This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

I assume it was a joke referring to the good morning viet nam clip about police actions vs war.
If it was other posters I would agree. But that asshole has been a Putin apologist for years. His posting style suggests Russian troll - albeit a more refined troll than Nat.

It’s pretty clear that the internal propaganda is going to have to ramp up to keep Putin in power / alive. The sanctions are starting to impact the average Russian. The elites will be fine, so to keep the masses pacified they will need to be distracted. We will see how long bogus anti Nazi and the West is picking on us rhetoric outweighs empty bank accounts and stomachs.
Was thinking about same thing. I think Putin has a real bad problem due to two things:

1) Russia has been westernized over last 30 years and like their western stuff

B) It’s not 1983 - the ability for population to get information by the internet and spread through phones is going to be a challenge. I am sure we have plans to get the story out.

So as he tells everyone that everything is fine, we are on the right side, they are watching the whole world shut their doors to them and slowly getting info spreading he is full of shit. They have to know by now he is not being truthful as the economy tumbles and all non Russian products and stores get turned off.

I guess I never really noticed him over the years, or even in this thread, although I tend to gloss over non-substantive posts in this thread. I guess I am not sure as to whether that makes him a good troll or a bad one…

There is an effort to encourage people to go to Google maps, find restaurants in Russia and other businesses and post war news to business reviews.

While I agree with these points one concern I have is that a lot of the people that don't buy into the propaganda are fleeing Russia.

Foreign fighters are now in Ukraine.

"Pentagon spokesman John Kirby urged Americans to stay home.

“I don’t have an estimate of Americans who might want to be volunteering to go there,” he said. “I would say what I said last week, if you’re an American and you want to do right by Ukraine, the best thing you can do is find a way to donate to so many agencies that are trying to deal with what is now clearly a humanitarian crisis in the region, and certainly there in Ukraine. We still do not believe that Ukraine is a safe place for Americans to go. We urge them not to go and if any are still there, we urge them to leave.”

Hope this is just plausible deniability of the volunteers' actions and not the US being faint hearted.

I think more just wanting to avoid a bunch of cosplay gravy seals types to go over there just to die quickly. They need real ex soldiers, not hero wannabes.

Is Putin Europe's worst leader or what???

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how this insane war benefits Russia.

Some facts after 3 weeks of war:

1.) The Russian economy is imploding.

2.) Thousands of Russian soldiers are getting maimed and killed.

3.) Russian is turning into a world pariah.

I just don't see the point of this Ukranian endeavor.

Can someone explain to me how this benefits Russia?

TIA.
Heard a story this am on NPR...I'll look for the link...about how the Civil War was fought economically as well as militarily. The connection between Russia and the Confederacy was interesting and boiled down to how they viewed the importance of their resources. Senator James Hammond from SC spoke on the floor of the US Senate on March 4, 1858:

“Without firing a gun, without drawing a sword, should they make war on us we could bring the whole world to our feet […] What would happen if no cotton was furnished for three years? I will not stop to depict what everyone can imagine, but this is certain: England would topple headlong and carry the whole civilized world with her, save the South. No, you dare not make war on cotton. No power on earth dares to make war upon it. Cotton is king.”

The South produced 3/4 of the world's cotton and textiles WERE the driver of the Industrial Revolution at the time. Putin thought his oil and gas gave him the same leverage. He thought he could annex Ukraine with little opposition (wrong on that count as well) and that the rest of the world - particularly Europe - would stand by and do nothng. Even if the US imposed sanctions, they would have little effect with no European buy-in.

Both Putin and Hammond f'ed up.

Found it: In Roger Lowenstein's new book Ways and Means, he investigates the financial forces that kept the Union and Confederate fighting forces funded during the Civil War.

I promised @SSG T that I wouldn’t post any more grizzly imagery in this thread, but there’s video out there of Ukrainians coming upon this car after it was attacked. The driver and passenger (obviously dead) appear to be a married couple in their 80’s, and a handicapped parking tag hangs from the rear view mirror. This was totally unprovoked, the people inside posed zero threat, and it’s 100% a war crime.

“We didn’t know why we were here” my ass.

Man, that’s sad. I wondered why they didn’t turn around quickly. Makes sense that a couple in their 80s would just stop thinking nobody could possibly consider them a threat. And not having the quickest reflexes.

They were shot well before you could see the tanks; literally just after the vehicle came to a stop

Not really any time for an 80 yr old to make the assessment...

Simple: Putin lives in a bubble of yes men and women and never thought items 1 through 3 would happen. In which case he easily expands his empire and grabs their natural resources and agricultural wealth. He grossly miscalculated the cost and ability of west to reunite. He thought NATO and US were weak.he thought his army was well equipped and fierce. He thought Ukraine had nothing and would lay down.
Putin must be too dumb to understand the resolve of the American people to band together against a common enemy when we have one. Sure it isn't 100%, but getting 2/3 or 3/4 of this country to agree on something, like the sanctions against Russia, is pretty amazing.

History will look back at this as yet another case of the world not doing anything despite all the evidence.
Commander of the 33rd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Guards. He dead.
Feels like in addition to supply lines they are snipping / droning the commanders whipping the conscripts to kill people many of them don’t want to fight. It’s a strategy that could lead to mass surrenders in the days to come.
