran will be done.

So I asked if he thought he'd leave after just signing he thought if Iowa asked him and offered him he thought he might take it

Mrs. DeVries seems like a pretty intelligent woman. And as we know, happy wife, happy life, so Iowa City might look pretty dang good to Coach DeVries about now. Beth should pull out all the stops. The worst that can happen is he says no.

But Ben McCollom would suit me just fine as well. After their win @ Southern Illinois today, Drake is 20-2, 10-2 in the MVC, and a good bet to be the league's rep in the NCAA Tourney. With Iowa sitting at home for the second straight year, I'll be following the Bulldogs, and hoping that Iowa will be hiring a former or current Drake coach to turn things around in Iowa City.

You call DeVries first to see if he’ll listen but definitely don’t expect him to say yes.
This.

There's nothing wrong with trying. But the fact is, like I said in a previous thread, Iowa missed the boat on a lot of the trendy names last year/going into this year, including DeVries.

I still think Goetz will ultimately give Fran one more year, so check back in 2026 after both DeVries and McCollum have had a 2nd year with their teams.

And to be honest, I dont think these are the end-all, be-all options for Iowa's next coach anyway.

Who and when we end up with could be a big surprise to everybody. I do know this. Whoever it is he won't be the right one.

No way should Fran be here next year: either he retires or is fired. This program is in the bottom of the well, and there's no excuse for leaving it there another season. None.
Normally I don't like seeing it get to this place where we have to run a guy, BUT, 1) Barta giving these coaches damn hear lifetime contracts was just stupid 2) IF the smoke that Dix and Freeman are both packing it in then this needs to be addressed NOW.....That would take us right back to those dark days of "you know who" where are top players left after every season....

McCollum’s body of work arguably makes him a top 3 coach in the country. 4 National titles plus he’s now taking 4 guys from D-2 to a 20-2 record? I’ve honestly never seen a yea play better defense game after game like his teams do.

This is why I voted McCollum. That and the Devries buyout factor.

I know it's DII, but 4 titles makes me think that the guy has got to be a pretty darn good coach. Reminds me of Bo Ryan, when Wisconsin hired him, he had only coached DIII and had won multiple titles at that level. Turned out pretty good for Wisconsin.

No guarantees it will be the same with McCollum, but short of a miracle hire of a proven D1 winner, I wouldn't mind a BM hire at all if we go the up and comer route.

Just the fact that there are rumors that Freeman and Dix are looking to move after the season - no matter how legit those rumors are - is all the reason I need to be done with Fran.

And that's not even touching on all the other reasons.

It’s pretty easy to discount a coach’s record at D2 and if that translates to D1.. understandable. But with the 20-2 start at D1, it provides some level of increased validation that his style at the D2 level will carry over to some degree. I suppose you could still argue he has no P4 coaching experience, which is true, although Drake beat all the P4 teams they have played, 3-0.

Also, his team at northwest Missouri state, well they suck now that he has left. Although that new coach was able to keep a good chunk of the roster. Coach Mac came into Drake with no support, no players, no coaches and has a 20-2 record to show for it.

Idk, seems like it would be a no brainer to bring him on.

Drake wins by 10 on the road, to go to 20-2 and they are the first team out of all D1 college basketball team to reach 20 wins. Stirtz with a career high 30 points.
It's highly unfortunate that the "committee" will look at computer metrics to determine whether this Drake team is worthy of being an NCAA Tournament team short of winning the Valley's auto bid.

Anyone watching that knows even a sliver about basketball should be able to tell this is one of the 68 best teams in CBB.

If Drake wins out and loses in the conference championship game,, I could see them getting an at large.. outside of that, yes, they will need the auto bid. Frankly, I don’t see any other teams wanting to play them in the NCAA tournament if they get there.

Honestly you can make some of the same statements about Devries to a degree. He did well at Drake but is in his first year at the P4 level, and is 13-7 and 4-5 in the conference as I type this. Too early to judge obviously, but do we know for certain that Devries is even necessarily the better choice of the two? I'm far from convinced.

It’s so ridiculous that a team could end up 28-4 or something like that and not make the tournament. And while some of their Power conference wins like Miami don’t look so great K St is seriously coming on and Vandy is a top 25 team.

To be fair to DeVries Tucker has been out after the first 10 games or so. That’s a big deal.

DeVries has the name and a better D1 pedigree at this juncture, he also appears to have a bigger network of supporters pushing for him. McCollum is a bit of dark horse pick. Whoever they choose, maybe it’s not either of them, we all just want the Fran era to end!!

Totally reminds me of Bo Ryan. And Bo didn’t get the chance forever either. If you can coach you can coach. Fran’s hunger is gone. He’s done.

Heck, some guys are playing 6-7 years! LOL

This may sound weird but the fact that DeVries has a lot more experience recruiting African Americans than McCollum does should be a factor.

I'm sure each coach has an agent & if they're interest in moving the agents have contacted Beth. A lot of behind-the-scenes activity takes place in these high-level coaching positions. The same for Freeman & Dix. They have agents these days of NIL. Agents are doing their due diligence & seeing what their players market value is. We are in the 4th quarter of the season & there will be a lot of portal movement come April. A good agent will have his coach/players in a negotiable position to get the best for their clientele.
