This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

The Baltics block off Kaliningrad from Russia.

Ukraine is no different; if Russia wants access to a seaport in Crimea, it can LEASE the port, just like the US does with its naval bases and army bases around the world.
Seriously? Nato would never lease Crimea to Russia.. and Ukraine is nothing like the Baltics to Russia. Sure you can find superficial comparisons. I doubt Ukraine really tries to take Crimea anyway. We'll see, I might be way off on that one. Crimea certainly doesn't want that. It might be a ploy to set-up negotions (hopefully). It’s very reckless to allow it. I think it’s a coin toss nukes or some other escalation is in play in the case of Crimea..

NATO doesnt own Crimea, so no, they would never lease it because they couldnt.

NATO would have no say; it would be a Ukraine decision.

NATO could eject Ukraine out of the organization over such a decision by Ukraine if they wanted to.
If it got to that point then funding to Ukraine would be in question. It's really a big question if half the country wants to be in one sphere of influence and the other doesn't.

That's not surprising . The Baltics and Poland have pretty much always hated Russians and so has western Ukraine to some degree. Crimea is pretty Russian and so is eastern Ukraine to a lesser degree.

Here's a point I haven't seen made. I believe part of the problem is there's been a trend towards ethnic nationalism or ethnic revival in all of the former soviet union countries over the past 15 years or so and also attempts in some countries to sort of weed out Russian language and culture. It takes different forms in different countries. It's deep rooted, not really related to the current conflicts. It can range from just ethnic pride to discimination and racism. In some countries it's only cultural and soft and others the government encourages it. This is a real problem for residnets in eastern Ukraine and Crimea.. and there are no other regions like those.

Russia spent the last 250 years ethnically cleansing the local Crimean Tartars so they could have a naval port and steal their land. I don’t really care what Russia thinks they want or are owed there. Russia exchanged Crimea in a deal if Ukraine gave up their nukes. Russians need to leave Crimea and honor the agreement they made with Ukraine. They have been infringing on that agreement since 2014. Ukraine has every right to bomb the Russians squatting on Crimea to high heaven.

Kind of a cool story

This isn't really related to what I wrote but ok. I don't believe it was ethnic cleansing, more like what happened to the Native Americans. I'll just say Crimea has predomiantely consisted of Russians since at least the early 1900's and Russian territory since 1783 and before that the Ottoman Empire controlled Crimea.

It’s important to stay in step, and not get ahead of oneself, but what comes next must be explored and planned for. How does Ukraine rebuild? I doubt any reparations will come from Russia, so how does Ukraine reach out to investors? With an industrial base and lots of tech savvy young people it seems like good place to invest in.

It will take a reverse-diaspora, whatever that is called. I do think down the road there is a big potential for tourism. I know more about Ukraine than any other European country now, which is kind of nuts. I think lots of people will feel "ownership" in Ukraine's future, as saving it has been a joint venture of billions of people, of course, backed by the full faith and credit of Ukrainian lives and blood.

As far as private investors go….depends if they have their corruption problems under control.

"Neutral Switzerland requires countries that buy Swiss arms to seek permission to re-export them. According to Swiss law, exports of war material must be refused if the country of destination is involved in an international armed conflict.

In April Switzerland vetoed the re-export of 12,400 rounds of Swiss-made ammunition used in 30 Gepard anti-aircraft tanks that Germany sent to Ukraine. In summer it also rejected Denmark's bid to provide 22 Swiss-made Piranha III infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine.

Swiss government spokesperson André Simonazzi told the paper that the minister’s letter would be answered "promptly" by the Swiss federal department responsible for arms exports."

Bull. ****ing. Shit.
How does anyone negotiate with someone who’s word means nothing?

And yet, some here want Ukraine to negotiate another “agreement “ with Putin. But I’m sure he’ll abide by the next one. If you can’t trust Putty who can you trust.

Sounds like they really intend to ‘Stalingrad’ the city.

It will result in the destruction of the city, but they can’t win it. Ukraine isn’t at the bitter end of a ridiculously stretched logistics chain.
If 6th Army could drop precision artillery there’d be no stories about the tractor factory, beyond it being a graveyard.
