This is a bad basketball team

As an outsider, my opinion is worthless, but FWIW this team has problems that aren't physical. They act like they don't want to be there.
That has got to start with Patrick. He looks miserable and lost, hope he's better off the court than he appears on it

We're rebuilding and this team will improve as the season moves forward,.. Conference is down this year so I can see us finishing around .500 in Big10 play

Yeah, they are not good. But why are they this bad?

Sure defense is lousy. But, everything is lousy.

I don't get it.

I really have a strong feeling this will be Fran’s last year. He will become Iowa’s winningest coach. The timing is perfect. Patrick will be gone. Jack has one more year in high school and has said he’s not coming to Iowa. There’s no question Fran us a devout family man. With all he’s been through with his family, I just think the timing is perfect to step down.

What has the family gone through? Fran was making maybe $250K/yr at Siena---good money, but not $3 million year. Iowa has been a life changing for positive financial move. PMAC had a huge scare, but he came through it thankfully. The accident where Fran's boy killed a jogger---that seems like a lot bigger tragedy for the guy that got killed and his family.

All the money in the world doesn’t make the things that have happened to Fran and his family go away. I agree the death of the jogger was tragic for that family. It was also tragic for Jack and the entire McCaffery family. And, while PMac’s ordeal with cancer worked out, I think there are other issues there. The family has gone through a lot here. I just think the timing is right for Fran to step down and seek a change of scenery and enjoy watching Jack play.

Lack of talent and strange coaching decisions. This season will be a disaster. Most of Iowa's players would sit on the bench on other teams.

Agreed - We just look slow and weak… when you have those qualities sometimes tough defense can make up for lack of athleticism, but that is not the case with Iowa….💀 As a side note - Peyton Sandfort seems to act like a DB to his teammates…😉

It's an iffing down year, get over it, it happens to a lot of teams now and then. If you all can't handle it, why are you watching, and then coming on this message board and reaffirming what we all know!
There isn't a bigger Hawk fan then me, I live for Iowa basketball every year and have been as disappointed as most of you for the lack of NCAA success, but I enjoy the games and I'm hoping the freshman are the beginnings of an uptick in Iowa basketball in the coming years or as long as I'm on the right side of the grass. Don't have many more years left.
I think most fans could live with a down year if the up years were better than they have been. Getting to the tourney after this many years with the program just isn’t that impressive. Add in that Fran is incapable of making any changes to his coaching philosophy and that equals us already seeing the best of what he delivers. Just like the game yesterday, in what world does starting 4 guys over 6’7 the way the game is played these days, make any sense? Then playing a sg as pg and expecting success. It just doesn’t make any sense to anyone but him!

Last three NCAA tournaments Iowa has lost to a lower seeded team.
2-7
5-12 A 12 that should have been a 14 seed.
8-9
It's not like they got beat by teams that suddenly got hot and made a run. They all got blown out their next game.
Frans teams have made 2nd round 4x and trailed by double-digits at halftime each time.

And on top of starting a bunch of forwards together still getting destroyed in the paint.

Rebuilding years are fine if your building to something but Fran had his shot to do something the last 4 years and blew it.

This team might have the worst interior defense of any team I can remember at Iowa, and defense has not been a point of emphasis on past teams. Replacing Bowen, who maybe has performed his job as well as any of the other regulars, just made the offense almost as bad the defense. Patrick and Krikke are awful defenders, but Krikke at least brings something they need on the other end. Freeman in place of Patrick is the obvious move, but apparently the Mac family isn't going to make that happen. This is the third game in a row that I turned off long before the end. I sat out the Lick years, but i don't think I have not done that before in 40 years. Maybe this is the time for Fran to fade off into the sunset to be there for his family, and let Iowa BB move forward. I still believe that the freshman class and the incoming 2024 class would give a coach a good base to work with, assuming the guys don't hit the portal.

Agree, Krikke makes Rebraca look like Ben Wallace. He refuses to even step in front of a driver.

You have no shot playing that way.

Fran is making the same mistake he always does by not sacrificing some wins up front to get younger players pt and pay it off on the back end. This always limits what his teams can do in March.

Only this time his older players can't even beat the bad teams so he's sacrificing everything for no return.

The decision to let Nimmers go so he can redshirt Mulvey seems pretty brilliant right now too.

There is an old trade adage is basketball that 4 quarters does not equal 1 dollar. Getting 4 good players for Jordan isn't a good trade.

4 bad front defenders / rebounders is not going to equal better front court defense.

haha

The team doesn't lack talent. It lacks coaching.
I think it's a fair amount of both. There is no one left on this team where opposing staffs sit around a table and discuss "Now how do we stop this guy from beating us?". That hasn't been the case for the last 4 years until now. We had Garza and Joe W. Then we had Keegan. Then we had Kris and Filip. This year we have.....?

There are no stars on this team today and the starting unit really has no one with a consistently good all around game. Maybe Freeman becomes that guy.

Krikke is a force. His average and shooting percentage is way up there. His supporting cast sleep walks at times. Perkins and Payton can and should often have monster games. Freeman, Dix, and Brock (soon) are very capable of being real stars.

Krikke is a very good offensive player. He is a way below average defender and rebounder for the 4-5 spot, even for Iowa. Perkins is a bit of a wildcard. He's either a hero or a detriment, but is pretty much the same player he was last year. Maddeningly inconsistent. Sandfort is inconsistent as well and lacks the necessary quickness defensively. Freeman is a fine post player today. Dix is a better defensive version of CJ who needs to be more aggressive. The book is still being written on Harding. None of these guys is targeted by the opposition.

Man I'm not the biggest Fran guy here but a little perspective is required. Since taking over the trainwreck of Lick, discounting the 1st 2 years, Fran starting in the 2012-13 season through last year, he's 232-139. That's pretty damn good. Made the tournament 7 out of the last 10 years. Again, perspective, that's pretty good at Iowa. 8 of those years he's had us at number 10, and twice we've been as high as number 3. Unfortunately we've only finished ranked in the final polls top 25 4 times, and 2 of them were at 25, so we've obviously faltered come tourney time. Honestly, we're a football school. Carver sucks, the students don't care and I'm not sure short of a Final 4 run we'd still consistently fill up the place. I happened to go compare IU, a 100% so called basketball school. In that same period they're 222-144. and really haven't made any significant run in the tournament at all. They're currently on their 3rd coach in that time frame and are coming off a 104-76 woodshed beating from Auburn. We're a much better destination job in football than basketball. Sell out Kinnick every game, NIL money, etc. The next coach will face some significant challenges to win here. I'm not saying I'll cry at all if this is Fran's last year but our basketball facilities and NIL need some significant upgrades.

All this is true and it's why I think it's so important to not miss out on the DeVries opportunity.

A guy who can make Drake a winner can improve Iowa and he's an Iowa guy so not nearly as likely to bolt after success.

Krikke may very well be the worst 4/5 defender in the last 40 years of Hawkeye basketball.

It’s been 13 years since lickliter. Who F’ing cares at this point.
No defense. No attempt to adapt or change.
Poor judge of talent when it came to his kids.
Most coaches are harder on their kids than others. Not seen that with fran. Fran actually let cmac affect his coaching. He let pmac get away with no effort which is the one thing you will see coaches hammer their own kids for more than others.
Poor judge of talent in games and for who plays.
Struggles in games with adjustments. Which is odd because his plays out of timeouts and out of bounds are as good as it gets.
Ogelsby. Enough said
Fran is to pg’s ad Brian is to qbs.

Put in Deacon at the 4 spot

Freeman has good potential
