The Standpoint Podcast with JBO

I understand the frustration fans feel with a loss. I do not understand when fans feel the need to reach out to the players on social media to air their grievances. The players are putting in the work and want to win just as badly as we do. They can use our support, but do not need our criticism.

I know Kirk took a lot of flack for his policy of keeping his players off of Twitter, but I can appreciate it. We have seen some players (Josey Jewel) who look for that criticism as motivation, but more often than not it becomes more of a distraction (Zach McCabe and Jordan Bohannon).

This board can be hard to read after a loss for anyone not playing. I cannot imagine what it would be like for a player or their family as has been seen with some of the parents of the football players.

This should be a site where we come to commiserate wins and losses. I hope we can all keep in mind that most of the people on this board are Hawk fans and we all want the Hawks to win.

Iowa fans want something of significance they can taste it more than ever before. Unfortunately, it means the fan/player interaction suffers with heightened expectations.

I dont agree with ANYONE going after a player directly on Twitter whatsoever. But the kid appears to be a bit coddled and he's getting more and more desperate as

The real world is slowly catching up to him. Cant play a game for your entire life as it does not pay the bills for 99% of athletes after college.

Jordan apparently thinks it can after making a few game winners for a 20-11 team.

It kinda bugs me to see him constantly complain about the fans.. listen man, I get it. But that’s just a reality of sports. And for every 1 douche he has to deal with he has hundreds of Hawkeyes who support him and uplift him W or L. He has also been one to poke the Bear (ISU) in the past.. so he kind of does it to himself a bit. His seasons over.

More like coaching is semi closed fraternity where your 1st break depends on who you know more than what you know... BF at Iowa is prime example...got job at New England through Dad's connections than fast track to Offensive coordinator under his Dad. Cmac is probably on same path.

You honestly don't think those coaching at NCAA P5 teams in the money sports B-ball/football aren't cleaning up money wise while the athletes get scholarships? After coaches, Next in Line is Big Commissioner, Next in line are the ADs..all well compensated. Then you can look at former players like say a Tyler Sash or Greenwood...how well are they doing? My beef would be that some of the money going to the elites should be instead distributed to the athletes, especially athletes with injuries. JBo with both his hips replaced, yeah, he should be getting some of Fran's money.

Like I said, uneducated fans.

This is literally one of the worst takes I’ve read on social media all year.

Actually they do. Ask any kid coming out of College deep in debt if they would take some criticism in exchange for that bill. I'm guessing it would be 100%, Yepper. And I don't see any of these pampered Athletes bitching when the accolades and perks of being a D1 Athlete come their way.

They signed up for it, been the same way since the beginning of time. Welcome to Real World 101.
Boom! Hit the nail on the head. JBO needs to write the check for school, pay for meals, etc. Quit your whining and play.

Interesting how some of the Iowa players are allowing a small percentage of a "fan base" to bother them.
My advice would be to stop commenting and talking about the fans, and just go out and enjoy playing D1 basketball with your buddies. Life is not easy or fair...and those that succeed learn how to handle stress and problems through positive actions...and resilience.

Cheers and GO HAWKS!

Personally I did not care for the podcast, not so much the content as the sound quality, hard to understand at times. Of course that could just be me getting old.

What I do find humorous is some people getting worked up by his criticism of fans negative posts on Twitter while those same fans claim that he should be able to take the heat since he is a D1 athlete.

Pretty interesting comments, especially around the 26 minute mark. Saying they don't make enough $ for the criticism they are getting from some of the fans. Pretty good episode. Big game tomorrow! GO HAWKS!
Weak sauce there.

I would give my left nut to NOT have the college debt I have.

These guys just don't know how lucky and fortunate they truly are, which is not their fault - they simply don't know what it's like to have significant college debt....

I would also give your left nut for no college debt. Fun fact, if you have 2 balls then you have an above average amount of balls due to there being people with less than 2 😁 Sadly thats what my college debt taught me

We are the customer not his boss. Walk into any business and start throwing the same level of vitriol at the employees there that gets thrown at these young men and you will find yourself at a minimum invited to leave and never come back with a very clear message that we don't need your business. No employer or owner is going to tolerate the abuse of their employees very long. Even if you are right you will be told to get ****ed. Even if the employee gets fired you will be told to get ****ed.

These student athletes live in the real world and their mistakes are on public display. I doubt many of the people banging their chest about all these benefits these kids get could withstand even a fraction of the attention or the criticism that these kids deal with all the time. Yes they signed up for their job.....so did you.

He does. It’s called a scholarship, meals, etc. at the tune of about $150,000 over four years.

At the company store. Using your logic you shouldn't ever get a raise again. After all you are willing to do the work at this current rate why should you ever get more? Especially if the company is making millions and not passing through even a part of that to the employees.

