So long, Fran

He’s not going anywhere
Having only 3 years left leaves him in lame duck status already. He’s one of the lowest paid coaches in the Big Ten. And there’s basically zero hope to sell tickets next year. I definitely feel Alford/Lick vibes around this right now. I don’t think he has much hope for being brought back.

From what I read on here from people who actually watch the games, Fran is checked out.

What are the pros and cons of firing him now instead of waiting for him to walk after the season?

There really isn't a downside to canning him now.... Maybe financially. So we won't do it, because we are a gutless administration.

Loss of players/recruits would be a con, but we are getting our a$$ kicked anyway.

The pro is that you signal to fans and boosters that you are actually invested the the future.

You get out ahead in the coaching search.

Let’s be honest. Fran’s teams are light years ahead of anything Lick ever put on the floor. Fran’s teams are similar to the ones Alford put on the floor. But light years ahead of anything Lick could do.

This Fran team featuring skinny, non-muscular wings f look physically overmatched like the Lickliter teams did. Sure, this Iowa team can score if their shooters are making shots, but even when they are making shots they are getting blown out because they can't protect rim or rebound or stay in front of their guys.

3-5 in B1G right now and 3 game losing streak. We are heading for around 7-13 in B1G, which isn't that far off from Lickliter level

It’s gotta be pretty embarrassing for Fran to go out like this. I have more respect for Lickliter for how his final team at least competed on the defensive end.

Last time I saw the pa rankings, , Fran was more like 9th in base salary in B1G. He's gotten longevity bonus/ and pretty easy performamce bonuses that also help bump him up. . He was making a few hundredK less per year than Matt Painter just a few years ago--- Matt Painter actually has brought home Big10 titles and Final4s.

Alford was able to sense he wasn't not going to get contract extensions and give him credit, he went out and found a job and didn't coach to get fired and a buyout.

I get the sense that more Fans are finally ready to move on from Fran. I don't get the sense that Fran wants to stay 3 more years, but he does want his 3 years of money. FRan is coaching like he wants to be fired and get his full buyout.

Fran is putting out lineups that can't defend or rebound---physically out classed. Then they have a coach that doesn't know defense. So they are not trained well and physically outmatched and result is a clown show. No wonder they look lazy/bewildered.

We had 6'5 Josh Dix on Garcia most of the game. Josh is a solid defender, but he's weak physically/skinny. He has always been low key guy, but he looks like he doesn't really want to be out there.

What I saw tonight on that basketball floor was a joke, and it wasn't the first time this season. I don't know how any program with a sliver of self-respect can allow this to go on any longer, especially with what's going on in Ames. IMO the Fran era should have ended after the Richmond fiasco; we'd be in Year 3 of a rebuild right now and maybe there'd be success, if not at least hope.

He won’t be back. How his exit is categorized is still uncertain, but he will be spending most of his time next winter in Indy watching Jack play.

As of 2022-23, before the Pac 12 expansion, Iowa coaching staff was 11th ($4.9 million for the staff) above only Minnesota. Nebraska and Northwestern not reported. Purdue was 10th. Not sure why Nebraska wasn’t reported but Hoiberg makes more than Fran by almost a million alone.

Of the new Pac 12 teams only Washington was lower than Iowa at $4.8 million. USC not reporting.
