Songs that epitomize rock and roll

One song...that's gonna be tough.

Hound Dog/Elvis or Johnny B Goode/Chuck Berry I've always considered to be the beginning of rock and roll, at least where it truly where it exploded globally.

If we're going at this "clinically"...meaning, OK Mr. Alien, this is Rock and Roll - I'd say show 'em Hound Dog from the Ed Sullivan Show...cause that's as iconic an example of the genre as anything else I can think of.

FYI I'm not really an Elvis fan at all. If it were up to me I'd probably show them this from Jimi Hendrix' Monterrey Pop.

IF RocknRoll started in the1950's, then it would need
to be someone from that era. Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley,
Jerry Lee Lewis all had songs that defined early RnR

-Over the Hills and Far Away ... multiple performers
-House of the Rising Sun
-Night Moves
-American Pie
-Immigrant Song
-Nights in White Satin
-Bohemian Rhapsody
-Purple Rain
-Hotel California

For me American Pie provides a good summary of the 1960s.

However, as an introduction to Rock and Roll, I'd almost have to go with Johnny B Good.

Another one I thought of that's kind of outside the box is Garden Party by Rick Nelson. Not quintessential rock and roll per se, but an interesting take on a musician's mindset.

Interesting....a lot of songs named here that I loved, but would never call rock 'n' roll, let alone the epitome of it.

Here's one candidate.

Hard driving guitar, great drum work keeping time, and the lyrics pretty much define the attitude of rock & roll.
