While there are numerous problems plaguing Iowa football, one of the most comical internal issues is the rise of the legend of "offensive guru" Jon Budmayr. If you look up "failing upward" in the dictionary, there's actually a picture of the guy smiling from ear to ear.

Let's look at what he has accomplished in his football career, then go back and quote people on this board/Kirk himself who hailed his hiring as exactly what Iowa needed to get the offense going.

2018 - 2020. Got his first paid assistant position as Wisconsin's QBs coach. Wisconsin goes on to have its worst offensive year of the decade. QB Hornibrook averaged just 140 yards passing per game (worst in the Big 10) and the team went a terrible 5-4 in Big 10 play. The following year, he coached a guy named Jack Coan who averaged just 190 yards passing per game. He promptly left and transferred to Notre Dame. The following year was notorious bust Graham Mertz, who averaged 175 yards passing per game. Mertz too didn’t like the coaching and transferred out of the program.

2021. Despite his struggles, Budmayr was somehow hired as offensive coordinator of Colorado State. Under Budmatr, the team went 3-9 and ranked 98th in scoring offense. They were one of the worst teams in football. He was promptly fired.

2022 - 2023. After failure at two stints, coach Ferentz, known for his brilliant hiring judgment, brings Budmayr in to revive Iowa's ailing offense. The Hawks had gone 10-4 the prior year, but the offense ranked 99th in scoring. With coach B's innovative ideas and new plays, the Hawkeye offense regressed all the way down to 123rd. They became an offensive laughingstock. Rather than firing the “QBs analyst,” Kirk doubled down and gave him a substantial raise (amounting to $28,000 per month) and a new job title (senior assistant head coach). Now, with a much upgraded qb, Bud picked up right where he left off, and the offense ranks 107th. Is another raise in the horizon?

Brian Ferentz has taken a lot of heat...rightfully so. As has Iowa's incompetent OL coach who Kirk continues to praise. But why is this worthless "QB guru," who has never had any coaching success at any level, avoiding all scrutiny. He's supposed to be the QB whisperer, he’s paid tremendously well, yet he's overseen two of the worst QB seasons in Iowa football history. $28,000 per month of state money (more than most surgeons) for doing absolutely nothing. Did he marry one of Kirk's kids or something?

He might have committed career suicide by attaching his name to this offense.

Then again, I’m sure he wouldn’t be an “offensive analyst” at Iowa if he could get an actual assistant coach job somewhere else.

Sounds like we are stuck with this lemon hire - which is sad. Wisconsin seems to have their head screwed on right, they won’t hesitate to part ways with any coach that is not performing up to their standards. 😎 I really hope that Beth does not turn into the Capt’s puppet - but from what I am hearing she seems like a great hire, so fingers crossed….

Offensive cupboard.
you should probably head to the recruiting page and take a look, not to mention the 2 deeps. Brown isn't going anywhere, Seth Anderson "could" be an absolute weapon, Lachey may be back, and Ostrenga will be decent. RB is young, QB could be Cade, if not another transfer. This cupboard is barren shit is old. When Kirk stepped in the cupboard was bare.

That description of performance is actually what I would expect for a hire like this on the offensive side of the ball for KF. If you also told me that he further specializes in working with immobile QBs and expects it to take his QBs at least 18 months in the program to learn the playbook then it would be even more obvious how he wound up here.

Anyone on the offense left to attack?

WOuldn't it be nice if our QBs had an OC\position coach that could get them these stats thus far in the year:

QB1
50/62 (80%) 562 yds 4 TD ZERO INT's
30 rushes 158yds 5 TD

QB2
6/11 88 yds ZERO INTs
21 rushes 223yds 4td

Can’t even imagine a 60% completion rate. Haven’t had one of those since CJB

assuming that the facts are accurate, i have say it’s a well researched and hard hitting piece. at this point deacon hill is the only (far fetched) possibility that could redeem making this hire

So the cup runneth over? I don't see a lot of talent on the OL or at WR/slot. We are solid at TE and RB. Cade is injured---not his fault, but most teams will play a backup QB if the starter is hurt.

Although I have no quibbles with the points made in your comment, I'm confused about the "state money" allegation. It seems to imply that Budmyer is being paid from taxpayer money. Unless something has drastically changed at UI, the athletic department runs in the black from money it takes in from receipts, the Big Ten, etc. without receiving any money from the state. Do you know otherwise?

This board needs more humor. Good job!

Normally his performance at Colorado State would have prevented him from ever being hired in the coaching field again. At Iowa, it was grounds for anointing him an "offensive guru" because his level of success was measured against Brian's rather than the average offensive coach.

I've posted about his 'accolades' here before. Kirk literally called him a gift from heaven. Ferentz makes really bad offensive hires. It isn't some conspiracy where Kirk runs the offense and it doesn't matter who you call the OC. He just sucks at putting good people in those jobs. Gifts from heaven don't come in the form of fired group of 5 coordinators. Although give him credit, he at least GOT that job without being family of the head coach so he's still more qualified to run an offense than Biff is. But just watch, guarantee you he is a sacrificial lamb when Ferentz HAS to fire someone this year to keep a buffer for his kid.

You're the guy who said Sam LaPorta would not catch a pass in the NFL.

You're the guy with the nickname of ColeSlaw.

Enough said.

My assumption is if you can manage to get an interview with Kirk, all you need to do is find a way to work Chuck Noll, Joe Moore, or Jackie Sherrill into the conversation and you'll have a job for life.

The offensive cupboard has been bare for years.
It will always appear bare when you have an incompetent bozo running the offensive show.

The scheme and game planning is terrible. I take that back, the scripted plays are averaging over 7 yards per play. Then poor Brian has to 'think' on his own and that hurts us all.

Didn't we need Budmayr in order to get Cade McNamara? I always thought that was the whole point of his hiring/promotion.
