The Irishman

Really wanted to love the movie but I couldn't get past this scene and a handful of others like it. The scene at the beginning where Russell (Pesci) is fixing a young Frank's (DeNiro) truck and then calls him "kid" or "young man" or some like comment implying he's taking to a man in his 30's, uh Marty, we aren't stupid. The new CGI method can only do so much, it can't cover every wrinkle or make up for every slow movement. At no time in the movie am I buying DeNiro is a young man...not once.

Some good moments but too long and poorly casted and I say that as someone who has really enjoyed their previous work together. This is nowhere near Goodfellas or Casino, shouldn't even be mentioned in the same discussion. I'm surprised it has received so much positive attention.

Kind of a sad end to all their amazing work together from my perspective.

I haven't seen it yet but someone said it should have been longer???

I understood it was already 3.5 hours long. WTF?

My bladder is lucky to make it 2 hours anyway. Do they still produce movies with an intermission?

It is the best movie I have watched in sometime. Afterwards I was inspired to watch Gangs of New York and Taxi Driver.

The length was an issue. It should have been twice as long.

No such thing as a too long Scorsese movie. I’m Departed freak, but watched Raging Bull for the 20+ time afterwards. I’ve watched all his movies too many times and I don’t watch a movie more than once usually. I made an exception again last night. I’ll watch The Irishman again this weekend too. Don’t know how many more Martin has left in him.

He’s creative cinematography was lacking in The Irishman, but he makes the only movies I like so he gets a pass on that. I have a thing for Wolverine movies too which is odd.

Ugh, this was a 3.5 hour slog. No where near the level of other mob classics.

I thought Pacino was a terrible Hoffa. Nicholson crushed that role and that was kinda my expectation with Pacino.

overall, I like the story, but the movie seemed awkward with some of the acting. Most Netflix movies come across like that to me.

I really enjoyed Pacino as Hoffa. The ending was very difficult for me to watch. His reaction when Sheeran would give his final warning...oh wow.

I guess if I had complaints:
Not sure what to make of the Pesci's relationship with DeNiro's daughter. Seemed to represent her knowing who her father really was but seemed forced to me.

Watching the movie, least favorite thing about the movie was DeNiro as a young Irishman. I thought they should have gone the Godfather 2 route and found a young actor to play the role. BUT... Sheeran would have been 40 in 1960 when he started working for the Mob and 48 when he got divorced). So maybe the middle age De Niro did work well.

Sheeran saw 411 days of combat. Compared to the average 100 days. No wonder he was so good at "painting houses".

Yep. I watched the first 1.5 hours, got bored and turned it off. The casting was terrible. I know Scorsese likes to work with this group of guys, but the top three roles were miscast.

The problem with people that need instant gratification. Phones/Tablets/Computers.
Uh, no. That hot take is absolutely a bad one. I have watched and loved many long, epic movies. This just isn’t a very good one. For the record, I also am the kind of person who enjoys independent films and character studies, and simply cannot stand superhero and action movies. And to respond to another of your posts in this thread, I am a regular reader. I spent four hours today reading a book.

Don't think it was that hot of a take...I don't watch ESPN talkies...apparently you do. Says all I need to know. It is fine that you don't like the movie. To each their own. Have a good rest of your weekend.

Wrong again. Perhaps I will finish the film at some point and see if my mind is changed. I really had trouble getting past the casting problem.

I would suggest passing on watching the rest. Your points on the first hour and a half are spot on in my opinion and the last hour didn't do much for me at all. Love everyone involved with the film but this one missed the mark.

When did you last read a book? And before you can wikipedia something to make yourself sound smart....just be honest with yourself. I'm guilty of this as well.

My last book was Richard Dawkins’ latest, Outgrowing God. I read it before it was released in the states. Any other demeaning questions?

Started watching last night. Watched 2 hours, turned it off and went to bed not thinking I’d ever finish it. Woke up and decided to watch the rest. Glad I did. Wasn’t overly impressed but thought it was solid. Watched it again tonight all the way through in one sitting. Loved it. A fantastic look at life, how fast it goes, and the regrets many people leave behind.

Is it possible for Dawkins to top Selfish Gene? Never saw a reason to read any of his books on atheism.

Yeah, wish they would have just used a younger actor who looks like Robert Deniro for when Frank was younger, like he is in this scene. Then bring in Deniro mid-movie when Frank was getting a little older.

I mean, this scene was kind of embarrassing to watch when you compare it to Jimmy from Goodfellas kicking and beating Billy Batts.

Deniro was 45-46 when filming Good Fellas..which was pretty much 30 years ago.

You seem like a tool who doesn't know anything about sports.

I never knew the mob's favorite choice of hotels was Howard Johnsons..... 3.5 hours seemed a little long... still enjoyed the flick

I rewatched it again and liked it even more the second time through. I missed a few small things that made it flow even better. I will probably start it again soon, and I'm not a huge rewatcher.

I'm not big on a lot of the super hero movies but I really enjoyed the Wolverine ones too. Probably because they go way more into his character, his past, and try to understand how and why he is.
