Teacher fired after DeSantis says bookshelf video was 'fake narrative'

A Florida teacher was fired this week after posting a video of empty bookshelves that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) called "a fake narrative" at a time when teachers in the state are removing or covering books in public schools to comply with new state laws.

Brian Covey, a substitute teacher at Mandarin Middle School in Jacksonville, posted a video to Twitter last month showing rows of empty bookshelves at the school's library. Covey is one of several teachers in Duval and Manatee counties who've posted photos or videos in recent weeks showing how school districts are responding to new Florida laws regarding books and materials available to children in classrooms and libraries. Duval County Public Schools, the district for Mandarin Middle School, urged educators last month to follow the new laws and "err on the side of caution" to determine whether a book "is developmentally appropriate for student use."

"They removed every single book from my children's classrooms …" he wrote on Jan. 27. "I read books about the consequences of this when I was in school …"

When DeSantis was asked about the empty bookshelves in the viral video at a news conference on Tuesday, the governor denounced it as misinformation.

"That video, that was a fake narrative, that was not true," the governor told reporters, adding that the school "hadn't even put out the books to begin with." "What they're trying to do is they're trying to act like somehow we don't want books."

On Thursday, Covey said he was informed by Duval County Public Schools, the district for Mandarin Middle School, that he had been fired. Covey told The Washington Post that he received a 45-second phone call from Education Staffing Solution (ESS), the organization the district contracts to hire substitute teachers, telling him that his services were no longer needed after he was told he "had violated their cellphone and social media policy."

"I was never told not to take any videos in the library," said Covey, 39, of Jacksonville. "I had no communication from the district or anything about what I was doing until DeSantis was asked the question and he kind of blew it up."

The School Superintendent also stated that this was not accurate.
For purposes of clarification and accuracy this person was a substitute teacher and not full time. He is reportedly a person who is politically active.
FYI this is in my town and not very far from where I live. Interestingly video shown of other schools does not show “empty shelves”.

Always an excuse

From what I read, that bookshelf was full until very recently.
When it was emptied and the media was notified.
Dr. Green, the SOS for DCPS has indicated that this is not a district wide thing. The substitute teacher is “rumored” to be an activist and the TV station covering this is getting a lot of blowback commentary.
A follow up report showed the shelves at other schools far from empty.

“Rumored”…

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is the one that I was hoping to challenge and get taken off the shelves in Iowa!

Regarding this being a fake narrative and today’s GOP….George Orwell said it best in his novel 1984…”The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
You will get your chance soon enough. The new laws being crammed through now will allow for a challenge in any school district to be enforced in all. Kimmie is going to wipe the bookshelves of Iowa clean.

That teachers are removing or being required to remove books from their classroom or face a potential felony charge based on an intentionally vague statute.

Other than that, nothing.
That's not entirely accurate. Books have to be vetted and approved by the media specialist. The definition might be vague by your standards, but there's never going to be 100% agreement on what is appropriate or inappropriate for specific age groups.

We already see teachers in various places have pushed the limits on what they are providing students and teaching that's outside of a normal curriculum. Parents weren't always aware until zoom meetings started exposing it.

That's exactly the point of the bill. Most First Amendment lawyers can tell your where know the First Amendment line is drawn - no child porn, no true threats, no defamation, etc.

Reasonable people can and will disagree on where the line of, "suited to student needs and the ability to comprehend the material presented" and "appropriate for the grade level" and "harmful material" of verbal accounts of "sexual conduct." (Goodbye Romeo and Juliet).

Vetting the books through a "state trained" "media specialist" chills free speech.

Your libertarian leanings should not be supporting this law ...

Well TBH I never saw Romeo and Juliet in the K-3 library anyway...

Compared to NH, absofvckinglutely
We’re all allowed to have our own opinion. Maybe he is and maybe he isn’t.

My (no pics) daughter teaches middle school in Duval County Public Schools. When I asked her a few weeks ago, she had not been told to remove any books from her classroom. I'll be down there to see her this weekend and will report any updates back to the group.
