Well sure. All kinds of reasons for leaving a place...won't make the lineup, do not like the staff or atmosphere, does not like the university for some reason. It's why I don't think the B1G should go further in their punishment for it than the NCAA. If Suriano were to transfer to Rutgers, he should not lose a year. Cortez shouldn't have lost a year going to PSU. If you are a young person making a decision based on limited information plus the university and staff giving it's best "face" or maybe even promises that do not pan out, young men and women should not be punished if things change.
Agree with this 100%. If Nick Suriano is unhappy at PSU - not saying he is - I don't see why the B1G has to go further than the NCAA in making this hard on him. Especially in wrestling - his options are limited.
I haven't made any comments here or on BWI about the situation because I know absolutely nothing, but have seen the Suriano's at events since Nick was in elementary. They are about as Jersey as they come - don't mean that in a bad way, I'm an Italian who lives on the border lol - and RU might have been the best choice from him from the start. I could definitely see him being homesick in a place like PSU. Or Iowa, for that matter.
My totally uneducated guess is that they were greatly considering future wrestling success when it came down to PSU and Iowa, and now that they are confident he can win a NC with a season under their belt, they know HE can do it at a place that is not quite PSU or Iowa. So why not explore the place he would be more comfortable at. RU - urban campus, NYC close, north jersey feel all the way. I know - I went there. Posters who conjecture this has anything to do with wrestling style I would also give a big uneducated bahaaaaahaaaahaaaa to. I would wager this has much more to do with the college experience than the college wrestling room. Could also be money, as I'm sure RU would ante up a full. Positive on that.
Even as a PSU fan, there is no way the B1G should interject themselves into this. But it is what it is and I am highly doubtful this will come to bear. He will still need a waiver (not a release) to get his 3rd year back. And barring a family situation, not sure what they can come up with to qualify. I'm also not surprised that this has been leaked, knowing the RU staff (which I do). So much of the rumor has probably been slanted that way, and I also wouldn't be surprised if it was dead in the water, that they would still be chumming. Plus, Pritzlaff is a good coach who kids really like. I could definitely see a Jersey kid wanting to come home and wrestle for him.
At the end of the day though, plenty of kids want to leave after their first year at college. Some do, but many don't and magically the second year is a TON better (talking about kids in general, not just athletes).
