This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

The Russian Khmeimim airbase in Latakia, Syria, is still completely packed with planes, missiles, fuel trucks etc. You can be sure that the new Syrian army has pointed many barrels, missiles and drones at this location. Obviously, there are negotiations ongoing in the background. The only question is how they will end. There are only three possible outcomes:

1.) The talks fall apart and rebels start shelling the base, obliterating Russian hardware worth billions of dollars.

2.) The talks end by allowing Russians to leave the base in peace, but certainly something has to be given in exchange for. This is going to be very expensive. At least the value of the equipment currently stored at the base.

3.) Russians are allowed to stay under certain conditions, but have to pay far more than in option 2.

No matter how it will end, Russia has been reduced from the one faction calling the shots in Syria, down to being the beggar. None of this outcomes is good for Russia. In fact, what we see here is probably the biggest hostage situation in the world
Yep, Putie has problems on all fronts now, which problem can he he fix fast.

He remains a master strategist. Reading the news in Syria how they could not negotiate to stay and are leaving, the loss of those two bases are massive. By far greater than any other two anywhere else not in Russia.

Their presence there and the lock down of Syria was economically and militarily far far far more important than adding Ukraine including Crimea (which he already had).

Due to his incredible miscalculation in Ukraine they lost it all. Let’s keep the recently quiet and subdued natty light in our prayers.

"Northern Syria — Russian troops have taken command of a U.S. airbase in northern Syria — and without firing a shot. Russian state media showed commandos staging what looked like a military invasion.

Choppers descending onto the dusty runway, troops taking up combat positions. The Russians are playing up the takeover of the Kobani airfield as a victory.

The former U.S. airbase that served as the main logistical hub for America's fight against ISIS, now with the Russian flag flying above it."

"Norway announced Monday $242 million in new military aid for Ukraine, including help securing access to the country’s vital Black Sea ports.

“It is essential to protect the Ukrainian population and Ukrainian infrastructure from attacks by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in a statement. “It is also important to protect exports by sea of grain and other products, which generate crucial revenues for Ukraine.”

The aid includes funding for training Ukrainian soldiers as well as mine clearance operations.
Norway’s Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram said mines are a “significant threat” in the Black Sea and that the aid will help Ukrainian forces detect and defuse mines near the coast."
