This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

If we get through this, we will have to address the Russia nukes. It is a big problem. Hopefully there will be a de-escalation of nukes world wide. The principal of MAD breaks down once you have paper tigers with unstable leaders threatening the world with nuclear holocaust as their way to conquest. Took us almost 80 years to get here, but finally we have that person using them as aggression.

Quit being scared of nukes everyone.

Putin is going to lose at some point.
Agreed, why risk making a bunch of innocent people in other countries ‘losers’ too?
You’re trusting that Putin won’t miscalculate and escalate more.
If NATO intervenes and he nukes the second largest city in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland? Do we just kill hundreds thousands more in response and hope it doesn’t go into the millions?
‘Meh, we meant well?’
We are 100 fold more powerful than Russia.
Conventional military, fo sho.
But the nuke calculation is different.

Hey.....

Lets all agree to disagree tonight. Minds can be changed, but not over a minute or two. I'm not saying I'm right or your wrong. We have established valued points on both sides.

But most importantly....we have gotten this thread closer to 300 pages. :)

And that is the conundrum. If we stop in fear of the mere verbal threat of using nukes then all you do is embolden people to want nukes. What de-escalation is possible when Putin et al realize there is no check on their ambition? And why on earth would they ever give up their nukes?

This. So, if Mexico develops nukes. We should just bow down to them because of said "threat"?

Nope.

False equivalency. For that to be a fair comparison, in your hypothetical, Mexico would have to be a communist de facto dictatorship, and have a century worth of data of being imperialistic assholes to their neighbors, and then invade Central America. I'm also being lenient and saying we sort of share a border with Russia via Alaska... but in regards to the continental United States.... there's a big difference there.

You are harping on people's intelligence, but that is a stupid comparison.

Whats the status of our anti-missile defense…. I’m talking about the one where we can shoot an incoming missile out of the sky?. Was that just bs or could we shoot a nuke down well off American soil?

We have to have something that would make the Iron Dome look like a kids toy right?

It certainly looks like the Russian strategy is to put massive political pressure on Zelensky to surrender to stop civilian massacres.

Intentional bombing in residential areas has no other purpose.
Sacking the cities of your enemy is a rather time honored tradition in the victorious waging of war.
Ask Haluga Khan, Sherman, or LeMay.

“You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it
-General Sherman, in his letter to Atlanta.

We can shoot them down. Not perfect. But we can. And, again, I'm not looking to provoke that. I just don't see it happening. Not..at..all. People need to quit stressing about it. Do you think I want my family and friends to die? Hell no. I just don't see it happening. I expect a lot of "you were right" in a few years.

Not as stupid as just assuming Putin is going to blow up the world.

We sent the Arleigh Burke class ships into the Baltic because they are a platform for our ABM defenses.
But you can’t expect them to be perfect, and they have finite ammo loaded.

No, we’re actually looking to buy Iron Dome (which we invested in researching).

That's cause you got kids right? I got through what Disney+ had for me in ~3 pandemic weeks of streaming.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm still paying for it and I forgot it has The Simpsons
Yes, I pay yearly for the same 10 episodes of Mickey Mouse Club, Spidey, and the three Disney movies appropriate for a four year old.

Why is it stupid to consider he can make this conflict exponentially deadlier, yet short of blowing up the world.

What if he thinks, ‘Russians sucked up 20 million casualties in WW2, the Americans didn’t even lose half a million. Let’s see how much they want to fight for a border not on their border, but on the other side of the world’.

I didn’t expect him to invade in no small part because I saw it as a losing proposition.
What if he’s bad at ‘this’?

Look, telling people to go read a book while not paying enough attention to be grammatically correct is dismissive, condescending, and annoying. Then you present a wild scenario where Mexico has nuclear weapons as a comparison to what is going on with Russia and Ukraine. It's a dumb comparison.

You're also making definitive statements like, "They'll never use nukes, let's just send in the Air Force to smash their forces in Ukraine... they won't react with nuclear weapons if we do that."

Dude, you may be right... but you aren't privy to the amount of intelligence that the decision makers are. That is such a bold statement for someone who doesn't know any more than I do. But you read, "To kill a Mockingbird" so congratulations, you're more qualified. I read that book my Freshman year of high school too, like every other kid who went through High School English.

Then let's examine the concept of, "those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it" I get that as a concept but history has zero precedent for the internet and the global economy we currently exist in. Hell...... we can't even claim that precedent what.... 15 years ago? My phone is incredibly more powerful then the highest end PC that existed in 2003.

The world is economically sending Russia back into the Stone Age, and this is a society that, unlike NK, has experienced modern society and all it's frills. We don't need to give Putin a reason to justify his bullshit, this needs to spark something within Russians that their leader is a goddamn madman.

Ultimately, I think one of my biggest concerns right now, outside of pushing that lunatic into tossing nukes around, is that Russia razes Ukraine, pulls out.. says, "My B" and then faces no repercussions.

They should be cut off from the rest of the world until they rebuild what they destroyed.

This whole thing is just ****ing sad and senseless... but I am not going to back emotional decisions that put... literally millions if not billions at risk. It's not like we're sitting on our hands right now and doing nothing. Dude is feeling the heat.

One more dumb post as I've probably posted one tonight. Americans didn't shoot its own soldiers for retreating.

The arc of being right and wrong is not hard to see on this one.

We can probably shoot some ICBMS down. But not 4,000, and not short to medium range missiles from subs parked off our coast.
