This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

I'm serious, do you think the protesters have the same protections they do in the west? They'll disappear under Putin and come back malnourished if they're lucky
Small scale, yes, but not if too large to handle (see French Revolution, Bolshevik Revolution, American Revolution, etc.). And do you think the Russian police want to kill their own people? And with social media, not only would the world see Putin murdering his own people, but so would the Russian people. Not a good look

I’m not saying there is a Revolution there, but large scale protests would present significant problems

Soccer mad country, kissing the World Cup goodbye. Yes, in the grand scope of things it’s a small thing, but the more swiftly they become a pariah, the quicker the Russian people revolt against this:
Wars have been fought over soccer.

The more the world in its entirety -- economic, political, sporting, entertainment, etc. - make the Russian government a pariah, the better.

And do you think the Russian police want to kill their own people?
It's not like there isn't past precedence.

Stalin had nearly a million of his own citizens executed, beginning in the 1930s. Millions more fell victim to forced labor, deportation, famine, massacres, and detention and interrogation by Stalin’s henchmen.

“In some cases, a quota was established for the number to be executed, the number to be arrested,” said Naimark. “Some officials overfulfilled as a way of showing their exuberance.”

I think Russian protest/unrest matter.

But the thing I keep coming back to...how do you get to Putin? He's former KGB, he's legendarily paranoid, he's got all the money in the world, he's been preparing for this for years, he's purged every possible threat.

He's virtually insulated from all consequences.

Eventually, someone will have to put one in the back of his head, but I'm not sure how all the uprising in Russia can get to him.

I suppose at some point military command can stop executing his orders, but I imagine Putin has them all thoroughly compromised, and to do so would result in the immediate liquidation of their families.

I wonder, if it goes on long enough, that you just have mass surrender of the Russian troops in the field. If you've got 60k boots on the ground, that's too many to summarily execute.

If playing Risk has taught me anything, it's that invading and holding Ukraine is fraught with peril!

That is a tough hold, after being a tough take.
Ukraine and Mideast are the Asia/Europe linchpins.
I always start Risk by taking Australia if possible. Two solid points per round and safety in solitude.

What’s amazing to me is he made it so high within our military ranks with that mindset and for so long.
Seriously. It's terrifying that man was the National Security Advisor at one point. And let's not forget, the reason he resigned from that position was because he gave inaccurate statements regarding a conversation he had with a Russian Ambassador.

He threatened he could take Kiev in 'two weeks' back in 2014.

Remember this?

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The U.S. war plan has "failed," veteran war correspondent Peter Arnett told Iraqi TV in an interview that aired Sunday.
"The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan," Arnett said. "Clearly, the American war planners misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces."

Right, and by all accounts they’ve been working hard at upgrading their military since he took Crimea from them.

Not sure what the Iraq article is about.

I’m not questioning whether Russia would win this war in the long run. It’s whether Ukraine has done enough to be able hold off Russia long enough.

I mean....it's not like they caused the Soviet Union any problems...

Why on earth would Russian forces want anything to do with Chernobyl, other than to release radiation upon the Ukrainian population?
Putin was upset at the HBO miniseries Chernobyl so I'm sure he's sending troops there to set the record straight. You know, how the Chernobyl explosion was actually the result of the CIA and it's America's fault.

Looks like we might get a shot at season two of Chernobyl.

Peter Arnett doing Peter Arnett things. The point was unrealistic expectations about the pace of operations led to a faulty conclusion the 'war plan failed'.

I'm putting the 1st tweet for perspective. GEN Abrams is an actual GEN (Flynn is a LTG, it's not appropriate for him to call himself GEN and he knows it) and the former FORSCOM and US Forces Korea (USFK) commander.

Flynn is compromised by the Ruskies. Throw him in Leavenworth and interrogate him.
