Stratton passing playbook likely limited

I think one consideration regarding playcalling is that the list of passing plays they feel Stratton is capable of safely running may be much smaller than casual fans expect. It’s not just knowing the play, you need to have maybe 20+ empty reps and 20+ reps against live defense to really get the timing and reads down. He may know 50 passing play calls, but only 25 of them does he have enough reps with. That can really limit Lester’s playbook.

If he’d been running 2nd team QB this would be a lot different, but he wasn’t. I think he was doing scout team and wasn’t even doing game prep until a few weeks ago, and practice time is limited each week. He may not have been getting much live reps with Iowas playbook basically.

The running game likely isn’t as limited as the handoffs and footwork are much more similar across different types of run plays.

Real life coaches can comment perhaps.

And for the most part I dont think they want him throwing over the middle much. And when he does the passes are lower so maybe the coaches want them low to keep from the tip drill.

But it doesnt make much reps to throw a bomb, call the bomb, fling it, thats it,

I wonder how far he can throw from just standing in the pocket?

Yup. Looks like they don't let him throw much. So far, he hasn't had to.

100% a shortened playbook.

Throwing a bomb isn't nearly that easy. First, you usually want to be facing man coverage. Then you need a QB with the experience to look the safety off. Then you need the time to execute the look-off and throw. You need the time for the route to develop. You need receivers that can get separation. You need receivers that are able to fight for the ball down field. You need appropriate time, score, down and distance, and field position. You need appropriate wind conditions. And yes, your QB needs to know the play. Iowa has several shot plays in their offense that utilize different deep routes. QB throws the wrong route and it could end up an interception. Long developing routes also lend more likelihood to sacks and strip sacks.

Video games can be fun though

Perfect conditions and game to ensure 100% ball security, particularly with a new qb. we won on the back of no turnovers. So regardless of stratton’s familiarity with plays, kirk had the right idea. a more freewheeling qb wouldve lost the game, luckily for us he didn’t play

Stratton throws a good ball. It’d be interesting to see what he could do with the shackles off.

I’d like to see Sullivan and Stratton alternate series in the bowl game. Won’t happen but one can hope 😁

Can’t run okay action from the gun. Maybe he’s not a drop back qb? This said they went under center later in the game and tried with some success.

Stratton's arm strength is limited. He has to get his whole body into it, which if he passes too much is a good telegraph.

I’d like to see if Stratton has much mobility. I know he’s no Sullivan, but he has described himself as “pocket mobile.” With virtually no backups behind him, the coaching staff wisely kept him from running much, but I’d like to see what he can do.
