Why do you say that. I'm not in state, so I've not seen Max wrestle this year. Not surprised in the least.

Max was up 5-0 early I heard. What happened? Got caught? Not surprised in the least.
No, definitely did not get caught. Taken down, turned 2-3 times (pinned once).Max was up 5-0 early I heard. What happened? Got caught?
I'd say from the position he was in when he got taken down, that he got caught because Magayna put himself in that position and got driven back by the bigger-bodied wrestler. No, definitely did not get caught. Taken down, turned 2-3 times (pinned once).
That was my thought as well. Worked hard on top for two periods but didn't put enough points on the board in doing so. Probably hasn't been pushed too often this year and had nothing in the tank in the 3rd period. He was gassed
Yep, he looked gassed in the middle of the second, and yes, definitely got caught...no question about that. And because he was so gassed it just wasn't happening. He was gassed
My thoughts exactly. He had absolutely nothing in the 3rd period. That was my thought as well. Worked hard on top for two periods but didn't put enough points on the board in doing so. Probably hasn't been pushed too often this year and had nothing in the tank in the 3rd period.

Why not? Enlighten us.
I think you can look at what he’s done in other formats besides just high school divisional wrestling and his successes outside of that. I guess I’m asking where do think he’s lacking. I have my opinions, but I would never say I’m not at the LEAST surprised that he lost. I am surprised.Because though he’s a good Iowa high school wrestler the level of competition increased significantly for him this year when daddy moved him from 1A to 3A.
At the end of the day he might be better for it but the level of competition is a big factor in his accolades.
100%. He'd have 1 title in 3A if he wrestled in that Classification all four years. He's not beating Riggins or Rathjen his freshman year, and not beating Riggins his sophomore year. I'll give him the 3A title last year but that's it.Because though he’s a good Iowa high school wrestler the level of competition increased significantly for him this year when daddy moved him from 1A to 3A.

He was up 5-0 before running out of gas. I think his tank had more to do with his loss than the level of competition. Just my take…Because though he’s a good Iowa high school wrestler the level of competition increased significantly for him this year when daddy moved him from 1A to 3A.

He won the first 5 minutes but unfortunately the match is 6.He was up 5-0 before running out of gas. I think his tank had more to do with his loss than the level of competition. Just my take…

Take a look at his Trackwrestling profile, it's a must read. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Daddy took the liberty to completely document all of Max's accomplishments not the kid himself. Living vicariously through your boy much?
I will sleep so much better tonight knowing the average match time for all his pins. LolTake a look at his Trackwrestling profile, it's a must read. Apparently they don't like the kid's dad.Man, tough crowd tonight. Everybody on the pile!!!
Funny stuff. His success outside of HS is pretty limited. He’s heading to NDSU for a reason.
This has been a well known thing since he was a little kid.
When he committed to NDSU. It was covered here in another thread. I believe he’s enrolling in a trade program at NDSU which offers business classes in the curriculum, which should help if he wants to become an entrepreneur. His success outside of HS is pretty limited. He’s heading to NDSU for a reason.

I think he got 5th or 6th at Super 32 before last season.First off congrats to Asa Hemsted on an amazing tourney run so far. Knocking off a 3x champ and last years runner up. I’m rooting for you tomorrow night.
Taking nothing away from Maganya because he certainly has had an impressive youth and high school career record in the state of Iowa. But I’m not surprised either on a loss in 3a. Don’t know if it’s all the dad or dad and son but in my opinion they have been fairly careful and selective on where they wrestle school and tournaments wise.Majority of his accomplishments have come in the state of Iowa or very near Iowa over the years. Doesn’t ever truly test his abilities to often against the best in the big tourneys like Tulsa, Fargo, etc. Not sure dad could handle the possibility of him and his boy not being the center of attention. And I fully agree had he been 3a every year he is a 1 time champ at most.
I also wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if dad has him default out of the rest of the tourney.
There was nothing special about 3A this year. That kid was not bigger than him, and max is ranked 12 in the country at 165, so he could have cut to 165 if he thought 175 was a problem. He was dominating his way through the tourney, and was dominating this kid for 2 periods. He got sloppy with a double leg, basically sat in front of him, and got run over to his back. Can’t believe he didn’t get pinned. Fighting the pinning attempts seemed to drain what gas he had left. I’ve never seen him turned so easily more than once with a simple half. Other than when Willie Gadson was coaching wrestling, east high has always been a place where very good middle school athletes went to die. Not a school that promotes a disciplined lifestyle, and that ruined many a good athlete in many sports there. He should have finished up at Columbus.First off congrats to Asa Hemsted on an amazing tourney run so far. Knocking off a 3x champ and last years runner up. I’m rooting for you tomorrow night.

