Very different thing. That's an individual President who basically made an empty threat not based on treaties or history.
If Putin would dare attack a NATO country he'd be crossing a red line that's never been crossed since WW2 and is enshrined in treaty and historical obligations.
This really couldn’t have played out better for the United States.

Putin’s arrogance, viciousness, and racism really cost him & his country dearly.
These things were always there, they just became starkly real for everyone when the brutality of his methods were live streamed.
In Syria, his atrocities were against the “other” whereas in Ukraine they are “like us.” Ukrainians blatantly espouse to seek and uphold western values. So the West united around them.
I’m not saying it was right or fair, simply what I believe why we are where we are in this latest outrage and Putin’s laundry list of Crimes against Humanity grows longer by the day.
Yep. Impressive article and I was a bit wondering the same (if any one recalls my China watching his fat older brother fight at the bar analogy). It really seems China has been also caught off guard about how weak Russia is and how dumb a move Putin has made. And how quick and brutal the economic war came. The thing is, the biggest pro for a global economy is being able to absolutely wreck a bad player.

There is pain and perceived pain. New generation of Russians used to having nice things. What people in the 80s thought was okay could be deemed intolerable today. We will see.
Most of the citizens don’t remember those days and they have been westernized. The folks in the 80s had never had it good. It had been a brutal 80 years until the USSR collapsed. The current populace is going to freak as things degrade.
