SWARM CEO Brad Heinrichs Interview. 20% of SWARM Beer SALES & 25% of Vodka SALES goes to SWARM. Says they need 10,000+ paying members; they're @ 1,800

$55 a case is crazy. They really messed up on the price point for a light beer.
for what is referred to ass tall boys actually its a fairly reasonable price considering they are giving 20% of the sales to the swarm
thats $11 per case going to the swarm, that leaves the ones selling that beer $44 per case which 24 cans divided into $44 is $1.83 per can now the seller is entitled to make some money just for selling the beer.

its been a long time since I bought any Beer, but that is a extremely low price even if it is just for a case of 12 ounce cans.

since I am unable to go shopping I will ask my wife to price a couple of different cases to see what their cases are costing to compare price because its now got me curious.

From my understanding of beer distribution, there are 3 mark ups.

* Exile Brewing sells to distributors (at a mark up); SWARM gets 20% of these sales

* Distributors sell to retail stores (at a mark up)

* Retail Stores sell to their customers (at a mark up)
It looks like those are tall boys at $9.99 a 6 pack. That’s plenty reasonable for a craft beer.
It’s not the same at every location.

Yeah, its a light beer. I had a few the other night and enjoyed them. I’m sure what they were going for is a beer that you can drink a ton of at tailgates, 4th of July weekend, etc. as that makes more money for the Swarm. An IPA where you drink one per sitting isn’t going to generate as much money. I think they hit it out of the park really in matching what they were going for.
Exactly and smart frankly. I like it. Not heavy. Can consume more. Waiting on that Vodka now!!

I agree with this, though I was a bit surprised they didn’t go with a lager. That would seem to be more in tune with a tailgate and stadium volume beer. That being said, Swarm is a very good light ale that should be popular at Kinnick.

I imagine that if Swarm Golden Ale can become broadly popular, they can come back and build on the brand with Swarm Amber or a Swarm IPA for those with a more specific taste.

it's going to be interesting to see how this all evolves; Exile can barely keep up with demand right now

not sure who's producing the vodka; that comes out by the end of the month

makes you wonder how much money this will raise annually

great point; and SWARM vodka is coming soon!

also, people keep asking if SWARM beer will ever be found at Hy-Vees in the 7 other states outside Iowa. Imagine if that happens. I know posters like @kceasthawk would buy it in KC and @skydog0784 would buy it in MPLS/St Paul.
Hell yes! Besides supporting the swarm, it would be a great addition to my beer can collection! I have a pretty large collection including foreign cans and a couple dozen original cone tops from the 20's I have some BlackHawk cone tops from the old Davenport brewery that are in pretty nice condition.

do you hammer a hole into the bottom and drain the can? that used to be the way people did it IIRC....or maybe you don't even open them?

Lol... No, not those. Those are the cans that had the pop tops you used to pull off. The cone tops looked like old Heat cans if you remember those before they went into plastic bottles. They had a cap like a bottle. Not sure if they were twist off or used a church key. The ones I have the beer was already out of them. I used to send away to the brewerys when I was a kid trying to get them to send me cans as well. Lonestar in Texas sent a package with three cans. One was a really cool red and gold can called Brut beer. Well the kicker is they never actually released Brut beer, nationally anyway, so the cans worth several hundred dollars...

We need more creative names. Like Bone Crushing Stout and such.

Or Swarm Full Back Dive Pilsner

30 grand won't even get IA in the door, it will take at least $300,000 to get these players to listen, then when it gets to 1/2 a mill they will shut the door.

remember Bama paid Proctor $2,600,000 ti flip from IA . 30 g's is not even a drop in the bucket compared to the big money programs,

like what they are doing but they are going to need help and a lot of it. they need a few donator to give $5,000,000 all at once. and the more like this to really make it close.

30 grand in one month is great if you ask me. $360k a year. I would expect the initial buzz spikes that some, but their distribution probably isn’t near 100% either. That’s without having to hit up a single donor.

up until the swarm liquer reaches 2,000,000 per year the single donors are going to be the main source of money for the swarm.

Once distribution expands they will raise a decent amount more per month. They are doing damn good already for where it's at right now. Exile will make the beer that sells the most. I would guess they would not brew another rotational beer or two to make more Swarm if the demand keeps growing and distribution expands. They won't sell more of it than they do in des Moines, Iowa city, cedar rapids etc though so it will be interesting to see how things Play out.

Well, yes, but the idea is to take the pressure off of the donors with some renewable income. I don’t get how you can be disappointed with this news. Did you expect them to pull in 5 million a year on booze sales?

When they first launched this, they said if it’s as popular as Ruthie it would mean hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Swarm. I guess I don’t know what everyone’s expectations were, but this seems already like a home run.
