This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

On a different subject...

Russia has been exposed...while they've made technology advances with their top end stuff, which is pretty good....their command and control/tactics, logistics and the training of their forces suck.

To take advantage of the better equipment you have to be on point with the last 4 items...they aren't.

Makes me wonder about the Chinese....they've also made great advances in tech. How are they in those 4 area's? We really have no data points to judge on that front.

Folks have speculated that sooner or later the Chinese will make a move on Taiwan. We do know that the Taiwanese military is very "westernized" and highly trained. This whole Ukraine debacle may give China pause...

I know our spending on military technology and equipment is controversial and I totally get that. One thing that should never be controversial is the amount of money we invest in our armed forces from a force training or force readiness perspective. The amount of advanced training, drills, exercises, multinational exercises, etc….I think gives us and our Allie’s a huge advantage on the battlefield. It is pretty apparent that while Russia has some good weapons, they are terrible at employing them and that goes back to training. I wonder how much money that was intended for training had been turned into yachts and vacation homes.

Agree....we've seen this before.

Before Gulf War 1 there were estimates of 10K US casualties because Iraq's military was relatively "modern". They had relatively large and well stocked Air Force...MIG-29's and Mirage F-1's. Decent Air Defence systems etc....

We basically obliterated their Air Force in the first couple days....

Their troops were mostly ill trained conscripts....

Anyway...it turned into a cake walk.

A well trained/motivated force is essential...

This makes perfect sense when we see video of some of the tank attacks and how close it seems the Ukrainians appear to be. Doesn't look like there's anything preventing closer contact.

Thanks for the explanation.
I read up a little on this. There was a guy from US armed forces explaining this and his point was without training your natural instinct is to stay in your vehicles. You perceive them as protecting you. But tanks and vehicles need screening and you need lots of training to be able to stick your head out, and coordinate movement to be effective.
Many of the Russians are apparently one year conscripts. You aren't going to be very good at this type of thing in that limited amount of time and many are probably unmotivated were just biding time until they were discharged. I think the Russians ahave realized that have to screen but since they aren't trained they don't know how to do it.

Well of course.

David Patreus was talking about this on CNN last night. He was being pushed about Russia being able to realign its strategy and bring in more men and equipment and he said “Yeah, but this is the Army they’re stuck with. It doesn’t matter how good the equipment it is or how many men there are, if they aren’t well-trained, they cannot perform.”

"Jurek Owsiak broke the system! In cooperation with @ krzaskowski_, he built a huge professional hall for Ukrainians escaping the war! There are beds, armchairs, tables, play areas for children, a kitchen, toilets, showers .. Perfect organization in 6 days !!"
Yeah, just going by the picture you’d assume he promised to put every girl in Ukraine in his music video.
