This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Some good maps at the bottom of the article...

Russia is continuing offensive operations in half a dozen directions in Ukraine according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) whose maps show the latest situation on the front line.

The think tank said Tuesday that Russian troops were continuing their push along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line in the Luhansk and Kharkiv Oblasts.

The ISW also said that Russian forces were continuing operations near Bakhmut, west and south west of the city of Donetsk, by the border between Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts. They had also made advances near Avdiivka, the city where Moscow is seeking to envelop Ukrainian troops.

The ISW said that Russian forces had continued their operations near Bakhmut without making confirmed advances. The assessment noted Ukraine's claims that its troops had repelled at least 11 of Moscow's assaults southwest of the city, which has been fiercely fought over for months.

In turn, the Russian Ministry of Defense said its forces had repelled four Ukrainian assaults south and southwest of Bakhmut. The ISW said Russian forces had made no confirmed advances around Bakhmut, where they are using "Storm-Z" assault detachments for highly attritional frontal assaults.

However, the think tank did note that Russian forces had made "confirmed gains" near Avdiivka on Tuesday. Geolocated footage showed advances along a section of the railway line north of the the city's coke plant, as well as south of its waste dump.

Military analysts say that Russia is facing high losses during its assault on the city as Moscow's forces seek to gain full control of the two oblasts of Donetsk and Luhansk.

One of the ISW's latest maps indicates these advances by the coke plant, which Moscow says is being used by Ukrainian forces as a base and weapons storage facility and is the main focus of Russian attacks. The map also shows advances in Stepove, which is further north.

Democrats are increasingly acknowledging that pairing a bipartisan border deal with new Ukraine aid is unraveling for one major reason: Most in the party never wanted this negotiation in the first place.

While key House factions like the Progressive and Hispanic Caucuses signaled more than a month ago they would oppose any immigration policy changes in a foreign aid bill, Democratic leaders and the rank-and-file in the Senate gave the bipartisan negotiators space to work out a deal. On Wednesday, it will become crystal clear that hasn’t worked out, as the GOP is expected to filibuster President Joe Biden’s foreign aid request because it lacks sufficient border security policies.

"Illia Kyva, a former deputy in Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, was found dead in the Moscow region’s Odintsovsky district, reports Russian state news media RIA Novosti, citing emergency services. Kyva was 46 years old.
The TV channel REN was the first to report his death. The Telegram channels Mash and VCHK-OGPU also reported his death. This information has not been officially confirmed.

The circumstances and causes of Ilya Kiva’s death are still unknown.

  • Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Illia Kyva advocated for Russia and Ukraine to unite. He also supported Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that “the Ukrainian people need liberation.” In March 2022, the Verkhovna Rada stripped Kyva of his parliamentary mandate. In November 2023, a Ukrainian court sentenced the former lawmaker to 14 years in absentia on charges of treason."

Honestly, i'm really not in favor of this sort of thing as it's a stupid waste of resources. Inasmuch as these defendants will never come within the jurisdiction of the United States, nothing will come of it other than a nice presser standing in front of a bank of flags. And let's not forget, btw, about the last time the DOJ had a nice presser in front of a bunch of flags and a russian entity defendant decided to show up.

" Senate Republicans blocked aid for Israel and Ukraine from advancing in a key vote on Wednesday in protest over a dispute about border security policy, a clash that threatens to derail passage of the foreign aid.

The tally for the procedural vote was 49 to 51, falling short of the 60-vote threshold needed proceed. At the end of the vote, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer switched his vote to “no” – a procedural move that will allow him to bring up the measure again in the future.

Republicans have insisted that the foreign aid must be paired with major border security policy changes. There have been talks to try to find consensus, but no bipartisan deal has been reached over the contentious issue."

Seems like Democrats would recognize people aren’t going to appreciate spending 10s of billions to protect other countries’ borders, and refusing to protect our own.

Honestly, just ****in compromise. That’s the way legislation is supposed to work.

Border security seems like a reasonable compromise to get the aid packages done. Win/win.

It’s not ‘security’ per se, in this instance according to the CNN article.
It’s blanket application of a ‘parole’ immigration status that allows the administration to increase migration levels from designated countries.
GOP sees it as an end around on immigration quotas in law, and it’s in the courts now because it’s intended to be applied on a one-on-one basis.
Biden admin is accused of using it to ‘relieve stress at the border’ by letting them in.

Just don’t call it an open border policy.

"Nothing can prevent the development of our friendly relations," Putin told MbS, and invited him to visit Moscow in return.

"It is very important for all of us to exchange information and assessments with you on what is happening in the region. Our meeting is certainly timely," Putin said.

Below is the moment of Putin's being received and welcomed by a glowing MbS, ironically at the very moment President Biden gave a White House speech bemoaning the inability of Congress to pass Ukraine defense funding, which runs out in three weeks...

As Deutsche Welle reviews, the discussions likely centered on the planned OPEC+ output cuts and the Gaza War and regional crisis in the wake of the Oct.7 Hamas attack:

The Kremlin said talks in Saudi Arabia would involve discussions on energy cooperation, including as part of OPEC+, whose members pump more than 40% of the world's oil.
Other items on the agenda include Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, the situation in Syria and Yemen, and broader issues of stability in the Gulf, as well as the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said.
Prior to his arrival in Saudi Arabia, Putin's visit to neighboring UAE also had much fanfare. This is a man still under a Hague-based ICC warrant — but you would never guess it based on the below impressive state reception...

Wow, what a day. It seems to me the head Ukrainian General wants to degrade Russia’s military capability and force projection. They certainly seem to be doing just that. These levels of losses are just incredible.

18 APV, 29 Vehicles, 18 tanks, 21 artillery? How many roubles is that up in smoke in 1 day?

It appears Russia has an endless supply of these.

Russia certainly doesn’t care about the soldiers, and views the “storm troopers” as disposable. The numbers were shocking but not anymore. They probably have millions of more undesirables they DGAF about losing. But, I just keep wondering where all of this equipment keeps coming from. It seems endless.

Either you're saying that Republicans are against continuing to aid Ukraine, or you are misusing the term "compromise".
Nope. It's been pretty transparent for a few weeks now R's wanted border security tied to the bill. A compromise should have been reached....there wasn't even much of an attempt at it. If Ukraine aid is important it should have been a priority to get a deal done.

At some point you have to ask why the Democrats always balk at border security.
Joe needs to get on the horn with Schumer and tell him he wants a deal.

It's a win/win. Pass it with border security attached and Joe and the D's get to say they gave R's what they wanted and can point to that when R's try to use the border as a talking point going into November 2024.

Win/win.

I don't understand the resistance...if they think Ukraine aid is imperative. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me...

If my memory is correct, they hit 100k casualties(dead and wounded) right around Christmas last year. There’s a good shot at them adding a quarter million to that total by Christmas this year. Crazy. That’s a lot of missing or disabled people for a country to deal with.
Russia killed around 4 million of its own citizens from 1945-1989 to keep the Communist Party in power. A couple hundred thousand is pocket change to them.
