This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

They get a lot of food from the West, not Ukraine. What could leverage them is the fact that they’ve tried to be the best buddy of so many countries around the world in order to buy votes in the UN. Will Xi risk the backlash if he lets people suffer in those countries?

Much like oil, food is a global commodity. What doesn't get to market from Ukraine causes a supply shortage and thus, higher prices.

Not good for anyone, anywhere.

No; it's the formula for Lather.Rinse.Repeat once another Putin takes the reins.
The next guy could easily be worse than Putin. Many that lose their jobs, etc due to sanctions are going to blame someone and a lot of them are going to blame the foreign countries imposing the sanctions. Not to mention the soldiers, kids mostly, coming home in body bags. Sounds like a recipe for a hardline nationalist.

Lol. Putin already did that for 22 years and things are spiraling down the toilet. They already are hardline nationalists with Z bands and flags. Doubt they end up with someone worse than Putin. He will go down in infamy for what he did to his country. Think where they could be if he had not taken over in late 90s.

I can’t remember just who the cat is that pootin supposedly turned over the keys to during his recent surgery.
He looked like more of the same or worse.
Hopefully he visits the front lines soon.

What I have been reading is Russia has lost about 1/3 of its operational army. Not what is in Ukraine but overall. And it gets worse when you factor a lot of it was some of there best operational equipment and better “trained” battalions. Oh and they are running out of missiles too. Basically another 2-3 weeks of this and half the Russian army will be gone. And the entire military will be broken at that point and unable to rebuild, let alone build to what they should have been with tech from this millennium. The great and fearsome Russian army lost to a non NATO county in a war front about the size of eastern 1/3 of Texas in a span of 2.5 months. It is one of the most stunning defeats of a superior power by an underdog in world history, both modern and ancient.

No to mention the 100s of war crimes that should wipe out a ton of others. These mother effers need to be scrubbed from human society.

He is worse.

He was Putin's senior officer in the old KGB. And still a confidante/right hand man.

But perhaps he won't feel this war is necessary.

I really feel like Putin did this to cement his legacy as a great leader and was in a hurry to do it because he's dying. This was supposed to be his greatest moment on the way out.

Unfortunately for Putin, it doesn't look like there will be a statue of him in Kiev.

A US General said on CNN. Russia's entire History is about expansion and contraction. Not sure how you cure that mind set.
It is in the genes.
This little walkabout is gonna have consequences for the next generation (or more), no matter what the Russians hope for.

Maybe an even bigger consequence is the obvious reveal that relying on bad actors for energy and other resources has national security consequences. Please, please, please may this serve as an incentive for a renewables push along with dramatic moves towards efficiency in usage.
(Western US water usage, we are looking at you.)

In a week or two, what does this look like for Russia beyond heads rolling for war crimes and Russian oil paying to rebuild Ukraine?

Does it get split up? Does it get partitioned between the US, EU, Ukraine, and China?

But that would mean less profits for the gas and oil industries. What, are you a communist or something?
