This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

It seems that you have it ass backwards. It's the Russians who are attempting to build bases on their enemies borders, wouldn't it?
Their geopolitical strategic aim of the last 80 years has been a buffer between them and the source of invasions for the last 220 years.

That is indeed their stated logic. However it is both deeply flawed and not the true root issue.

Deeply flawed because this was the worst path to ensuring Russian territorial integrity. They invited a war with the western world by attacking core western values of sovereignty and democracy in a WWII style war broadcast on twitter. Dumb dumb dumb.

Not the true root issue because at the heart of this is an aggrieved autocrat trying to protect a kleptocratic system that cannot compete with the open markets of western democracies. Putin wanted a way to pacify his political base and an “easy” victory in Ukraine was his path. More dumb dumb dumb.

F*ck little prick Putin.

Actually not uncommon even before the invasion.
I think the current situation makes it more important...

Repeated attempts by the United States’ top defense and military leaders to speak with their Russian counterparts have been rejected by Moscow for the last month, leaving the world’s two largest nuclear powers in the dark about explanations for military movements and raising fears of a major miscalculation or battlefield accident.
