Videos went viral on social media as users speculated that the explosions might be caused by long-range weapons, because it would be difficult for Ukraine to attack such a faraway target with short-range artillery.


Several military experts agreed in interviews. They said Ukraine was most likely using either drones or MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile Systems, also known as ATACMS, produced by the U.S. defense giant Lockheed Martin, which have a range of 190 miles.

“The explosions in Crimea were huge. They destroyed nine Sukhoi Su-24 and Sukhoi Su-33 Soviet aircraft and threw a steel beam through a car some way away,” said Crump, who is also the CEO of the geopolitical risk and intelligence consultancy firm Sibylline.

“Ukraine is still being coy on the cause, but clearly something is up,” he added, referring to the possibility that the West has sent more weapons systems to the country than it has officially announced."

The suite of Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) are 24/7, all-weather, surface-to-surface, inertially guided missiles used to engage targets in the corps/Army area of influence. ATACMS were used extensively in both Operation Desert Storm (1991) and in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003) ground wars for shaping operations by the joint force, Joint Special Operations Forces and Army Land Component Command operational levels. There is one missile per launching assembly (missile pod) with two missiles per launcher load in the M270/ M270A1 Multiple-Launch Rocket System and one missile in the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System launcher.


Targets include air defense artillery sites, surface-to-surface missile units, logistics sites, command and control complexes and helicopter forward operating bases.

BENEFIT TO THE SOLDIER​

ATACMS provides the warfighter the ability to engage both point and area high value targets with precision fires out to 300 km.

There are photos with what look like ballistic missile craters. The fact they hit open ammo storage parked at the aircraft magnified their effect, but contribute to the confused sourcing. Did drones trigger the secondaries that took out the planes?

I lean towards the conclusion they’ve built some Hrim2 and/or we’ve given them better capabilities with the license to use it in pre-2014 territory.
