Spring it is..

As an OSU fan I could see 10 players that will skip the spring season and get ready for the NFL Draft. I would think underclassmen will have to make a decision: Do I play both spring and fall in 2021 or just choose to play one to save wear and tear. It will be interesting if OSU explores other options to play in the fall if it is legally possible. Of course if COVID-19 is still going strong all of this doesn't matter.

If my team had the depth of athletes that OSU has I wouldn’t spend much time worrying about how often they’d have to play... I might welcome a chance to further leverage a big advantage over many other programs.

Spring will not happen. This is just an attempt to keep anyone from bolting. If the SEC and any other conference play in the fall this decision will be catastrophic for the Big. Look for defections and transfers along with recruiting hurdles. The only thing saving this is if everyone else cancels..

Actually there are two things that save this. Your scenario where everyone else cancels before the season. And another scenario where the SEC and ACC don't, but then have to shut down the season a few games in because of widespread infections of players. That would be far worse for those conferences than it would be for the Big Ten to not play while others do play. These are young adults that are not professionals. You can't sequester them like the NHL and NBA are trying to do. They have to go to class. They aren't married, so will go out at night chasing tail. They aren't millionaires with everything handed to them, so they will have to go out shopping. They don't have their own workout facilities, so they will have to use the team equipment. Look at the St. Louis Cardinals, they are professionals that know better, yet many decided to go to a casino and they have now barely played any games while most of the league is 1/4 of the way through the schedule. Once one player gets it, the dominos will start falling and taking out a large portion of the team.

Big 10 buckled to the political pressure. So kids can be on campus, go to parties, and all that, but they are safe. We can go on airplanes with a hundred other people. Restaurants can have people in them, but we can't have kids who get tested once a week, are on a nutrition plan, and have way more access to medical professionals than most of us, aren't safe to play football??? This is the dumbest sh** ever. So many people depend on football for a living, and they are all screwed now because of the political climate and fear of liability lawyers. Awesome.

If you're a parent of a college football player would you have some concerns about playing 20 games in a 9 month period. Medical concerns dictated this move. Shouldn't we be concerned about subjecting 18-21 year old kids to this type of schedule.

Just because you can go on an airplane or eat at a restaurant doesn't mean you should. Campus will have limited gathering sizes and face masks required. Can't really stop the parties unfortunately.

Yes, but that's a better problem to solve than the current conditions.

This is pretty accurate. It’s all become political and fear of being sued down the road . Sad part is the parents of those athletes wanting to play would probably be some of the first to sue the conference if their kid develops health problems

then expect the players to return and do it again in the fall? Total mess.

You're right it is a total mess. 2020 is a total mess but I'm trying to be optimistic. They could potentially push back the start of football in the fall and start in November of 2021 and then bring it back to September in 2022?

If these guess have underlying health conditions, then they shouldn't play. But healthy athletes who are frequently tested and would be treated immediately have nothing to fear. This is a political play, and like so many of the other political plays this year, it has a HUGE downstream effect on people's lives. But hey as long as you can go to Walmart, it's cool. Who cares about all the small businesses this decision screws.

Starting football in November won’t work in northern states.

yes which is why my first post in this thread is quoted above.... I don’t think it is a good idea but IF IT DOES HAPPEN, Ohio state is in a relatively better place due to depth.

Why? Weather? Football can be played in snow or at neutral sites further south if need be.

Obviously the most likely outcome is that there is no football in the spring- but there are plenty of ways to address things. Seasons and dates are not set in stone.

I would love to go to Pasadena in July
Enjoy the win on the plane ride back. Fall practice starts in 3 weeks. Seriously, I could see a condensed spring football schedule, maybe just play your divisional opponents, 6 games, and the conference championship. Wrap it up by mid-May. Give the kids some time to recover before training camp starts again.

Exactly think of all the players who have surgery, rehab or miss spring ball recovering from issues that happened last fall. It is ignorant to think and expect players to come back 12 weeks or less. But then again I think spring ball is a farce.
