Spencer

Whoops. Born March 1998. Won his first title March 2018. My bad. You genius' know what I meant.
Turns 20 the SAME YEAR he wins his first title. Not first class year. Mature Freshman.
Potato Potatto.
I turned 19 in November of my freshman year at Iowa, and I turned 20 during my sophomore year. The majority of my classmates were this age as well. I was never held back or anything. This is the normal age for a college sophomore to turn

I started my freshman year of college a week after I turned 18. Had my associate degree before I turned 20. It all boils down to when your birthday is and whether you start school at 5 or 6. I started school 2 weeks after I turned 5. Never had any problems being really young for my class, but I was probably at a big disadvantage over the kids that were a year and half older than me in the same grade. Nobody said life was going to be fair and starting kids older for athletic advantages is really the normal anymore. Spencer seems to be the norm as far as age for atheletes any more, not the exception imo.

Lol. Not gonna give up when shown to be objectively wrong.
Yup, he's in deep and too defensive now. Made a dumb comment that Spencer was 20 and a man amongst boys compared to typical freshman. Turns out he turned 19 his freshman year, just like most freshman, and he doubles down. Not to mention most freshman redshirt, and are 20 for their first actual season of starting, so 20 as a true freshman would be equivalent to most redshirt freshman age wise.

My son turned 18 a couple weeks after Freshman year started. My daughter turned 19 about six weeks after her Freshman year started. You are correct that there can be a year difference in age among students in the same class without anyone being held back.

This sub-topic within the thread, however, comes from a claim that Spencer is somehow abnormally old for his age - something you do see a lot of in college due to kids being held back. This does not apply to Spencer: he started school at his appropriate age, started high school at his appropriate age, started college at this appropriate age, and won a NC as a true Freshman who was never held back.

Oh ok, I don't use glasses, so it seemed odd to me. Thank you for clearing that up for me.
You don't think people read things at a wrestling tournament?? I mean when is the last time someone looked at a printed bracket or trackwrestling on their phone at a wrestling tournament??
Don't try to act like this innocent little angel who isn't trying to stir crap up.

When I'm at tourneys, or duals, I don't look at my phone.

Sorry I offended the people that look at their phones during the best session of the year.

You Ped staters just can't help yourselves can you?
I've said it before but apparently, the lack of self control is a PA thing.

PSU lurkers get a little stiffy and sadly, find themselves posting on HR for gratification.

Other PSU fans lurk, smirk & smile, a little embarrassed but oddly, enjoying the exchange.

They all reconvene on BWI like young children and laugh at what they've just done. It's annoying but clearly who "they are".

JMO or more aptly my perception...

Spencer admitted he wasn’t healthy but won’t say what. Doesn’t want to take credit away from Ramos. Hasn’t wrestled since which is interesting. Hope he gets right, deserves to be healthy for once.
I think it's just as simple as a guy trying to rush back from double ACL surgery on top of previous ACL surgeries and he just isn't healthy.

He also touched on not being able to run and condition properly. This affects food intake. He hasn't been able to practice since the season ended and limited ability to practice has likely been a theme for quite a while. The injury issues and surgeries chipped away here and chipped away there taking pieces of his game away. He gave all he could but there wasn't as much to give as there once was. I really hope a close to normal level of health can be achieved again.

Parts of that were really tough to watch. It almost sounds like he’s looking forward to freestyle to get away from the spotlight that came with college wrestling.
To be fair folkstyle with weekly weigh ins isn't very healthy for you at least that is my opinion. Frankly I think a lot of these guys look transformed after they transition to freestyle because they are able to build and not breakdown their body so much.

I think the pressure will alleviate a bit by not having the consistent competition. Although a lot of that pressure is internal. Spencer set lofty goals and high standards on himself it is why he is so good but it can be a bit of a curse of you can't appreciate the work you have done. Honestly I think there have been times where he has wanted to "put on a show" instead of just getting the win. If he won by a major it wasn't good enough. It's a lot of pressure when everyone expects a tech or a pin every single match.

I think the interview says a lot about Spencer’s character. Many guys in his position would be on media blackout for months. Many wouldn’t take the questions head-on like he did. And of course, many would be leading with excuses rather than just graciously giving credit to the guy who beat them.

I’m sure our PSU brethren would have loved to have seen any of the above, and I’m sure that they’re at least a little disappointed that he took the high road like he did. Of course, they’re elated that he lost, because they can now pretend that he isn’t as good as they know he is.

The segment about Cathy was pretty powerful and highlights what a garbage network ESPN is. Rather than focus on the Ramos family, they had to have a close-up on Cathy to broadcast her pain to the wrestling world and provide fodder for countless PSU fans and other fools to take cheap shots on social media. Spencer was exactly right — it was Matt’s moment, and he and his family deserved the attention.

As if Spencer hasn’t given us enough reasons to appreciate him (and annoy PSU fans), he gave us more in this interview. Looking forward to seeing him get as healthy as possible and destroy 57 kg.

I'm a Pa guy and Spencer Lee was the best wrestler I personally ever saw in High School. Desanto was from my district and I was so happy for him in his rise to state champ, but my heart broke for Spencer. To be so good and have the unfortunate situation where your body just doesn't allow you to be all that you could be is so tough. To battle in the state championships shortly after experiencing his first ACL tear was incomprehensible to me as I know what that is all about. Years ago I was 2 pounds away from an American bench press record for my age group. Two weeks before the championships I had a catastrophic accident tearing all the rotator tendons, dislocating the the shoulder, tearing the labrum and a few ligaments as well as the bicep. After major reconstructive surgery I got back into competition but was only a shadow of my former self. When Spencer lost at NCAA's I felt gut punched. To see an athlete with all those gifts overcoming all those setbacks go out like that and falling short of his goal of 4X was heart wrenching, not only for Iowa fans but all those who know what is feels like to be so close and yet fall short. I wish Spencer all the best in his future endeavors. This is a young man who has felt the burden because of his talent all the expectations in the world from wrestling fans. His recent interview highlighted how hard the mental part of all this has been on him on top of not quite reaching his goals. I know there is much greatness ahead for this young man.

Outstanding post. PSU trolls, this is how you show class and respect. Read and learn.

Did Spencer even get a match in the first round/quarters? Can't seem to find any early results/brackets.

Also, good on DeSanto to take down Gross. Gross is up and down, and DeSanto may be on a mission from God.

I think he had a 24 second TF and 53 second TF in his two matches

I’m all confused too.

So, the only weights for Senior Men’s freestyle that will be contested at the World Team Trials is 61KG and 125KG.

I kind of agree with Chael. The idea of Final X is stupid. Give the former world team members and medalists an automatic berth into the WTT, but make them have to wrestle in the WTT.

Edit to add: 92KG will be contested at the WTT too, since Cox moved up a weight.
