This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Damn I was hoping they got the 30+ said to be on base 4 hours earlier…
In one of the pictures posted you can see planes tucked in behind berms. I’ve gotten pretty good at looking at Soviet era airbases and they all feature big tarmacs and berms. A couple in Ukraine feature hangers in wooded areas that appear to be covered in vegetation. If they struck with only a few missiles they could have had the massive blasts we saw, and left equipment half a mile away unscathed behind their berms.

I can be slow but just realized one reason Russia is pushing the accident excuse for the airbase, is that all those Russian civilians rushing to return will be telling friends and relatives about the devastating attack. Their propaganda has been telling them that Russia is totally in control. It would be shocking to see what happened anyway but this could add another layer to that to realize the situation is very much different than they believed.
Yesterday was huge for a number of reasons, and having that many Russian eye witnesses to such destruction, including the family of Russian soldiers, is among them.

Totally. I could see it be the moment that finally leads to Putin’s downfall. In fact, I will make the bold prediction that Putin will be dead or deposed by November 1. They can’t hide much longer how bad the war is going for them and they can’t hide the economy for entire country is grinding to halt and they know they started it.

Kind of like our Tet Offensive in Viet Nam. We actually won that battle though. However, the optics were such to turn public opinion.

I am not sure this is true anymore, given yesterday. It would be nice if Ukraine had its own such capability. But, if it did have it and didn't obtain it, why wait 5 months to use it?
I think that is a good question. Maybe it took them that long to get it operational. And did the West give them some sort of technology to allow those missiles to make it there without being shot down. Or maybe the Russians don't have enough anti missile defenses to protect everything...tee hee hee.

The other known good news from yesterday. This is further East and part of the ongoing attempt to isolate the Russians near Kherson.

"Latest message #Ukraine : Detonations in the vicinity of the eastern bridge connection #Krim -- > #Kherson at #Chongar . Details not yet known. The Russian Army's supply routes are under severe pressure."

Today Ukrainian Forces hit near the settlement of Chongar in Kherson that borders Crimea
🔥
A possible target was the bridge that is one of two crossings connecting Crimea to the rest of Ukraine The launch occurred at least 160km from the frontline

God I hope you’re right.
DOD estimates have Russian dead at 70,000 to 80,000 since the invasion started. 🤨🤯

I wish. I think they have estimated around 30K - 40K dead, with another 30K to 40K injured or otherwise sidelined.*

*edited to note that it is estimated they have 70K to 80K in casualties, which include dead and wounded.

But it works to some extent in Russia because unless you are computer literate, the lies are all you hear.
I'd say not just literate, but willing and able to break through the state-controlled filters that prevent you from getting western news. The equivalent of your average American mom who just sees the headlines on CNN and uses Google searches wouldn't be doing enough to get real info.

Staggering numbers for any war. But for 4.5 months. Just insane.

Once winter comes Russia will be playing the natural gas card,... This needs to come to a head here real soon.
Hopefully Russian-dependent countries will have become more energy source nimble by then, but you could very well be correct.

They are trying but I doubt they will be able to totally protect themselves,.. It might be a very bad Winter.

Quite the milestone here --- the 100th senior Russian commander killed! I hope his family gets a nice wreath or something.

Russia has now lost at least 100 senior officers since it invaded Ukraine earlier this year, according to some tallies. It’s a devastating milestone for Moscow—and just the latest indication that Vladimir Putin’s war effort in Ukraine is wavering.

In the past two days alone, three senior Russian officers were reported dead: Lt. Colonel Nikolay Gorban, a commander from the Foreign Security Service (FSB) special forces; army aviation commander Colonel Vasily Kleshchenko; and
Colonel Vitaly Tsikul of Russia's 90th Tank Division—reportedly the 100th Russian senior officer to die in the war.

Our spy satellites are way better than they realized.

Did everyone see that a Russian satellite that just went up, is in practically the same orbit as one of ours. Our military is concerned about what it might do though it is possible it is only trying to get details on our version. (They have killer satellites but using one would be a major escalation.)
