The Legend of Jon Budmayr

Top 5 regrettable Iowa football "isms" under Kirk and Brian.
(in no particular order). On 2nd thought, maybe a bingo card is needed? :)

5. "That's Football"
4. Any reference to the Ravens, Jonathon Ogden, Browns or obscure 80s OL reference
3. "Budmayr is a gift from Heaven"
2. "What's the upside?"
1. "You don't see practice, we do!" OR "Just clean some things up...we'll get better."

What else ya got?
Fat Cats

Brian is collecting unemployment and is likely unhirable in college football no matter how many strings his dad pulls.

Copeland was axed for consistently having the worst WR corp in all of college football and head coaches will likely laugh in his face should he apply for another WR coach position and they take a look at his film.

So how on earth is the infamous "QB whisperer" still employed by Iowa football? When you're cleaning house to improve the offense, wouldn't the first one to go be the unnecessary, useless, and overpaid "analyst?

There are elite level analysts contributing to teams that already have stud position coaches and coordinators. Paul Chryst is an analyst. Joe Philbin is an analyst. Do we really think Bud is in that stratosphere? What can he say during an annual review of his job performance that would lead to keeping his job...let along possibly being promoted to WR coach?

If Brian and Copeland have to go, there is no doubt Bud should be gone too. If he even gets an interview for the WR coach position it does a disservice to all the talented hard working coaches out there looking to break into a Power 5 school position coach job.

The guy was the worst coach on staff all year. If Brian and Copeland have to go, there is no doubt Bud should be gone too.
Lol. Yeah, right.

His interview would consist of his mouth being full and his hands cupping.. .

Does Bud fail upward yet again this offseason? After being the most failed coach on a failed offense, he's actually in the running to be PROMOTED to WR coach? What, exactly, are the qualifications that would make him the best available candidate for the job? Aside from the head coach's complete laziness to actually do the work of searching for a top WR coach.

Pretty sure Brian is still getting paid by the university until his contract ends in June or around that time from what others have said

Cmon Slaw. He's on a mission from God. He either gets promoted, or Kirk gets flagged for eternal damnation. What choice would you make?

Even God himself once said there are pop warner and flag football coaches in every state that are more capable and more deserving of a Big 10 position coach position that Jon Budmyr.

And there you have it. Cats with their 9 lives have nothing on good ol' Jonny. Failing upward yet again by receiving a promotion for his amazing work coaching BY FAR the worst QBs in the country last year. They had the mechanics, pocket presence, and mental game of a wet sock. What better reason could there be to give the guy a raise, a promotion, and assign him to fix Iowa's broken WR room.

It's now been an entire year since the OP. And what has ol' Bud accomplished since then to boost his profile?
  • He masterminded the single worst single season of QB play in Big 10 history in 2023
  • He used his "success" as passing game coordinator to save his job, obtain a substantial raise, and a promotion to WRs coach
  • He committed the first major recruiting violation in Ferentz's 26 years at Iowa, resulting in a black eye to the program
  • He managed to single handedly get Kirk suspended for the first time in his lengthy career, tarnishing what was a clean reputation
  • He was responsible for recruiting Michigan's handicapped leftover QB, blowing 50% of Iowa's total NIL allotment on 1 below avg player
  • The QB whisperer's top QB recruit, a 6th year senior, is now the 16th rated QB in the Big 10
  • The QB whisperer's QB recruit last year ranked dead last in all of college football and is now playing at Utah Tech, which would get beat by Dowling.
At this unprecedented pace of failing upward, which has not been seen in this country since Kamala Harris, look for Bud to be named OC next year, and head coach of Iowa when Kirk decides to retire.

No Budmayr fan or apologist but a couple of issues with some of your points:
  1. Masterminded? Wasn't that ultimately Brian's responsibility?
  2. Singlehandedly? Didn't Kirk actually make the call to get himself suspended? He wasn't suspended for what an assistant did.
  3. Clean reputation? I get this if you mean actual recruiting violations, but didn't Iowa also self-report on Proctor? Regardless of what you think of Kirk positive or negative, his reputation was at least slightly marred by the Rabdo issue and the lawsuit. I agree he was cleared, but in making a reputation comment they are still in play.
