This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Which means you don’t understand how badly they want immigration limits ignored.

More important than whatever constitutes ‘victory’ in Ukraine, we’ll see.
I don't think that's it actually.

Schumer specifically is relying on media cover to pin it on R's. If so he's an idiot.

R's won't take a political hit if Ukraine aid doesn't go through because they wanted border security added. Total misread by Schumer IMO.

"Nothing can prevent the development of our friendly relations," Putin told MbS, and invited him to visit Moscow in return.

"It is very important for all of us to exchange information and assessments with you on what is happening in the region. Our meeting is certainly timely," Putin said.

Below is the moment of Putin's being received and welcomed by a glowing MbS, ironically at the very moment President Biden gave a White House speech bemoaning the inability of Congress to pass Ukraine defense funding, which runs out in three weeks...

As Deutsche Welle reviews, the discussions likely centered on the planned OPEC+ output cuts and the Gaza War and regional crisis in the wake of the Oct.7 Hamas attack:

Prior to his arrival in Saudi Arabia, Putin's visit to neighboring UAE also had much fanfare. This is a man still under a Hague-based ICC warrant — but you would never guess it based on the below impressive state reception...

I thought this MFer was dying. Just die man.

Nope. It's been pretty transparent for a few weeks now R's wanted border security tied to the bill. A compromise should have been reached....there wasn't even much of an attempt at it. If Ukraine aid is important it should have been a priority to get a deal done.
I'm not going to hijack the thread with a discussion on the border, but here's the situation. D's want A. R's want A and B. R's say there will be no A without B. That's not compromise, that's hostage-taking. It would be a compromise if R's DIDN'T want A, and were willing to accept A to get B.

Actually it's politics as usual when the other party controls one of the legislative bodies.

That said...I agree we shouldn't hijack the thread.

Honestly, just ****in compromise. That’s the way legislation is supposed to work.
Sure, you compromise in legislation on how to adjust retirement plan rules, or infrastructure. These things aren't really related, and, you don't see anyone saying lets hold aid to Israel hostage over border security. The border security that R's have had a decade to compromise over. Putting a gun to the head of a nation fighting for their existence isn't compromise.
You guys had the WH, the House, and the Senate in 2017 and 2018 and refused to enhance border security. And, for all the scrabbling around about Biden's profligate spending, nobody is explaining how they are paying for all these extra border guards that can't be hired even under good circumstances, much less today's economy. Or, to finish the vanity wall instead of using enhanced technology to secure the border.

Border security seems like a reasonable compromise to get the aid packages done. Win/win.
The border should be a stand-alone issue as it's too big and has nothing to do with the other two countries. And since when have the Repubs EVER wanted to compromise/negotiate?

If border security is in the bill it'll pass.

If we're talking "stand alone" bills, both parties have been packing in unrelated crap into bills for quite some time now...nothing new.

It would only pass if the R's got everything they want. The border is too big to be tucked in with something else.

Maybe. I think in the end Joe/Schumer/D's will cut the deal.

Border is a major topic for R constituents so they're gonna want something to point to...

This makes me wonder what countries in the world have the actual capacity to wage war. Not band together in a large coalition, and give a little bit, or go into porcupine mode and be too painful to swallow. But if shit got real and your allies abandoned you, you could you go it alone or with maybe one other country as a ride or die, and take out another country.

To be fair, the world would be a much better place if no country had the ability to wage war of the scale you're talking about on their own. Not possible today when there are several countries that don't want to fall in line with the rest of the world in peace.

But as we know, the socialist utopia known as the EU has been enjoying domestic security ensured by the USA for the last 30+ years since the USSR collapsed. They love to flaunt their free education, healthcare, etc. compared to the USA who spends all its money on the military. But when the Red Army rolls into town guess who they'll be begging for help. Honestly, I give a lot more credit to most of the former Warsaw Pact countries that are now NATO allies in being more prepared than the original Western European NATO members.

I think a wake up call has been served to the Western European members but we'll see.

In the pacific Japan has really ramped up defense spending the last few years fwiw.
