This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

There have been a ton of shocking things about this war and how Russia continues to spiral but the development of Ukraine beginning to rule the air and take out Russian infrastructure and aircraft in actual Russia / Sea of Azov / Black Sea while better defending its infrastructure may be the most amazing of all. Russia’s military tech and performance is on par with a Middle East country.

I don’t love anything about Russia, I just point out you can’t discuss the contents of that cable, because they run counter to the neocon narrative about this war.

In light of the cable it can’t be argued they acted in ignorance about how Russia would respond. They knew. They pressed ahead anyway, and we’re watching what the experts Burns cited predicted.
Were they dismissive of the advice and predictions because they’re just bad at international affairs (totally possible, witness Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc), or did they want this predicted result?

The funniest thing to me about your misperceptions are how they come in the complete opposite of what I’ve experienced elsewhere.

On FreeRepublic.com I’m accused of being a neocon for objectively discussing Russia’s reversals and failures, and pointing out that quoting MacGregor in 2024 is just comical at this point.

People so badly want to pigeonhole others and discuss that, instead of the issues.

Whatever.

You seem to want to hitch your wagon to a single "cable" and one perspective.

Anyone with an ounce of experience in the arena knows our intel groups always have differing perspectives and conflicting readouts of "what they think will happen"

Weird that you always like to convey the ones most sympathetic to Putin, though.

Just finished reading a story about how Democrats are attempting to close the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant one of the critical suppliers to the United States military. If our troops can’t get ammunition, Ukraine definitely isn’t getting any.

Interesting how this has come about.

'OAKLAND — California Attorney General Rob Bonta, as part of a coalition of 20 attorneys general, submitted a letter to the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention calling for a federal investigation after recent reports that billions of rounds of military-grade ammunition manufactured at the federally-owned Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Missouri were sold on the civilian commercial market, and used in many of the most tragic mass shootings in recent history.

“Disturbing reports show that American taxpayers have been unintentionally and unknowingly subsidizing the production of military-grade ammunition that was used in tragic acts of gun violence,” said Attorney General Bonta. “The ammunition produced by Lake City is specifically intended for military purposes and does not have a place within our communities. We hope this investigation sets a precedent and ensures that that the U.S. government will no longer subsidize the sale of military-grade weapons and ammunition to civilians.”

The U.S. Department of Defense provides subsidies and has allegedly invested more than $860 million to the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant so that it can be kept ready to meet large-scale production needs during times of war. Yet according to recent news reports, Lake City rounds have been sold on the civilian market and have become the ammunition of choice for use in mass shootings, including:"

"FIRST ON FOX - Every republican attorney general in the country blasted their Democrat counterparts for attempting to shutter an ammunition factory in Missouri, a letter sent to the White House Wednesday revealed.

In a letter obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital, all 28 GOP attorneys general asked President Biden and White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention director Stefanie Feldman to disregard their Democrat colleagues' request to end commercial sales from Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, one of the country’s largest ammo manufacturers.

Democrats had previously asked the administration to investigate the contracting and manufacturing practices of the plant after a New York Times report alleged that "military-grade rounds" were sold commercially and were connected to mass shootings."

Personally as an outsider random internet poster. If Russia wants a combo of all that. Then he needs to pay up to Ukraine. Not only safety guarantees but economic as well. Reparations need to be made in order for them to see how costly economically these actions were. Future continued payments as well.
Bingo~ thats what the fight is all about. Who has control and interest in Ukraine. Who will make money on Ukraine. What a lot of Americans don't get is that in the 90s the west including the US neglected both nations. I actually got started in Ukraine on US Govt projects. The US also brought in the Peace Corps and these types of projects (agriculture) in the early 00s. Russia kicked the US organizations out in that country. The US pulled out Peace Corp and dropped a lot of these programs after the Orange Revolution, exactly when they should have been expanding. Peace Corps made me think there might be danger coming.

