This longshoreman strike will get ugly

Lots of you guys like to throw around the term "conspiracy". I'm curious what your angle is here.

Trump set this up but was foiled?
The current admin set it up so they could look like heroes?
The Union guy was just positioning himself for a payoff from the highest bidder?
How/why did it go from serious threat to fixed (not really) so fast?
What happens in 90 days? It's still not resolved.

Just guessing here but I suspect the narrative going forward will vary depending on if you like your conspiracies to be of the far left or far right variety:

Far left: Trump tried to influence the corrupt union boss, but the effort was thrwarted by brilliant negotiations from the Biden admin (Pete B)

Far right: the Biden admin faked the crisis so they could solve it weeks before the election.

Most probable reality: sounds like a dumbass corrupt union boss overplayed his hand. Guy was getting lit up by both sides of the aisle for the stupidity of saying we should go backwards on our use of technology. So with facilitation from the Biden admin they threw him a small concession that they will continue to discuss wages without undermining automation. Both sides get something to move the discussion forward and both sides lose something they valued.

I hear things were pretty tough when they were building the Pyramids too. Can you fill us in on that? 🙄
The pharaoh would have been smart to listen to Moses (the union steward) after the Nile turned red with blood. But “no”…. Typical management, the Pharoh thought he knew best…and he ended up losing everything he was fighting for.

Trump would have royally screwed this up. He probably would have threatened the workers with prison if they didn't get back to work.
You are off the rails man, nobody has been cheering this on, read the thread.

"Trump would have royally screwed it up". Meanwhile Europe is begging the US to do more with Iran / Isreal.

Huey, we throw this term around but, you sir, are flailing.

Guess you didn't see the countless Hannity posts being bitter about this being quickly resolved.

For a brief period of time, yes. For most of my working life, no. I was in a line of work where pay and working conditions were really never an issue……but there is a reason for labor unions and a reason they need to be available to workers as an alternative -…….
There was. Not so much anymore.

No that couldn't be. Common sense doesn't play here.

FWIW, I think you nailed it, especially your last paragraph. This isn't settled...at all. It is just pushed out past the election and I would definitely be of the opinion that the tough talking union boss received plenty of "encouragement" to help move this off of the front page, so to speak.

Union workers tried to take advantage of an election. Not going to happen. They are going to get a pay raise. The real fight will be in January as they are still contesting automation (which IMHO is stupid for them to do). If I'm the union rep, I'd be advocating for my members to be trained on servicing automation equipment.

It makes zero sense not to let technology make things more efficient and cheaper.

Sorry Donald, you don't get to run on this issue.
I don’t think either candidate gets to “run on this issue”.
Here in Jacksonville - which is a big port - the local union President said last night that automation is the local members biggest issue and concern.

Daggett wasn’t interviewed. I think he drove away in his Bentley and parked in his marina spot before sailing away in his 76 foot yacht.

Did Moses drive off in a Golden Chariot down to the river and sail away on a 76 ft long Royal barge?
Stay tuned!

Rs were desperate to see bare shelves and chaos this October. Nothing would have delighted them more than violent rioters looting every store in America. Throw in some deaths and rapes and Rs would have been in heaven.
No one wants this.

Good info. I grew up in a blue collar union Democrat home. I remember going with my Dad down to the union hall when I was about six to pick up his strike pay which wasn’t much. I remember eating peanut butter and jelly tlived for supper. My Mom got a part time job waiting tables from someone at our church who owned a restaurant to make ends meet.
This was in the 50’s and it seemed like it was for things that now are taken for granted like health care.
Unions had a vital role in creating a middle class in this country. But they’ve outlived their role in many industries today.
Typical boomer - progress was great when we were young. Now progress is 'woke' and bad.

When you look at the Port of Long Beach, you understand why.

What’s wrong with this Union President being well off? He’s the President of an 85,000 member union. It’s fine if corporate execs make bank but not a union president. He has been a member of that union since 1967. Seems to be doing a good job for the Union and its members.

So he’s been in the Union since 1967? Dude is pretty old. He followed his Father into the “business”.

And they are because…………..unions are there. Take away “the union threat” and these companies will start abusing workers again.
B.S. OSHA and straight up the laws against discrimination, harassment, and competition amongst companies employing persons in trades have made benefits, wages and retirement better in most non union companies. They can keep the workers who produce, show up, and perform at a high level without having to keep the non productive.

Union tradesmen SET the standards for the trades industry. Period. Responsible employers understand this. That is why these companies succeed. Much like non-union workplaces have a solid relationship between labor and management. Some industries work to accomplish the job successfully. Some workplaces want to fight the petty battles every day.

LOL - This stuff happens all the time, the strike was called to get managements attention once they got it the union then backed off for 90 days.

Nobody came to the rescue.
