Even though the DeJean call cost Iowa the game, I felt like the Hill fumble in the Michigan game was a more egregious example of terrible officiating.
Whether or not DeJean’s left arm gave an “invalid fair catch signal” was a judgment call. Whether or not Hill’s arm was moving forward when the ball was knocked out of his hand was a judgment call.
But the fact that multiple officials blew the play dead before Michigan recovered the ball was not a judgment call. It was clearly obvious. There was absolutely no justification for giving the ball to Michigan.
Michigan won the game decisively with or without that ruling, but it’s inexcusable to get a call that horribly wrong when you have the benefit of replay.