The Orange Revolution I think was predominantly grass roots with some western influence. However it did put Kathy (Katcha's) husband Yushenko in power. He was a pro west former communist central banker. Kathy was raised in Chicago (sort of met her parents on a flight). The Russians took note and pushed in Yanukovich who was pro Russian (but sort of his own man) likely in a reasonably fair election (like Chicago :) sort of. My trips there then took a decided turn in attitude. One of the guys I was working with got ruffed up by SBU.
You really need to get out of your cold war bunker. Military service was compulsory. Hell there are former Soviet soldier currently fighting Russia. Which way do you want it? Some of you are insufferably ignorant.

One thing I fear about the reports about Ukrainian POWs being on the cargo plane shot down is that if there were no Ukrainians on board, will they now be executed?
Because it's likely names are known and Russia propaganda cannot have those prisoners eventually show up elsewhere.

My guess is that they were already executed, and this is a way to cover that up.

"Banning commercial sales" is hardly the same as shutting down.

Let the free market meet the commercial demand - not my tax money.

I was thinking the same thing. The most Russian thing to happen would be to make 65 Ukrainian POWs “disappear“. However, I saw on a previous post, that the Russian passenger manifest included some names of POWs, that have previously been exchanged. Can’t believe anything from them.

After being told so many times here that the GOP was still controlled by sober thinking, rational people who would not sell Ukraine out. So weird to see the GQP doing what many of said would happen, bending the knee to Orange Jesus. It's all about servicing one ego. One ego is more important than tens of thousands of lives, or the security of Western Europe and the US economy.

Your tax money isn’t being used to meet commercial demand.
Meeting commercial demand actually allows the LC plant to sell to the military at lower cost because they operate at a higher scale.
It’s saving you tax money.

Weird. I see no such headlines anywhere.

They should have no problem getting military contracts at this juncture, should they?

"Saving tax money" a republican euphemism for Socialism these days? The government is competing and taking business away from the private sector.

Republicans hate Socialism unless it is in agriculture or firearms.

If they must continue, they could stick to producing lower powered target rounds for commercial sales, rather than military grade. As noted, plenty of opportunities now to sell massive amounts directly worldwide.

Yes

Russian oligarchs vs. free-market companies.
Why is it so hard to understand that Ukraine has Oligarchs and corruption all on its own? Some of you seem to want to relive US v USSR hockey with higher stakes.

Free market doesn't exist in Ukraine and it's not on Russia.

Serious question. Have U ever been to Ukraine? Better Dead than Red, Right?

Ukraine's biggest enemy is internal corruption. Wouldn't be in this situation without it.

The Chocolate King former President is one of the biggest and is a part of a neo-Nazi group.

What is happening is a mafia war plain and simple. Ukraine's judicial and political system is infested with Ukrainian mafia.

M855A1 rounds aren't being sold to the public from the Lake City plant.

"The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant is the only remaining small-arms ammo factory owned by the government, and is the source of most ammo used by the US military. [Due to the drastic increase in ammo usage with the WoT, Winchester/Olin, the only other company with the loading machines to make mil-spec ammo, has been given a contract for a few million rounds of ammo.]

Lake City, while owned by the government, has always been run by civilian contractors. From 1986-1999, it was operated by Olin (Winchester). The Winchester "white box" "Q-load" ammo (such as Q3131) was Lake City-manufactured ammo stamped with Winchester (WCC) headstamps.

Starting in 2000, the contract to operate Lake City was given to Alliant Techsystems (ATK), who had just bought all the gun-related companies that were formerly owned by Blount. This "shooting sports group" included: Federal, Speer, CCI, RCBS, Weaver, Outers, Ramline, and perhaps one or two others. ATK chose Federal to run Lake City, and thus, the "Federal XMxxx" loads were born.

The US military has extremely tough and strict requirements for ammo, and many layers of Quality Control (QC) checks to ensure that contract ammo is up to spec. Obviously, as with any mass-produced item, some of the product is going to fail QC.

LC-produced ammo that passes all the QC checks is packaged up and sent out to fulfill military contracts. I call this "Grade 1" ammo, which means "the best." Note that ammo that is delivered to the military can no longer be surplussed as whole ammo, due to an Executive Order by Clinton in 1997, so as a rule, this ammo will never be available on the commercial market.
