The secret to making "everyday" shoes last is to wear more than one pair of them. Believe I own roughly 20 pairs of shoes/boots/winter footwear. I never overuse any of them, so they all last a LONG time.
If you love these specific shoes THAT much, next time they're available buy FOUR pairs of them - then rotate those 4 pairs to where none of them get worn out quickly. And yeah, getting one good year out of a pair of shoes in my book is ridiculous.
Yes, buying 4 at once sucks...but then again you're also not needing to scrounge another pair up when you have an unscheduled blowout, either.
I have 4 pairs of "everyday" shoes in my rotation - along with the last rotation used for as you say, the dirty work. I also have a pair of shoes that I would call my boat shoes - they actually get submerged in river/lake water about 20 times per year - and I believe those are something like 7-8 years old now and are in great condition still.
4 everyday tennies, a couple "dress" tennies, I believe 4 dirty work tennies, a couple traditional dress shoe pairs, 3 different slipper/slip-ons, an electrician's pair of steel toed boots (was required for my prior job on occasion), winter boots (nice Keen's), nice pair of heavy duty sandals (also Keen's), and my boat shoes.
Think that covers it - I think the last pair I bought in the lot was 2 years ago. None of these are expensive/fancy...but I sure's hell get my money's worth out of them all.
