So there is a debate tonight?

Refreshing to actually watch a debate without some a--hole moderator asking idiotic nonsensical questions.

Marco, Carly, Ted and The Donald hit it out of the park.
Please tell me where CF and Trump were good!

These guys don't understand any of this. Holy shit it is now socialism and the ohio gov just lost his mind. I'm not sure he understands what the FDIC does w a failed bank. Unfortunately i am not sure the FDIC would know how to handle a mega bank failure.
No politician would say it, but the large bank bailouts were profitable to the Treasury. A lot of the failed little banks cost the FDIC money but nothing major in the grand scheme of things.

Right...Paul was clearly the smartest guy up there tonight. Good grasp on everything.

No one, outside of Paul, seemed to understand the bank failure question.

Did anyone notice on the first commercial break that Rand Paul left his podium and headed for the moderator table before the camera cut away? Presumably he thought he was getting ignored in the first segment of the debate. If that's what he did... it seemed to work.

It made money but it still isn't a situation you want to be in. Having plans and procedures in place before another potential melt down would be ideal. Fact is we still probably don't have a good way to deal with a mega bank failure, maybe there isn't a good way to do it at all w their size.

Probably better to break them up before we get into another situation like 2008.

Ted Cruz is my new guy. He'll let the banks fail, put us back on the gold standard, and did he really say he'd impose a 16% tariff on imports? Awesome stuff.

Good to see Rand Paul back away from seeming to believe in climate change.

I love the way Carly wants to give weapons to everybody in sight. And, by God, if she talks to Putin the way she talks to the cameras, he'll be shaking in his boots.

Smart and didn't come across as an erratic candidate like the Ohio gov eventually ended up looking like.

All good observations. For the sake of the RNC... I hope the viewership wasn't very high because the immigration answers will cost them a LOT of votes. Jeebus... this is a dysfunctional group.

Totally thought Kasich was making a big, big effort to get noticed. Started strong but faded badly as the debate wore on. Really don't understand Cruz arguing with Kasich. Cruz has nothing to gain from a tactical standpoint with somebody polling lower than you are.

I wish they had asked a couple more candidates to comment on the no fly zone. The little debate we had on it with Bush and Paul and somebody else was pretty good.

All kidding aside, I find it tough to listen to them spout lefty positions from a few years ago. Just to pick one example, now they are all opposed to too big to fail.

I also love the way they blame too big to fail on Dodd-Frank. As if this problem didn't exist before the recession.

Why should I care about zero based budgets?
This is a big talking point for her. She has said it at least a couple of times in each of the last 2 debates and went on about it again in the after-debate interview with Cavuto. Not only is it boring but she has never made it clear what she means by it and what benefits it would produce. On the surface it sounds like a good idea, but it's just a shell of an idea the way she presents it.

They can but they don't know how are why. They are budgeting only in the numbers without any guide of overall strategic goals. Think about how our pols budget today, they get numbers of needed to keep current govt going and vote to approve or deny the whole thing. Zero based is much more time intensive but aligns strategic goals to the budget process vs just approving a number.
We are talking about rule by continuing resolution most of the time. If they can't even manage to develop a real budget, what chance does Carly have of getting them to do even more work?

Is it even something the President has any say over? I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some House member controls the way the budget is drawn up. House controls the money. Seems like something the chair of the budget committee would do and the whole thing seems hardly a main point for a lady who says she doesn't need plans because they won't survive the campaign anyway. It's like her 6th fleet comment I think, just something she says to sound intelligent.

Capital ratios have been increased on all to my knowledge, what is Jeb talking about.

I think the big banks should be broken up, i think caps should be put on hedging tools, and higher cap ratios will help.
Better policy, for sure, but almost a guarantee that we go back into recession as the money supply is constricted.

Maybe Jeb would be a good VP, he seems to know a lot of stuff but he is just so bad at articulating it. Trump called it on him early, low energy, but he was being nice bc really he is low energy and awkward.
Yeah, this may mark the end of Jeb. But I still remember Kerry looking equally out of it early on. So maybe not.

Nobody brought up Trumps comments about the TPP? That guys the best... What a clown.

Also when Cruz listed the 5 departments he'd get rid of did he list Commerce twice or did I imagine that?

If elections were won by who's the smartest and most informed guy in the room Paul should win in a landslide based on what we saw last night. He seemed much more confident as well and I liked the exchange with Rubio on millitary spending.

What I wish Paul (and all the candidates really) would talk about is how they would implement their tax plans. Simplifying the tax code is great in theory, but it would create chaos if we did a fundamental switch in one year. It leads me to believe they don't understand the impact of what their proposing.

Um, what sort of job does a philosophy major get?

So what can you do with a philosophy degree? You can become...
  • President of Morgan Stanley (Robert Greenhill)
  • Founder and Manager of a Hedge-fund (Don Brownstein)
  • Investor (George Soros)
  • CEO of Overstock.com (Patrick Byrne)
  • Supreme Court Justice (Stephen Breyer AND David Souter)
  • Mayor of Los Angeles (Richard Riordan)
  • US Secretary of Education (William Bennett)
  • Prime Minister of Canada (Paul Martin, Jr.)
  • Network Television Journalist (Stone Phillips)
  • Pulitzer-Prize Winning Author (Studs Terkel)
  • Host of an Iconic Game Show (Alex Trebek)
  • Co-founder of Wikipedia (Larry Sanger)
  • Comedian/Actor/Producer (Ricky Gervais)
  • Academy-Award Winning Filmmaker (Ethan Coen)
  • Four-star General in the US Army (Jack Keane)
  • Fighter in the French Resistance in WWII (Stephane Hessel)
  • Co-author of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (P.C. Chang AND Charles Malik)
  • Martyr to German Opposition to Nazism in WWII (Sophie Scholl)
  • Pope (John Paul II AND Benedict XVI)
  • Seminal Anthropologist (Claude Levi-Strauss)

I would think Supreme Court Justices would have to be law majors, wouldn't they?

Now the Pope makes sense.

A lot of them end up in law school. Skills in critical thinking make them good in a host of science careers, especially in research. I know several who became physicians and psychologists. Most med school applicants I see with philosophy degrees make a very good impression in the interview process. Also, they have the skills necessary in making a case for a particular objective which makes them good at fund raising and grant writing. A lot of MBAs I know had undergraduate degrees in philosophy. Teaching, social work...possessing a degree in philosophy can lead you to a whole host of well paying careers (I have a minor in philosophy & humanities, by the way).

How did they major in philosophy but got all of their prerequisites for med school? 5 or 6 years of undergrad?

minors in biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, etc.

Ok, I thought that may be it. I got mine in exercise science but was short a microbiology and developmental psych class after graduation. Decided to take them to leave the door open for PA school.

If someone with a philosophy degree has to go on and get a masters degree in a different field to get a job, then that's not really the same thing as "here's what a philosophy major" makes.

PA is a good career. There is definitely a need for them.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. My mom and sister (both RNs) pushed me towards it. Fortunately I found a career that is pretty good, however I will keep it in mind.

Well, they've done it in the past. Use your Google skills on Continental Illinois and Washington Mutual.

Yeah, Jeb may have some skills. Unfortunately for him debating and campaigning are not high on the list.

You left out the most important of all: Cooler, Dalton. Go to 1`:12 in clip

But, not everybody goes into a career with the idea of how much money they will make. Many occupations "pay" in forms other than in dollars.

That's true. So maybe the better way to put it would have been "rewarding" careers instead of "high-paying".
