So now that Hoagie is off the table; does all of sorensons cut of scholly $$ go to Cass?

It's kinda getting sadly laughable how Iowa is swinging and missing this year....again, this year...

I realize last year was #1 class but then I woulda thought in state guys like Teske would been
Priority who would not take as much to get to Iowa...as persuasion...

I think it's more likely that some gets saved/dispersed through existing roster, to prep for 2019 class and more importantly a big 2020 class. Realistically you have to look who's coming off the books. This year only Sorensen + Laux. Next year only Stoll. So if people are expecting some monumental class in 2019, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. More likely similar to this year with 1-2 key recruits, maybe slightly more leeway with losing out on Hidlay, but this years class isn't finished yet. 2020 will be a monster class for us.

You want to give Teske a half or more scholarship when he does not project well at 33 and would not come close to beating Spencer at 25? If he would have come for less he would be here. Psu creative scholarships at work once more.

Why do u think brands is going to be so good. He is great on his feet but doesn't ride or turn many guys. He's good at getting out on bottom. I do believe he is the most improved wrestler every year I have seen him but has a lot to improve on to be AA guy

Well if i have a wrestler who has a great gas tank, can take the other person down repeatedly and can get out from the bottom i think he just might have a chance to win a lot of matches. Oh, then there is also the fact that he started late, is still improving each year and comes from an OK wrestling family.

I'm not saying brands isn't going to be good but everyone in college is good on there feet. Also he hasn't walk though state tournament

Just heard great things about him going with guys in the Iowa room. That combined with his pedigree has me feeling pretty optimistic.

No disrespect, but the fact is, not everyone in college is good on their feet. Maybe they were in high school, but once they get into college the cream rises to the top.

Brands is excellent on his feet, at least at the high school level and with what appears to be an endless motor. Will that translate into immediate success at the collegiate level? Time will tell, but as many have said here, he has limited amount of years in wrestling compared to his peers, so there is a great chance he has more room to improve than many.

Brands

His freshmen yr didn’t even qualify for state(4th @ districts).

Soph yr beats sr. Clint Lembeck in finals. Lembeck placed 5th or 6th this yr @ D3s

Junior yr beats Lara for the 3rd time that year in finals. Lara was going to ISU but recent switched to UNI.

I was hoping Brands would’ve wrestle at Fargo. To better gauge his progress against higher quality opponents. Never heard why he didn’t??

Things to work on and improve upon. Has a pretty good support group to make sure his participation is where it needs be. Plus Fargo is not only about the competition it’s about rankings, money and who wants you. None of which Nelson needed.

Wasn't he nursing a minor injury? I think I remember that being a factor after the end of last season.

Abdula Akhmedov (RUS), 60 kg Jr. World Champion, would be perfect if he can learn to get out from bottom. Terry, get to work on that.

Listen/watch the interviews of Nelson Brands. He started late, improves exponentially every year and has the same mentality of demoralizing his opponent like Terry did. I am looking forward to watching him in the black and gold.

Booing a HS kid is pretty crappy, thanks to his upbringing that crap doesnt phase him. The fact is they are still kids. Most don't have complete control of their emotions yet, wrestlers more than other sports I would say though. The only thing I am ok with booing is poor sportsmanship. Shouldn't even have to do that as good parents will take care of that the first time it happens.

Why did he get booed at the state tournament?

Lara had him on the ropes and Brands was backing up a little, turned the crowd against him.

He's going to be a really good wrestler for Iowa. His takedown records are deceiving though. He will get 8 takedowns in the first period when others in his position will get a first minute fall. I see him similar to Ramos coming in, aggressive on his feet, tons of fight and hard to ride, now I hope he uses that same whip over Ramos loved. People always thought it was kind of funny when he'd hit it on kids at the D1 level, but I always thought that being aggressive with the reshots was what made guys suspect to getting hit with it. Nelson is in the same mold.

Oops, yup. Yant is a crowd favorite anyway, that kid takes some risks. Anyway, Yant put Nelson on his heels, and the crowd's reaction carried over to Friday night.

I don't feel every many people where booing Nelson. I believe there booing the ref for not sending the match to over time. This does help my point I keep hearing that Iowa doesn't have a lot of D1 talent yet Nelson won one point match in semi and I believe 3 point match in finals. Yes he's great to watch and I do think he's good get for Iowa but I don't think set in AA guy. I will be more than happy to buy everyone on the board a beer if I'm wrong.

Hopefully, Brands enters an open or two this year as I feel he won’t get challenged much in the state.

Brands did Fargo last year and the Dvorak the last two years losing in the finals to Lewan and O'Connor. He also wrestled at a tourney in Vegas this past season and wasent he at national duals? So he does have national tourneys/competition under his belt.

Starting relatively late and having the pedigree he does, i think Brands ceiling is high.

Also, being great on his feet would be a welcome addition. Getting a lot of TDs is not exactly an area Iowa has excelled at in recent years.

I heard he gets tuition but no room and board at PSU. Not sure what it equates to as a percentage of scholarship. For an out of state student I believe that would be around 0.6 to 0.7. I believe Iowa offered a 0.5. Iowa's tuition is less especially for in state students so he probably would have comparable if not less out of pocket to Iowa.

My understanding of colleges that are fully funded is it doesn’t matter in-state vs out-state against 9.9.

.5 at PSU counts the same as .5 at Iowa regardless of cost of tuition

Not doubting your sources at all...could be totally correct. Believe he was offered less than half here and is getting additional funding at psu....take that however you want. Didn’t get this direct but from a pretty reliable and informed individual.

Don't think high school kids can enter opens. Also theres three time state champ that moved into nelson conference. Not sure if both guys will be at the same weight but it would be fun to watch

Is this pedigree thing real? As in, do sons of All-American wrestlers become All-Americans at a higher rate than the rest of D1 wrestlers?

They can. Gable Stevenson and Pat McKee will be wrestling at Daktronics in SDSU this weekend.

9.9 is 9.9. The difference with in or out of state factors in to out of pocket to the athlete. Cost to attend PSU out of state is 50,870 Iowa in state is 19,400 so getting .65 to PSU leaves him 17,805 while .4 from Iowa leaves him 11,640. You can get an in state kid paying X amount using less % of scholly than you can an out of state kid. A .1 offer from Iowa would have been the same as PSU at .65.

You are correct from the athletic team’s perspective; however, there can be drastic differences for the student athlete.