Unless I fall into some $, my college debt will still be looking right back at me at your age.

All you needed to do was be in the top 3 percent of talent and work ethic at either basketball or football coming out of high school and you would not have any student debt.....

All you needed to do was choose a school that would fit your financial status paired with your income potential. Self awareness and ownership are extremely important here. I am a walking example of someone who left school with 90k in loans with a horse shit communications degree. But that was on me...

Tuition goes up every year, so technically the athletes do get a raise. I guess.

For those in the "players should be able to profit off of their likeness" crowed . . . would you have a problem with Phil Knight paying $1,000,000 to each of the 10 players on the Oregon basketball team for 100 of their autographs? Or, perhaps even more relevant, are you OK with Oregon's basketball coach being able to tell recruits that, if they sign with Oregon, they will receive $1,000,000 from Phil Knight for 100 of their autographs?

Will players like Bohannon be OK when they learn that members of the AD are trying to lineup autograph sessions at the local car dealership for Garza, Weiskamp and Fredrick?

"Players should be able to profit off of their likeness" sounds easy in theory. In practice, I feel as if it will be incredibly difficult to manage.

I’d be cool with it. Sounds to me like a shift in power from traditional blue bloods to ones who can pay more. Schools like Iowa will still have the opportunity to succeed with four year players because the allure and payday of professional sports will still exceed what is available at the college level and the one-and-done players will continue to be one-and-done players. However, in the instance that players have the opportunity to profit off of themselves, the one-and-done rule should be done away with which would increase parity across the board

A couple other points: the opportunity for businesses to put money into players could be good economic stimulus and, indirectly, benefit some impoverished areas within the United States. Secondly, most businesses, Nike notwithstanding, don’t have the funds to invest in both football and basketball athletes in perpetuity, so I’m not sure it would create quite the disparity that you are suggesting

Its not schools that would be paying for autographs it would be shoe companies and other similar entities.

The shoe companies would then send the players where they want to which would be a handful of blue blood programs where they would be the most visible on TV.

Allowing players to sell themselves in this way will not increase parity. Im not sure it would change much though as this stuff already goes on under the table.

The one and done is already gone, it was an nba players union rule.

My comment about the shift from blue bloods to ones who can pay more was poorly phrased. I meant go to schools where donors/corporations/whatever are willing to pay more

I don't see any scenario where Iowa comes out better if it goes that way.

IMO players can play professionally any time they want to so if that's what you want to do just do it.

You all act like that isn't happening already. We just spent 90 million dollars to make our football stadium prettier for rich people. You think somehow spending 90 million dollars on a stadium upgrade is pure but a kid getting money directly is bad. I'm sure Clemson's water slide in their football facility was totally needed right?

Not better, but not substantially worse imo.. Iowa typically isn’t competing for the recruits that we are talking about here anyways. So Duke is going to recruit better than they already do? Meh

You can go pro overseas, but unless you are a sure fire first round pick (Doncic, Rubio, Porzingis, Simmons) or elite prospect (Mudiay, Ball), American college sports is going to be your best pathway to develop, prove yourself, get noticed, and drafted. The fallback of a free education helps a lot too. If I were on scholarship academically at a given university and used my gift to make money elsewhere, nobody would have an issue with it. But the types of players who are capable of branding themselves to make money are likely also making their colleges money. So why can’t they be afforded the same opportunity?

Given some of the comments of JBo and Connor, it's obvious that at least some of the players are reading these boards and listening to the criticism, wherever it arises, when they lose. Rather unfortunate given the Hot/Cold nature of so many on here.
No, they get it directly thru Twitter.

I dont think i have a problem with players making money off their likeness PROVIDED, there is no affiliation with the school whatsoever. Like, if the player can sign autographs for 2 hours at a dealership.....thats fine. But they cannot show up in school apparel, they cannot sign pictures with them wearing school uniforms etc. If they want to sign a kids jersey that the kid bought, sure. This way they are being paid for "their likeness', not being paid for any association linked with the school. But of course this would never be enforced. lol

If you can't take the heat, stay out of the Kitchen.

Plenty of other options. That applies to every situation in life. You make the choice, you deal with the consequences, good and bad.

The LAST person on Earth I'm going to feel sorry for is a coddled D1 Athlete on a full ride scholarship. Not happening.

Water Slide? Just another perk for being a student athlete. All those other students don't even get to look at it.

Kudos to you for owning up to that, I'm sure you're wise enough to know that boat you were in is more loaded than Noahs Ark could ever be! Ha!

Degrees in low paying fields aren't worth the paper they're printed on, but that doesn't stop people from getting them and crying about the reality later.

I'm not smart enough to figure out why people do that. I suppose I could have taken on a shitload of debt to piece it altogether, but I'm ok with it As-Is! Guess that's on me! ;)