I had to go back and look but he finished 7th. So very respectable. But prior to that didn’t appear he wrestled that tourney before.I think he got 5th or 6th at Super 32 before last season.
I have no info, but hopefully he will be Hawk. He has to be a candidate for best wrestler in the state.Where will the fort dodge kid end up?
I guess. Dont know what the kid did wrong for all the snark or going to NDSU for that matter. Franek and Caliendo seemed worthy for our ‘dead’ Iowa program. Irony abounds.Apparently they don't like the kid's dad.
Wrestling heads/dads can be petty/bitter/snarky/catty like that lol.
It's serious business, wrestling.
Especially on the traveling tournament scene.
My advice is don’t read message boardsDaniel Magayna
Let me say Max has a state title in every grade except Kindergarten and now 12th. Every year we would find out his opponent. I or we would study them, their strengths and weaknesses. Then develope a game plan and execute it. This formula worked.
This yr was different. He started resisting the information. He for some reason had it in his head from someone, that it didn't matter who he wrestled or what that guy does. He was going to just go out Nd wrestle his way. When he said in an interview that he doesn't care about the kids rank or what he is about, I knew something was up. That is an unprepared robot mindset. That is a weak mindset and completely out dated cowards mindset. I faught professionally and competed enough to know that's the mindset of someone who needs courage and can't handle preasure. We live in 2024 and I have heard coaches throughout the years say that and some kids need to hear that because they are already mentally and physically tapped.
A football team doesn't go into a game without watching film and preparing. No ufc champion in the modern Era, just goes into the cage without knowing who and what they are about to face. No athlete at the highest level doesn't know thier opponent. The mistake is in thinking that if you know your opponents strength that you will worry about them. Not if myself or other good coaches are training you. Instead you will learn to see it as an advantage and you will embrace those challenges. It's to easy to say you don't care about who you wrestle.
not caring who and what the competition does, means you don't have to spend the time and energy preparing for them. That mistake takes away a huge advantage you could have techniqually as well as mentally if done correctly.
through the years we would chase loses. That meant if max lost close matches. We studied the guy. trained to defeat that guy. Still did normal practice and skill development, but we did the extra to chase that loss. Then we would find that guy and as many times as it took he would eventually defeat that guy.
One day he told me, " Dad I can beat anybody I want, Can't I." Yes, if you train for them you can.
He waited till his last warm upnto even consider what that guy does and prepared very little for him. Instead of 3 or more sessions and partners working with max to defeat his coming opponent, he just touched on what he would see and do. It was not enough.
it's over now and that can never change and life moves on. Every kid is different and what they need to be prepared, to be the best version of themself is different. treat every athlete different. As a coach we have to do more work and not take the easy way by thinking they all can just be motivated and prepared the same.
I failed my son by not instilling in him the understanding that he is different and he is better because he does what many do not. I failed to teach him that most kids do not prepare because they did not have a coach like his dad to teach them to appreciate and embrace the tough challenges. Most kids can not handle the level of infor.ation and complexity of not just training to be better but add in the element of training for individuals on top of it, all while looking to defeat the toughest competition they could find. I am sorry son. I should not have just assumed you understood we did what others could not handle doing. Mentally he was ahead of the game.
The way we prepared for him to compete was developed over years of tough losses and facing the fears that are in front of us. I was in a lot of fights S a young adult. I learned early that if you don't fight the biggest baddest dude first. you would fight him last. If you wanted to only have to fight once, you picked that guy first. I discovered you can eliminate or contain fear if you have a game plan. focus on the plan and not the fear and you develope a confidence that others can not. They think your worried about someone or something because you are obsessing about it. Nope My ADHD brain obsessed about it till I was convinced I knew it and every angle. Like anything else you must train your brain to see things differently. I won't say that the fear is completely taken away but I also thing a little fear hightens your senses. like hunting prey you will have some adrenaline and that's a good thing of you harness it to use and not let it overtake you.
Thanks to all the coaches and people that have ever touch or Been a part of mine and My sons life. I appreciate everyone of you for the little and the big things. I can't thank you enough. I can never repay some of the kindness and generosity some have shown us. As for our haters out there, we'll have a good day, I got healthy happy kids and a grandbaby I love. I got a great family so hate all you want but sun still going to shine.
Time to shine BabyMax!
ps I will proof read this later. you can figure it out. I never cared much for writing skillz. I had trees to climb
as a parent I should mention yes I am still disappointed in my son. Not for losing,. I am disappointed that he didn't follow the formula that got him 32 state and 65 national titles though his career. along with 182 wins with 150 pins with average 64 seconds per pin and only 4 loses in High school and we chased them. I am disappointed that he like almost every teenager does, he wanted to do it his way and not do what his dad told him to do. That's teenagers for you. still love my Babymax and his brothers Ike and Maddox
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

Glad he was able to get that off his chest. Hope it helps him have many more restful nights. My advice is don’t read message boards
That was a tough read from his dad. I could reference 5-6 different things that make me shake my head but I won't. I will just say Yikes. My advice is don’t read message boards
I thought the same thing. Makes me wonder if he truly got to experience being a kid. That was a tough read from his dad. I could reference 5-6 different things that make me shake my head but I won't. I will just say Yikes.
Keep your head up Max! The best part about becoming an adult is you get to make your own choices and live your own life. You're almost there kid!
Actually I think he was toast after about the first 3:45. He gassed early. He won the first 5 minutes but unfortunately the match is 6.
We have 2 starters from NDSU….what does that say about us if I’m following your logic? His success outside of HS is pretty limited. He’s heading to NDSU for a reason.
