This is, again, THE POINT.
Twitter Blue is trying to gain credibility, so that when Election 2024 rolls around, all the Blue Checks are owned by trolls and foreign agents.
That's WSJ opinion, not WSJ news.
I'll state it one more time here:
If your strategy is to "build trust in Blue Checks", you would absolutely let celebs and known people get them for free NOW; when 2024 Election comes around, you can now "flood the zone" with bots and trolls who get free or paid Blue Checks. And by then, everyone associates Blue Checks with valid or trusted information.
This is the Long Game that Russian/fascist propaganda would play to game the system down the road, when they can influence elections.
Along with the feeds getting worse and more trashy, with the updated hierarchy, the blue check mark replies are prioritized regardless of the quality of the reply. You lose your voice if you ever had one. Admittedly I do not often reply but find it useless to even attempt a reply as it will be stifled in the views.
Which means Elon Fanboys get amplified.
I've given up on twitter. I had managed to curate a feed that only gave me sports, arts, and funny pet videos. Ever since the last few months even that feed is getting filled with political nonsense. I'm officially out.

Which, AGAIN, is why he's handing out Blue Checks to actual celebs and popular accounts NOW, so that later people can associate Blue Checks with "valid" users, not bots and trolls. Only, that seems to be backfiring, at least for now...
